U2 in the land Down Under

GCBFrontPageSML.JPG

U2 have arrived in Queensland, Australia and set up camp in a reportedly ‘stupid expensive’ hotel on the Gold Coast. While their crew continues to work on getting the venue ready for the show, the band will take a few days to acclimatise. Bono told the press: “I don’t really feel like Bono at the moment, I looked in the mirror and saw a little man with sunken eyes.”

Their Denton interview from March this year is going to be repeated on Monday and the band will appear on Rove on Tuesday night.

The stage in Brisbane is almost fully set up.

We haven’t had any info yet on how GA lines are going to be handled. Aussie fans, we welcome your reports and tips.

Meanwhile, Billboard publishes the U218singles track list, including the new song ‘Window in the Skies’, and U2place.net has what might be the album sleeve.

  • I’ve sent a squillion emails to people asking what the procedure is for GA entry… but haven’t had *any* responses yet :( Will just have to line up as early as possible and hope sanity prevails on the day.

  • You can find a Q & A about Sydney here:

Basically no lining up for GA until 9am on day of show.

I saw something on http://www.lyptonvillage.org/u2/ about a statment for Brisbane & Melbourne with essentially the same rules.

  • Cheers for the info Cath, I was more anxious to find out how they are going to handle the GA queues in terms of allowing access into the inner barrier. I did read somewhere that the decision on whether it is a random entry or ‘first in, first served’ would be left for the promoter on the day… thats not all that comforting if you are planning to start lining up at 9am and miss out being up the front. Though being there is better than not being there at all i guess.

  • So no reports of what they rehearsed? Too much sunlight in Queensland!

  • I was at QSAC tonight where U2 were rehearsing – they played an awesome set as follows:

    1. COBL
    2. Vertigo
    3. Elevation
    4. Until The End of the World (Minimal singing by Bono)
    5. Kite (New Version – About 4 times incomplete, then one complete version. The song was just strings and bono for the first verse (no acoustic guitar), then the bass kicked in for the pre-chorus, then the full band kicked in after the first chorus. Then, the song took off at the end with Edge soloing – it was incredible!)
    6. Walk On (Full Band)
    7. Beautiful Day
    8. Stuck in a Moment (Full Band – Edge on Electric Guitar)
    9. Sometimes You Can’t…
    10. Love and Peace or Else
    11. Sunday Bloody Sunday
    12. Bullet (Johnny Comes Marching Snippet)
    13. Miss Sarajevo
    (Human Rights Declaration)

  • There’s a Make Poverty History concert being staged in Melbourne on November 17th, the day between U2′s Adelaide and Melbourne gigs. Will U2 make a surprise appearance? Every one of the concert organisers I’ve spoken to has denied U2 will make an appearance, and they were sincere about it so I believe them. But this rumour was circulating a few months ago and it’s strange how quiet it is now U2 are in town. I may just have to endure the other acts in case U2 do show up! If anyone has a spare ticket to the Melbourne gigs they’d like to donate or sell to me, please help me!

  • Leprechaun, I just spoke to a friend who is at the Brisbane show. Caroline tells me that she got there at 9:30am, and joined the queue, and that some people who had been there since 5am were not turned away. Apparently people were running from the entrance to the barrier, once the gates opened. She said security were not very flexible or friendly about people holding spots in the queue for friends and had threatened that anyone running once inside the stadium would be kicked out (but weren’t). I realise this is a 2nd hand report, but hopefully we’ll hear more about how it went tonight. Oh, and Caroline ended up 2nd from the front!

[Ed. note: This is the 64th in a series of personal essays by the @U2 staff about songs and/or albums that have had great meaning or impact in our lives.] I like the Pop album. There, I said it.
