Magnificent – U2′s official video full of sheet

magnificent-video2

Watch the video for ‘Magnificent’, the second single off U2′s album No Line on the Horizon. It was directed by Alex Courtes and shot in Fez, Morocco. Which is such a beautiful place they had to cover it up with sheets, like Christo. Um, that’s a wrap?

  • Good idea, great song, but the director didn’t know what to do with it. I can just imagine it going down like this: “What do you MEAN four minutes of Fez covered in sheets is too long?! OK OK, we’ll cut it down to two. I’ll just fill the rest of the time with the band walking down the street in slow motion.”

  • I like it – but I too could’ve done without the band walking in slow mo. Seemed kind of pointless other than to show the band.

  • Another pedestrian video from the band that did ‘All I want is you’ and ‘One’(bisons or Corbijn versions). What exactly makes Courtes special?

  • The title of this post made me laugh out loud. You’re gonna make me choke on my breakfast!

This video is OK. It’s an interesting idea. Generally speaking, I’m not a big fan of performance-based U2 videos. I kept wondering the whole time what the sheets are supposed to represent.

  • Don’t like that they edited the song down. And please, for the love of god, if you post a review about this video or the song, stop saying that it’s magnificent. It’s not original anymore, and frankly, you can think of something better. That is all.

  • Rolling Stone love it.

    Exotic location = good?

This is what I would have done with it: use the footage of the city and the sheets, the locals going about their business, the dancers. Don’t move the camera around. Just long, slow moving shots. No band footage at all.

  • For such a beautiful song full of emotional lyrics, the video is emotionally flat. It doesn’t move me.

The camera angle on the people dancing is plain wrong. They look awkward instead of flowing and beautiful — particularly the guy in the red hoodie.

I’d like to see what Corbijn would have done with this song video-wise. I’m not impressed with Courtes.

  • Good tune. Uninspiring video.

  • The video has a hair on the top to 0.18 minutes in the film camera that focuses on Larry Mullen

AAAAAAAAhhhh I LOVE “MAGNIFICENT: BEHIND THE SCENES IN MOROCCO” is better than the official.

Even Better Than The Real Thing Childdd.

U2 melancholy go listen to another band, and live in the past!

  • Here we go again with the crap videos. I was so happy with Boots. What the hell happend? This is just bad. What a great song, this should have been a very special video. Why don’t they let Adam shoot a video? What could go wrong? It could be fantastic or just as boring. Its a win win situation letting Adam shoot a video if you ask me, but really nobody has so I will be quiet now.

  • The video gave me the feeling and sense of freedom…it is a poetic visualization of being free. The sheets unwrapping from the buildings signifies letting go and flying free and certainly accompanied with the music which does create joy in itself signifies a lighter and more joyful state of being. I could apply this concept to many situations around the world. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to unwrap the binding injustices that put so many people in strait jackets. Leave it to U2 – one more sheet to the wind. I hope the message goes around the world to unwrap the binding ties and let people be free. For me it is definitely a feel good video. I can see why U2 liked the concept. My only question is this – why the camera shot – about the 3:50 mark – the scene went from a sheet flying – finally free – to a close tight shot of a “rear end” view of (I believe) Bono walking……I haven’t quite worked that transition out. I suppose one could fantasize a little… or maybe a lot….

  • pretty dull video. It was nothing but filler – it took 4 minutes for a sheet to come off a building. not their best video. But at least they shortened that dumb intro for the song…

  • great song… and yet another poor video. always been that way with this band ( except for a select few videos ). I gave up on the videos long ago. full credit on the Boots video, however.

  • Pearls the idea is great, that concept is great too. But

When I saw the behind the scenes, so many good pictures to take, so many characters, so rich the city, architecture, dancing girls and much more. I think that there was no time to edit, there are errors of dynamics, rhythm and detail, Adam Clayton jumping after Adam still in less than a millisecond, the hair on camera, good dance underestimated. Try another director would be better, or give it more time. But it was. In my opinion, the director failed to use the resources or the director is tired of U2.

The idea from “matt” is GREAT!

  • Disjointed, boring, limp. My favourite song on the album gets the worst U2 video I’ve seen. Showed it to a few friends, and one asked, “What’s with the retarded guy?” I had to explain to him what Sufi dancing is, but I think it raises a point that no one will get it because the video is just too vague and doesn’t know what it wants to do. I love the sheets idea, but the rest… bleh. Magnificent deserves much, much better. I actually prefer the Fred Falke Magnicifent Remix video!

  • what a shame the band is in this video – why do they always have to be in each video… i like the sheets, like the people, shame about the band (though they seem to have quite a good time, even larry is smiling behind his drum kit! – that’s been a while)

  • The Resource Miracle May 22, 2012
[Note: This essay appeared in the May 28, 2012, edition of TIME magazine.] It's become the go-to cliché of modern economics. Natural resources are a "curse." When a nation is over-reliant on one or two commodities like oil or precious minerals, corrupt government ministers and their dodgy associates hoard profits and taxes instead of properly […]

It looks like Bono’s contribution was recorded within the past week, but that’s just a guess. [...]This is a post from the @U2 blog.Bono Pays […]
