First review of U2′s new single ‘Get On Your Boots’

Alan Cross, the host of the radio edition of ExploreMusic, has heard U2′s new song ‘Get On Your Boots’, expected to be the band’s first single off their upcoming album ‘No Line on the Horizon’. He describes the song and his 20+ years experience with the rituals and security surrounding a new U2 release. He writes:

“There are some new sounds that could only come from an Eno/Lanois production, which left me with a feeling similar to what I experienced when I heard “The Fly” for the first time. This is NOT a back-to-basics guitar/bass/drums track like “Vertigo” or even “Beautiful Day.” There’s some definite sonic evolution going on here. “

  • I know exactly what Alan Cross is talking about when he mentions the Fly.

The Fly is the song that literally turned me inside out and showed me colours that I had never been seen. I was a teenager at the time, embarrassingly ignorant of music even though two years earlier Rattle & Hum had taken me to the cusp of shedding my country bumpkin cocoon of Def Leppard and Phil Collins (I did mention embarrassing, right?). The feelings that washed over me when navigating the Fly’s kaleidoscopic soundscape has never left me. I’ll leave it to your imaginatons what Mysterious Ways made me feel. ;-)

  • Hey! I have heard it and its great! The song is similar to Queens “Bicicle Race” with its “chaingun ryhmes” i mean the “I don’t believe in Peter Pan Frankenstein or Superman” sort of quick, funny type of rhymes . It also reminds me of Billy Joel “We didnt start the fire!” in the same sense. Especially with lyrics ” Einstein, James Dean, Brooklyn’s got a winning team ,Davy Crockett, Peter Pan, Elvis Presley, Disneyland”. They are the same type of rhymes.

  • Sorry to say, but as an old fan, this single left me as cold as Discotheque and Beautiful day. It really is just boring and goes nowhere. If the rock is in it’s place, there’s no roll.

I was expecting lots of the new record with it’s middle eastern influences and what not, but now the expectations lowered quite a bit…i just hope my heroes of music have not lost a plot complitely!

  • Discoteque definitely threw me off a bit-

WOWY with the drum machine, Larry oh Larry, that was a big leap for us true punky U2 fans-

Beautful Day? now that is a great anthem-

Vertigo combined with the ipod crap was bearable

As for GOYB, still growing on me, but it was far from what i was expecting. Isn’t that partly what we love about U2?
We didn’t start the Fast Cars, so Pump it up, get a little Vertigo and join in on a bicycle race in the Wild Wild West-

By the way…liltoja…Africa is not in the middle east :)
