Hits Me, Baby (One More Time)

MTV News made some intriguing statements about THE BEST OF 1991-2000 yesterday:

  1. It will contain tracks from ALL THAT YOU CAN’T LEAVE BEHIND
  2. It will contain “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me,” “Miss Sarajevo” (!), and “Everlasting Love” (!!!) from the FORCES OF NATURE soundtrack. We’d like to point out that this was recorded as a b-side in 1990 and should be ineligible, but that would be quibbling.
  3. According to an Interscope spokesperson, it may not be a two-disc set after all, since the band “didn’t amass as much material” in this period.

The plot thickens considerably. (Updated 3:48 PM ET — read on)

By the way, we’re not so sure we appreciate MTV News-jockey Iann Robinson’s snarky comment during the on-air piece:

…the album will contain all the great material recorded between 1991’s ACHTUNG BABY and 2000’s ALL THAT YOU CAN’T LEAVE BEHIND… must be an EP, then.

(Thanks to youtwo.net for providing a “hard” copy)

We’d also like to mention (since people are buzzing) that while this print report is more speculative, the on-air report does not use the qualifier “may” in reference to the three tracks mentioned. So is MTV News counting unhatched chickens, or do they know something we don’t? Only time — or extensive bribing of interns — can tell.

  1. Yes, it was, and presumably, yes, this is the same version, as the one that was on the FORCES OF NATURE soundtrack is identical to the original b-side (from “All I Want Is You” for trivia buffs).

  3. The article states: “The new hits LP may also contain” those tracks. May. May. Not definite.

  5. Everlasting Love was once released as a A-side in the Netherlands, a few weeks after the release of AIWIY. Think it had more airplay than the ‘real’ single.

  7. I think MTV news is going off half-cocked. Their “source” at Interscope is probably a “round-up” of rumors circulating the music industry.

  9. weird that miss sarajevo is in it, consideri ng it’s by “another band” supposedly. Good thing it has HMTMKMKM, taht song rocks balls, as shown on the greatest tour on earth, POPMART. weird about everlasting love, although it’s been used in other movies too i think. ANd screw the idea of it beang a single LP, cos their 1990-2000 material is THEIR BEST EVER. of course, it should have a lot of *POP* but that should be a given…

  11. ummmm, wasn’t Everlasting Love included with the b-sides of the best of 1980-1990? Methinks this mtv report is for the birds.

  13. Tracks on just one BEST OF CD would probably give preference to actual releases and their success:
    1. One
    2. Mysterious Ways
    3. Numb
    4. Lemon
    5. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
    6. Miss Sarejevo
    7. Discotheque
    8. If God Will Send His Angels
    9. Staring At The Sun
    10. Please
    11. Beautiful Day
    12. Elevation
    13. Walk On
    14. Stuck In A Moment
    15. NEW TUNE

That’s 4 from each major effort plus a new release and the “Hold Me/Miss” combo. What in this list wouldn’t make it and what would bump it out of the lineup?

  15. If this release is only one CD, I hope they give bigger pause to certain songs going on that aren’t necessarily “hits.” Numb? Yes, it was single…but, hmmph. They’ve done better. They should be mindful as they were with the first release to contain songs – album cuts – that best represent who they are as a band and who they are to their fans.

  17. Besides the new songs on Best Of, they aren’t really geared towards hard core fans like us. People buy best of albums because they want a collection of an artists hits and aren’t willing to buy each album individually, and seeing as people have probably seen Everlasting Love in the movies and went “hey I like that song what is it?” It might be a reason it made the album.

  19. Just to inform all of you…atu2.com has an article from Worldpop about this very subject. In it, they actually give a list of tracks “expected to be on the album”:

    The Fly
    Mysterious Ways
    One
Even Better Than The Real Thing
Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
    Lemon
    Stay
    Discotheque

    Please
If God Will Send His Angels
    Mofo
    Sweetest Thing
    Beautiful Day
    Stuck In A Moment
    Elevation
    Walk On

I have no idea where they received this info, but they also bring out the same points that the MTV news article did. Is this just wild speculation?

  21. “Sweetest Thing”?? What — they’re gonna do ANOTHER version of that song which still isn’t as good as the original? Plus, it was on the Best Of ’80-’90, just as was “Everlasting Love”. I know during this second decade U2 was not as profilic with b-sides as during the ’80s, but to have songs carry over to two “Best Of” CDs doesn’t make sense.

I agree with GJR that “Numb” shouldn’t make the cut. Heck, if “I Will Follow” wasn’t “suitable” for the first “Best Of”, how could “Numb” make it on the second? I think a song like “Daddy’s Gonna Pay …” or even “The Wanderer” fit the bill as good selections from “Zooropa” than does “Numb”.

  23. The cheap rumours. The senseless speculation. The sheer mass hysteria. Hmm, U2 must be in the studio again.

As much as anyone, I’m trying to get that fanciful mental picture of that silver cover for the new U2 hits package.

First of all, Night & Day from the Cole Porter tribute in ’90 is a dead on candidate for the hits package, since it was a big hit for U2.

As for B-sides, of course there’s going to be a second disc. U2 have generated many fine b-sides (sattelite of love, lady with…, salome, slow dancing) and many, many, many, many remixes… I know cause I collect every single damn obtuse version of a song.

    A-Sides (my guesses):

  27. I think the tracks listed on the @U2.com website are definately suitable for a best of album. Granted I agree that they should not repeat songs from the first best of, but this is more about money than anything else. Besides we all already have all the songs, why are we complaining. I’m greatful for anything that gets U2 into the ears of other people; one’s who may not have the passion that we do. On another note, personally I would take out If God Would Send His Angels and replace it with Until the End of the World, which I think has some of the most prolific lyric writing on it than any song ever written. Send me comments or updates concerning this topic. Thanks

  29. WHAT?????
U2 not prolific enough to put together a double disc set?
    Are we kidding?
IMHO the last 10 years provided enough outstanding material to release a 4 disc anthology, or even a box-set!
And I’m not even likely to buy it if it won’t have Night & Day and at least a new track on it.
In fact I’m not gonna buy it if there’s no B-Side bonus CD.

You can tell I’m rather pissed.

  31. With ALL the B-Sides and great covers they did in 1991-1993 for Achtung, how could the boys NOT make a separate B-Sides disc. Plus, come on, seeling the 2nd edition in the same fashion as the first guarantees 2 things: Happier fans and more $$$.

  33. If Ian Robinson really likes his metal, he would be very suprised I think to know how many of those bands were heavily influenced by U2… He usually goes after obvious targets (N’Sync and such), but obviously, not everybody knows what’s up…

  35. Whoa … hold on a sec 😉 I didn’t say U2’s work didn’t warrant a 2-CD set — I only meant that their b-sides offering was not as voluminous. Also I’m not saying anything about the quality — quality’s job 1 for those boys. And you’re right about “I Will Follow” … I meant to say “Gloria”. My bad. I was writing the post whilst at work and sneaking it in w/o anyone seeing.

  37. Eh, who gives a crap what MTV dudes like Ian Robinson think. MTV sucks, anyway. VH1 is where its at. And whatever U2 releases as the best of, I am going to buy it anyway! But yeah, it would be awesome to see those Achtung Baby b-sides on one CD that I’ve been spending a long time looking for around the internet.

  39. Thats the biggest load of shit I have ever heard,
    1) I doubt ATYCLB will be included.
    2) If Everlasting Love is on it and Miss Sarejevo and ATYCLB, that leaves room for about 8 – 9 tracks and if it isn’t going to be a double CD well that would be fucked!
Anyways I don’t believe any of it

  41. I get the idea that the 1980-1990 best of was basically an A-Side/B-Side thing. Making a B-side for 1991-2000 would be pretty easy. You could probably fit all of the original B-sides on one disc.
Anyway, don’t count your chickens until they hatch. BTW, VH1 is not where it’s at. (Oh the pains of being flogged with “hip” adult-contemporary! Make it stop! Make it stop!) It’s just like MTV, but they’re aiming at a different demographic. We’re U2 fans, aren’t we a demographic of our own?

  43. I don’t know why everyone discounts ATYCLB from a Best of 1991-2000…I’ve always assumed ATYCLB tracks would be on it…the album came out in 2000! And actually I think all the ATYCLB singles were released as *singles* in 2000 on at least one side of the ocean, with the exception of Elevation… (shrug)

  47. No, the new singles would be “extras” as a means to preview the next “greatest” phase and sound of the band’s career. In this, I think it’s fitting ATYCLB tracks are on it. Sorta full circle.

  49. Adam Clayton’s comments in the new Rolling Stone (see atu2.com) would seem to contradict the idea that U2 is necessarily going for the greatest hits album before the new album. I for one think this is a good idea: Wait to release the next greatest hits until the band is tired and really burnt out, not when they are fresh and still have momemtum to apply toward new material

  51. fyi, just to dispel any lingering naivete… MTV and VH1 are owned by the same company. They just take your money in two different ways.

  57. First off, none of us should ever listen to what MTV or VH1 have to say until we read our own U2 newsgroups first. They will always have the latest and best information. Second, if U2 were to release only a single disc greatest hits, it would have to be in MP3 format and hold the 50 songs that could go on it. I could personally create a greatest hits, single and b-sides coleection, from my own collection. And it would be 3-4 discs long! Oh, they have enough material for 2 discs. That is for sure. Besides, one disc and two disc packages are a good marketing scheme.

  59. Surely by the horns of Mephisto and the shades of the Fly, the next best of set will come in 1 and 2 disc versions. What’s the deal with that soundtrack the boys are supposed to be working on? I think the best track listing would be as follows: The Fly, One, Mysterious Ways, Even Better than the Real Thing, Lemon, Stay, Daddy’s Gonna Pay, Miss Sarajevo, HMTMKMKM, Discotheque, Gone, Staring at the Sun, Please, Ground Beneath Her Feet, Beautiful Day, Stuck in a Moment, Walk On, Elevation. 61. To be totally honest – who cares? Most u2 fans would have all their albums anyway. Wait until u2 retires and bring out a box set of b sides/singles. Afterall, the only reason u2 are bringing out their greatest hits albums is to get filthy rich! Just imagine if REM brought out their Greatest Hits! At least they could justify 2 or more albums worth of Greatest Hits. When you look at it, though u2 have been around for years they haven’t produced that many albums – they have been more concerned with the quality of album and touring. These Greatest Hit albums are their ‘little’ retirement package.

  65. Jeff-o — it’s a slightly different mix. Different intro (minus the sirens), slightly different middle-eight/solo area (some overdubbed Bono vocals, just little “oooooh”s).
