Spiffy Digs

Today’s Page Six column of the New York Post reports that Bono may have a new home in New York City. He is rumored to be the buyer of Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ $14.7 million triplex tower apartment in the San Remo on Central Park West. Currently, Bono owns an apartment in the El Dorado, which is just down the street from the San Remo.

  1. While I think this apartment has more sq. footage than the one he has now, I don’t know why a man with four kids keeps buying two bedroom apts! Although, it certainly is big enough for more bedrooms. Not to mention needing that spare room for when Edge comes around. (g)

vonb, yes the majority of buildings surrounding Central Park (at least on the west, east and south) are in that style. It’s funny though, I had always imagined B. to be a Tribeca loft kinda guy. 🙂

  3. i agree, i could see bono hanging out in tribeca and soho with bobby deniro. this just gives me more of an incentive to visit nyc again, that city is amazing. and while we may think thats a waste of money, its like pocket change to bono! If i had the money i would have houses all over the place!

  5. Nice place. I can see the San Remo from my window at work, actually. Maybe a nice little 2-bedroom place is a getaway for him and Ali when they feel the need for alone time – and the extra bedroom could be converted into a music room. Although I’d take everything with a grain of salt given it was written up in the Post.

  7. Dear Spiffy Digs:
I thought your comments were excellent. My friend Jamie was at the Grammys. I wish I could share that New york city feeling with you. I guess I will hear it all later. Maybe Next year I will be at the Grammys. I need more support for my writing. Then I hope to finish my music. I hope we have a World of Peace.

  11. jeez. so much money, so much stupidity. Bono should practice what he preaches. I’m not saying Bono should give away ALL his money, but having all that money and just spending them on a luxuroius apartment two blocks away from your other luxurious apartment is really kind of disgusting.

  13. Debaser – we don’t know the facts. who really knows for sure what he is spending his money on?

  15. Also, real estate is one of the better, more secure long-term investments out there unless you’re buying swampland. Good time to buy in NYC at the moment, when the economy gets better it will go up.

  17. who the hell cares where Bono lives. If he wanted to spend $14 mil on a apt, car, or ass-scratcher, then good for him. Just because he preaches like the man, doesn’t mean he also took the vow of poverty.

  19. Oh you silly children, Bono could give all his hard earned money away, you would say he’s a fool, still. He deserves the nice things he has and shouldn’t give a rats ass what anyone thinks. But, somehow I think he does.

  21. It’s the New York Post, the last thing they got right was the date.

I wish to hell they’d keep their mouths shut about where he lives, seem to recall another moral, intelligent, committed artist whose address on the Upper West Side was well known, and he never made it past his 40th birthday BECAUSE his address was common knowledge.

  23. I’m from London but was staying at the Chelsea Hotel in NY last weekend…Bono may belong at San Remo but I can see MacPhisto retiring to the Chelsea!

  25. perhaps bono and edge might want to play a game of short wave walkie-talkies, hence the move two doors down. btw, what stunning aritecture. *sigh*.

  27. I just had to say…John Lennon was not killed cuz the killer knew where he lived…he was killed cuz this world has whackos who’ll WANT to know that kind of stuff and WANT to kill. Lots of people know stuff…it’s what they do with knowledge that kills. Speaking of John Lennon…it’s TAX SEASON…TAXMAN.

  29. No one deserves SUCH AMOUNTS of money. Not Bono, not anyone. Sure, Bono deserve some of it, he should be acknowledged for his music. But in the music business some people get so filthy rich, it’s ridiculous. If you don’t practice what you preach, you can’t really expect people to take you seriously.

  31. I agree very much with you Debaser! Noone deserves to be THAT rich! Its a very good example of the worlds situation where 1/5 of the worlds population spends 4/5 of the worlds resources. I dont think anyone can come up with a good argument that Bono needs this apartment.

  33. Oh please. Who is going to be the arbiter as to how much someone deserves to make? You? How about me? What’s your annual income, maybe I don’t think you deserve it. What nonsense. People forget that Bono is an artist, and his entire income is dependent on people’s whims — if all of a sudden people decide they are not interested in what you do, so long. It’s the luck of the draw, and they lucked out. Fair play to them. There are millions of talented artists who can’t afford to pay their rent, and thousands of hacks who make a fortune. All of this palaver about Bono’s income and trying to paint him as a hypocrite has nothing to do with Bono, it has to do with other people’s jealousy and frustration. Don’t visit your problems on someone else’s head. It’s common practice, but you can’t build yourself up by trying to knock someone else down.

  35. If Bono wants more of my money to help people in Africa, or any other cause using taxpayer dollars, AND he has some influence to make that happen, then he needs to practice what he preaches or lose me as a fan. Maybe he makes $14 million donations and we don’t hear about it, but until and unless we do, spending $14 million on a house and asking me for money doesn’t cut it.

  37. Bono has said repeatedly that he doesn’t want your money for Africa. He believes you’ve already given enough of your hard earned cash. He just wants you to tell your elected leaders to spend more of the contribution you’ve given on the crisis in Africa. He hasn’t gone around making speeches condemning people that make $75,000 and go into debt buying houses and cars, which is a fairly typical American scenario. I suppose if you bought your home, your automobile, and all your “things” with up front cash, and those things were a lesser proportion of your net worth than the things Bono has spent his money on compared to his net worth, then you might (might!) have room to criticize his spending habits.

Bono is not the type to advertise his charitable contributions, either. The scriptures mention not making a show of your good works. Bono isn’t accountable to you on how he spends his money, he’s accountable to God, and I’m sure he’s well aware of that fact.

  39. This is all very interesting about Bono’s apartments & Africa, but really what else needs to be said? How about an open-house party at his new $14 million apartment with an acoustic U2 cocktail hour? Proposed set list… Promenade—Kite—Beautiful Day—Gone—Shadows & Tall Trees—Out of Control—Always Forever Now (with special guest Brian Eno)—Please (with special guest Elvis Costello)—Desire—Angel of Harlem—One Tree Hill—So Cruel—A Sort of Homecoming—Encore: Love is Blindness—Mysterious Ways—A Day Without Me.

  45. this is what happens when you have such a high profile, it sucks but what can you do? I also think its ridiculous how much musicians and actors get paid. But i can’t say they dont deserve it, i can just say that the extreme income inequality, especially in the US, is insane. nevertheless, bono should keep doing what he’s doing, he is THE MAN!

  47. Yeah, no one can prove that Bono needs that apartment. But can anyone here prove that they “need” to spend hundreds of dollars on, say, expensive rock concerts? Movies? DVDs? CDs? Brand clothes? Eating out? If you put together the amount of money an average person spends on things he/she doesn’t really need, it’s an absolute bloody fortune.

  49. sure, but it get’s no near the sums Bono has in his hands.
And I must say that I don’t buy much of those things you pointed out,Daria, I hardly spend any at the moment, ’cause I hardly have an income.

  57. Did it ever occur to anyone that the reason for the new digs is, just maybe, because it affords him the type of security needed when he, the band, or Ali and or kids come to town? (Even though I can’t picture a 6 member family in a 2 bedroom? what’s that about.but I digress) He needs protection from all these wackos who feel he makes too much money and may feel inclined to tell him so, in person. And on another note he may not pull in a 9 to 5er each day, but no one complains when he works so hard in concert and studio. I’ll continue to suppot U2 and their causes with what little bit I can do. Even if it’s just purchasing a cd. When you give of your time and faith it comes back 10 fold. Walking the walk and talking the talk, and of course making a joyful noise.
