The Tooth Larry

Larry Mullen and Anne Acheson were among the guests who attended the Tooth Fairy Ball at the Kilmainham Royal Hospital last Friday. The charity event, which was organized in part by Bono’s wife Ali Hewson, raised Euro 200,000 to build a dental clinic in Africa. Ali attended the event without her husband, who presumably was working in the studio (see The Part-Time Musician).

One / Ave Maria

Whether megalomania or humility, we’re not sure what made Bono rewrite the lyrics to the song, but here’s Bono’s version of Schubert’s Ave Maria. He performed it with Pavarotti just after a rather shaky solo performance of One, in Modena, Italy, tonight.

Return to Basics, Part 2

“It’s hard to describe it, other than it’s just a very raw rock n’ roll album. A band in its primary colours of guitar, bass, drums, voice and a lot of vitality and energy…so far anyway. By the time it comes out it could be a country and western album.
–The Edge on U2’s next album

Speaking with Xfm Online at the Ivor Novello Awards last week, The Edge confirmed that the band will spend the rest of the year finishing the new album and tour in 2004.

The Part-time Musician

Is Bono trying the patience of the band again with the time he is devoting to charity work? According to man himself, the answer is yes.

“I’m actually on the edge of being chucked out of the band,” Bono told the Daily Telegraph (reg. req.) at Time magazine’s awards last week. “[Charity work] takes up 50 per cent of my time,” he said.

Bono followed by saying he intends to devote some time to music: “I’m off to the studio to spend the weekend recording stuff I should have done ages ago.”

Adam’s Fancy Door Prop

Awards are not all that special to Adam Clayton. When questioned about what he will do with the Ivor Novello award the band received last week, Adam replied, “I’ll probably use it to prop open a door.” (Source: Daily Express)

Pavarotti and Friends and Bono

Pavarotti & Friends will be broadcast (radio and internet) on radio rtl 102,5 , tonight at 20.45 PM CET. (Find out details for your timezone here)

During rehearsals, Bono tried out “Miserere” with Pavarotti and Zucchero and an “Ave Maria”. Not happy with this track, Bono cut the rehearsal of this song short. He then played “One”, much like the version performed at the 1995 Pavarotti and Friends. It seems likely “One” will be played instead of “Ave Maria” at the show tonight. (info via Zooitalia.com)

Il Messaggero published the lyrics of Bono’s version of “Ave Maria”:
