Instant Karma for NYC

Instant Karma’s gonna get you
Gonna knock you off your feet

U2 knocked the audience at Madison Square Garden off its feet this evening (Nov. 21) by performing a full version of John Lennon’s “Instant Karma” with Patti Smith, who opened the show. Bono introduced the song by saying the band wanted to do “something special for New York City.”

The Lennon tune was followed by the show’s final song, “Bad,” for which Bono led the crowd to sing “People Have the Power” by Smith.

  • i was lucky to be there. a great night. interesting to note that patti made an anti-war speech midway through her opening set and was roundly booed.
during instant karma with u2, about midway through the song, patti went and stood on larry’s drum riser and sang straight at him. it was a very cool moment.

  • James, your question is the one most asked with this tour. The song is “Wake Up” by Arcade Fire.

  • Brilliant brilliant show, and in my section (right at the edge of the front of the ellipse) there was a lot of applause for her speech, she did a helluva set, best opening act they’ve ever had in my opinion (rivaled by ramones, pixies, or public enemy but didn’t see either of those) overall a brilliant show though.

  • i agree she was mindblowingly great, and i also cheered her speech. but inarguably, the overwhelming reaction to her speech was loud booing.

  • This show was the first I’ve ever seen in the US, the first indoor this tour, my first time in MSG ánd the first time I had a seat insead of GA. I wasn’t disappointed, it was really relaxing not to queue, I enjoyed Patty Spit,er..Smith and the show was amazing, especially the fantastic lightshow that you completely miss out on when you’re up front. And Instant Karma!! As a big Beatles-fan I was totally blown away by that, as I was when they played Sgt. Pepper with Paul McCartney.
As for the snippets, I think Bono sang ‘I won’t go down with this ship’ from Dido’s White Flag twice during the show, did anyone else hear it?
