7 days to bring U2 to Mexico
7 Dias, a new Mexican film, is about Claudio, a U2 fan caught cheating the Mafia out of half a million dollars to get the band to play in Monterrey, Mexico. His life is spared when the son of the mafia boss, also a U2 fan, convinces his father to grant Claudio a period of 7 days grace.
U2 are thanked on the web site: “We could never thank enough U2 for making this miracle happen for 7 Dias.”
Release dates: Mexico 30 September 2005, USA 4 November 2005
Bono reveals plans for ‘Red’-campaign
Bono is furious about the G8 outcome, but blames the lack of a movement:
“People say, are you upset after the G8, you didn’t get this, this and this — of course I am. I am furious. But they blame the politicians. I blame us. We don’t have the movement yet.”
U2′s frontman analyses the results of the G8 meeting with British economist and activist Noreena Hertz in an extensive interview for VPRO’s current affairs show Tegenlicht (‘Backlight’).
Bono talks to Hertz about the results of the G8 summit in Gleneagles this summer and his continuing work as a lobbyist. He also reveals his plans for the new ‘Red-campaign’, which asks companies such as Apple and Nike to produce red coloured products, symbolising the AIDS emergency.
Watch the full interview, recorded backstage at U2′s show in Gothenburg this summer on VPRO Tegenlicht’s website (from September 23).
The interview is part of the VPRO Tegenlicht documentary ‘Noreena’s Agenda’, which will be broadcast on Dutch television on September 25. The full documentary can be viewed online from September 26 onwards, at www.vpro.nl/noreenasagenda
Bono Rocks the Free World with Pearl Jam
So it’s a little late, but better late then never right?
Bono joined Pearl Jam for Neil Young’s ‘Rockin in the Free World’ in Toronto. He sang a bit and bashed some tambourines around.
“It would be difficult to work harder than that man, keeping us in a free world.” – Eddie Vedder
Chicago Firsts
For the first time ever, U2 performed “The First Time” for a Chicago audience last night at the first of their two-night jaunt in the Windy City. The song came as a request from a fan who asked Bono earlier in the day to perform something from Zooropa. The performance was just one of several special treats Chicago fans received — among them, an acoustic performance of “Walk On” (a first for the Vertigo tour) in which Bono failed to remember the lyrics and had to request them on paper; a slick version of “Discotheque,” improved over the Vertigo tour debut in Toronto; and a snippet of another Zooropa song, “Daddy’s Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car,” at the end of “The Fly.”

Toronto 4: The week ends with disco balls
Gee, we don’t know what more to say about Toronto 4 than what our editor-in-chief had to say. Yes, U2 played “Discotheque.” (Audio/video to come soon now available.) We think we liked Willie’s light show for the song more than we liked the musical performance. (Oops, did we say that aloud?) Pretty, colorful disco balls displayed across the curtain lights as Bono sang a snippet of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “Relax.” Très eighties!
Once again, Daniel Lanois performed “One” with U2 for their final Vertigo show in Toronto. We suspect that the band might like him or something.
Later in the show, Bono proved our suspicions about Lanois correct by giving special thanks to the Canadian producer for his musical guidance through the years.
Hmm, what else is there to say about Toronto 4? U2 brought an American on stage: Mr. Eddie Vedder from a lil band called Pearl Jam to sing “Old Man River.” (See video link below.)
It would have been more entertaining to hear Vedder add his vocals to a U2 song, but we won’t complain.
- Eddie Vedder – Old Man River
- Discotheque – part 1
- Discotheque – part 2
Postage stamp sized video, audio ok
U2 treat Toronto to a Pop-selection
Boom. Cha. While we await full reports from our troops on the ground, we’re going to tease you with this short and simple statement: They played Discotheque!
Set: City of Blinding Lights / Vertigo / Elevation / Electric Co. / The Ocean / Beautiful Day / Miracle Drug / Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own / Love and Peace or Else / Sunday Bloody Sunday / Bullet the Blue Sky / Miss Sarajevo / Pride / Where the Streets Have No Name / One / Discotheque / The Fly / With or Without You / All Because of You / Fast Cars / Yahweh / 40
Daniel Lanois plays guitar on One, Eddie Vedder joins them near the end for a few bars of Ol’ man river. The ‘Pop Muzik’ intro starts the encore and the screen shows PopMart imagery.
