Laz’s Shortlist Nominees

Larry Mullen’s nominees for the Shortlist Music Project 2002 are up on the Shortlist website. Larry’s picked JJ72 (Larry buys Irish), Andrew W.K., Bjork, The Hives and The Doves.

The Shortlist Music Project “honours today’s most creative and adventurous albums, focusing on emerging artists rather than established hitmakers.”

Here’s the longlist. My favourites from this list, would be Felix da Housecat (eat your heart out, Fischerspooner) and The Avalanches. I’d add Cathal Coughlan’s The Sky’s Awful Blue (Von B buys Irish too, you see), The Streets’ Original Pirate Material, and Kid Loco’s Kill Your Darlings.

More on The Shortlist Music Project.

  • You’re definitely not the only one, no. But there’s very little to “get” — he either excites and invigorates you, or he doesn’t. I think he’s spectacular, but I can see how his musical vocabulary turns other people off… ;-)

  • I vote for The Doves to open up the next tour. But I guess I have a thing for Autrailian and Canadian bands at the moment. Nice to see Larry get out of the house for a bit.

  • Doves are FANTASTIC. Some of the music on the new album is quite reminiscent on Unforgettable Fire / Joshua Tree era U2.

  • Can I throw in 16 Horsepower’s “Folklore”, the Dirty Three’s “Horse Stories” and Cat Power’s “Moon Pix”? Didn’t manage to get my hands on Cathal’s new one yet…

[Ed. note: This is the 64th in a series of personal essays by the @U2 staff about songs and/or albums that have had great meaning or impact in our lives.] I like the Pop album. There, I said it.
