U2 play ‘Magnificent’ on Pat Kenny’s Late Late Show
U2 played ‘Magnificent’ and talked to Pat Kenny on RTE’s Late Late Show on Friday evening. It was Kenny’s last time hosting the show. He hosted the show for ten years, having taken over from Gay Byrne in 1999. U2 brought some farewell gifts for the host: a rare ‘Music Rising’ Gibson Les Paul guitar and a pair of shades. Ten years earlier they had seen Gay Byrne off with a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Bono revealed that early on in their career the band had a meeting discussing the possible firing of their manager Paul McGuinness since he seemed unable to get the band a van for transportation. As they were debating this in Dublin’s ‘Captain America’s‘ restaurant a man sat next to them approached them. He said he couldn’t help overhearing their discussion and he thought they were making a big mistake. He knew McGuinness and thought highly of him. When Bono asked the man for his name, he said he was Louis Walsh, later manager of Westlife and now known as a judge on British television show The X-Factor.

Bono is definitely singing here, but nobody else’s amp is on – they are playing over a dubbed track, which is kinda sad, considering this is the greatest band ever. Hopefully they actually play this ‘live’ when the tour starts. Oh, by the way, they will open the set with ‘Magnificent’ – book it.

Nice performance.
Jay: regarding the live singing over a backing track. U2 have been playing the songs mostly completely live on TV shows this year, so the decision to play over a backing herre is probably due to the TV companies ability (or not) to mix/produce/broadcast a live band.

Jules … Yeah, I knew about the backing track. I know everything about every performance U2 has ever had, frankly. I just think it’s sad. U2 should never, ever have to fake it. And if Willie is reading this, for the love of god, PLEASE bring back the flood lights for the ‘Streets’ intro. You took it away on the last tour, and that was a total joke. So please bring it back.

i dunno about it all being a backing track … perhaps just the keyboard intro and then in the background during the rest of the song … Larry’s drums definitely had that live “pinging” sound IMHO … tough to tell Adam’s bass and parts of Edge’s guitar-work …
that said, nobody should have doubt that they’ll play the song “mostly” live on tour. since they started utilizing a more “layered” sound with keyboards on “Unforgettable Fire”, their live performances have had some level of backing track (think someone’s actually playing the keyboards on “Bad” or “WOWY”? nope just a sequencer and Larry likely listening via click track to make sure he keeps the right time)

jay, why do u need to advertise this kind of thing repeatedly? why the posturing? Though it may seem to you that this may bring you more credibility – to me, it works quite the opposite …

Bouke – I have every U2 show on CD since the Unforgettable Fire Tour, and almost every show from every tour before that (at least what’s out there). I’ve listened to said shows over and over and over again since 1987. Ask me a question about any U2 show on any U2 tour, and I can probably answer it off the top of my head. You questioned my fandom earlier, and I’m here to let you know that I doubt you’ll find a bigger U2 fan anywhere. Trust me.

OH NOES! … Why didn’t anyone tell me being a U2 fan was a contest? D’ya think we could get Larry to award the prize to the winner? I remember a few choice quotes from the hitman about obsessive fans. Now Jay – please take your prize – the latest and greatest Promo Bono doll – from the lovely admins, and then proceed to STFU

Jay – give it up. It’s not a competition. And your treating it that way – makes you look more than silly.
