  1. For the first time in 27 years, i had the thought, shut up Bono!
with a quirky smile of course-

it soumds great, although anything would sound pretty good at this point 🙂

His voice does sound pretty daqrn good though.

it would be nice to hear the ’87 version of Waves too-

  3. When listening to those snippets of “Rise Up” and “Desert of Our Love”, you can hear all the sounds that contributed so greatly to “The Joshua Tree” — Adam’s rolling basslines, Larry’s reggae-tinged rhythms, Edge’s bursts of light and, of course, Bono’s howl. He had such a howl to his voice back then. His voice sounds good on “Waves of Sorrow” (I started to type “Waves of Joy” thinking of lyric from “End of the World”). It’s cool to watch Bono’s animation while he reminisces back to ’87 and the origin of that song. Hopefully his excitement will spill-over to the new album sessions.

  5. I agree re: Bono’s voice. It sounds good, vibrant, and still full of energy. I know all the touring etc might take it out of him on the road, and indeed it has on the last tour or two; but he’s sounding in fine fettle for now, so that’s got to be good for the new album at least!

One thing I’ll be hoping for on the new album is a return to the ‘soul’ or ‘passion’ of the Joshua Tree sessions. I know they don’t like repeating themselves etc, but the last few albums have been a bit sterile or over-produced IMO, and they’re lacking the emotional subtleties of key JT tracks such as: MOTD / WOWY / ISHFWILF / OTH / BTBS etc, which were all brimming with emotion, passion and rage in equal dollops.

I even remember reading somewhere in the last year or so that Larry feels this way about the HTDAAB album in particular. I like that album, but it just feels a bit hollow in some way, particularly when you compare it to some of the earlier albums (at least that’s my opinion)

Anyway – make it new; make it interesting; make it quickly(!); but do what you’ve always done: make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck!!

ps: does anyone know why ‘Streets’ will be missing off of the forthcoming Paris ’87 DVD?

Just wondering, and here’s to a new album in March 2008 (wishful thinking???)

  7. I must say, one listen and the hook is in my head.

    Well done, young men!

… and a rather old bloke who looks more like a Happy Monday than the leader of the free world.

  9. This is really fascinating. It seems to be a Facebook idea – it was shot by the iLike app creator. This is really cool – totally laidback and unaffected.

  11. I think it’s fascinating since it’s ‘authentic’ media, rather than an over produced, overly thought out publicity machine.

  13. It real is U2bish!

aren’t the recorded vocals recently added? it sounded as though he was saying that the band hadn’t heard it yet with the added vocals?

    …and when the rain came…

  15. totally, von b. the iLike creator says this was two years of convincing the management to do something like this online. 1.25 mil Facebook U2 fans hard to argue with. I think it’s such a great piece of footage – shot on a cameraphone – because the person doing it is so cool about it. The whole set up is awesome.

I also love how animated Bono is talking about the music. For once!

  17. So this is a song “leftover” from JT that has been re-recorded (like “Sweetest Thing”)? I thought it was just a B-side that has been dusted off and released.

    Interesting…

  19. I listened to it once and suddenly I’m listening to it again and again. I think it’s typical of the style of material the boys created at that time, there’s something about the music that’s quite stiring and ambient. Very hard to explain but I’m hooked. A song like this reaffirms my love for their music, I’m sure some of you would agree! 😉

  21. This is embarrassing for me to watch. It’s like a scene from “The Office” with Ricky Gervais or something.

How can people not cringe at how dopey Bono is? Singing along to your own album on camera?

  23. No offense Bonaparte, but i am on so far on the other side of that fence-

His nervous excitement about digging out this gem of a song, couldn’t you feel it?

The Solomon part and the glow on his face…”he was a song writer” as he explains it to us-

I think you may want to look again or perhaps not-

But Alison, i agree with you i am hooked to it’s hook!
I could see this being a hit, although i said that about Windows, so i may always be a bit too biased-
this does, even just the snippet we have heard, crush Windows lyrically anyway~

  25. IMHO: I thought “Windows” was OK in its instrumental workmanship, but weaker lyrically and vocally. The “new” song is stronger than “Windows” b/c it was written during JT sessions, so it immediately has the feel of the songs from that album and era for the band.

  27. i think bono is trying too hard to sell us this song. i mean, did he have to do that with any other JT or AB songs, or did they let the music be heard and leave it up to us to decide if it’s good or not?

    america, fuck yeah!
