U2 to headline Glastonbury Festival

Update: Michael Eavis has confirmed U2 will headline the 40th edition of the Glastonbury Festival on Friday, June 25th 2010.

The Sun reports U2 are lined up for the UK’s Glastonbury Festival next year, citing a ‘source’ who says “Everyone is over the moon that the deal has been done.”

It’s not too long ago (2007) that the NME reported Eavis wouldn’t be calling U2 any time soon, having been turned down by them once too often. In 2006, the concert promotor was quoted saying “Glastonbury is too big for U2″.

Tickets to the festival, which will take place from Wed June 23rd to Sun June 27th, sold out before any acts had been announced. According to The Sun U2 are supposed to headline on Friday, June 25, between their Edmonton and Minneapolis shows.

Promotor John Giddings confirmed U2′s Glastonbury appearance via Twitter: “it is true u2 headline the fri night @ glastonbury they fly back for the weekend in the middle of their u.s. tour”, and organiser Michael Eavis said: “I promised the the best possible line-up for the show next year and the confirmation that U2 will play their first ever Glastonbury – and their first major festival gig since the early 1980s – is fantastic news. We’ve been trying for years… And now we’ve finally made it happen. I’m sure they will pull out all the stops to make next year’s Glastonbury the most memorable ever.”

U2.com quote Paul McGuinness: “The band is really looking forward to it”, and state this will be the only UK/Ireland show for U2 in 2010.
