Berlin picture set by ~E

I’ve just uploaded my pictures from Berlin, which I thought you might enjoy. A very awkward concert, with the news of the London bombings ringing in our ears. A beautiful setting, with a very strong history as well as Very moderate organisation, some rain, and very slippery and dangerous steps onto the pitch. Also the first concert I have attended where security actually told us to run onto the pitch.

For me it was the first time with a new camera; a birthday gift to myself. I have only used it at this show so far, but am liking it a lot. Hopefully you’ll enjoy these pictures as much as I do.

This set of pictures taken in Berlin includes images of Bono having his shoes changed, picking up a banner, which read “Solidarity” and draping it over one of the monitors, but also of him choosing a girl in a Ramones shirt to join him on the stage (and he actually spotted her as soon as he came onto the stage).

I’ll try to get some more images and words together in the next couple of days and at the next couple of shows, before I return to the real world.

Come on!

Manchester security a disgrace

While we weren’t on site for the U2 concert in Manchester ourselves, reports are pouring in from the Manchester gig, specifying some extremely odd practices going on.

According to reports, people were given different instructions at different gates, sometimes even contradicting previous instructions. People with seated tickets were allowed early entry, disturbing the GA line, and causing lots of unrest.

While people were still in line at one gate, waiting for the doors to open, they were told the doors on the other side had already opened, causing even more panic and dangerous situations. In fact, the door on one side did open a lot earlier than on the other side, which coupled with wristband confusions caused people to miss out on getting into the first enclosure, despite having waited in line from early hours. We were told one girl broke her arm in the chaos and missed out on seeing U2 altogether.

But to top all this, reports have reached us that corrupt security stewards were actually offering desperate fans wristbands against hard cash (5 to 10 pounds).

But these are not the only problems. Now Ticketmaster, lastminute.com, and other ticket suppliers have refused to send out tickets to addresses outside of the UK. Foreign visitors are forced to collect their tickets at the box office, which can be a lot of hassle when planning to queue nice and early. And then there’s the people who ordered their tickets to be sent home, now can’t go and are now suddenly facing a box office collection.

We have it on good authority that Twickenham is doing their best to resolve the issues that came up in Manchester and we give them a big thumbs up for that.

While we realise U2 are not directly responsible for security measures taken at the different venues, we just wanted to give a shout out to make clear there have been security problems surrounding the gigs. Hopefully something will be done to ease things up a little and prevent people from getting hurt.

Hello hello from Gelsenkirchen, Germany! 9am and freezing cold. Queueing has started early with about 100 people already here, breakfasting on beer and burgers. Schalke stadium is looming over us like a fortress waiting to be conquered. More later!

The third set of results from the 2012 U2 Fan Survey is now available, and it takes us through your votes on U2's albums and songs. As a reminder, the survey was open from April 5th through April 30th. We received completed responses from 3,530 fans in 79 countries this year, both of which are down from 2010. We think that's likely due to the band […]

  • The Resource Miracle May 22, 2012
[Note: This essay appeared in the May 28, 2012, edition of TIME magazine.] It's become the go-to cliché of modern economics. Natural resources are a "curse." When a nation is over-reliant on one or two commodities like oil or precious minerals, corrupt government ministers and their dodgy associates hoard profits and taxes instead of properly […]
