U2 treat Toronto to a Pop-selection

Boom. Cha. While we await full reports from our troops on the ground, we’re going to tease you with this short and simple statement: They played Discotheque!

Set: City of Blinding Lights / Vertigo / Elevation / Electric Co. / The Ocean / Beautiful Day / Miracle Drug / Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own / Love and Peace or Else / Sunday Bloody Sunday / Bullet the Blue Sky / Miss Sarajevo / Pride / Where the Streets Have No Name / One / Discotheque / The Fly / With or Without You / All Because of You / Fast Cars / Yahweh / 40

Daniel Lanois plays guitar on One, Eddie Vedder joins them near the end for a few bars of Ol’ man river. The ‘Pop Muzik’ intro starts the encore and the screen shows PopMart imagery.

2 Down, 2 To Go in T.O.

The belly dancer makes a return in Toronto as does Daniel Lanois’ joining in on ‘Bad’ – not sure what the connection is there. The ‘new’ songs (Fast Cars, In a Little While) that were played at the first Toronto concert are dropped and it looks like a return to the standard Vertigo setlist.

Will U2 be in an experimental mood for the 3rd concert – or wait until the 4th show to relax and let loose?

Bono and the Edge appear on Late Late Show

The Edge and Bono both appeared on RTE’s Late Late Show’s Tribute to Jim Sheridan presented by Pat Kenny on Friday evening.

Bono revealed the band had been working in London on using string sections for three on three tracks but had to bin it because ‘the songs were crap’. The Edge said they would have to start from scratch to rework them. (quotes paraphrased from memory)

After being interviewed by Kenny, they were joined by Daniel Lanois to perform Falling at your feet.

Earlier in the day, Bono appeared on ArtZone on Lyric FM, RTE, in a taped interview (windows media) in which he talks very briefly about Peter and the Wolf and the sadness involved in drawing the pictures. There’s also an interview at USA Today. Check the right hand column for an additional real audio excerpt.

Chris Thomas to produce new U2 album?

Daniel Lanois is interviewed in Hot Press Magazine (reg. req.). Asked whether he is working on the new U2 album, he says:

“No, I’m not. I just saw Paul McGuinness a couple of nights ago. They’re in the studio with Chris Thomas (Roxy Music, Sex Pistols, Pretenders). I spoke with Bono about it, he said ‘Well, we decided to go old school’ and obviously I’m not available ‘cos I’m working on my record.”

Chris Thomas produced classic albums such as Roxy Music’s For Your Pleasure, the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind The Bollocks, INXS’s Listen Like Thieves and Pulp’s Different Class.

    The Soul Miner

…He’s dressed all in black, his thinning hair covered with a watch cap that he never takes off.

No, it’s not a description of The Edge. It’s one of Canadian son Daniel Lanois, who is interviewed in the current issue of Maclean’s. In the interview, Lanois describes his method of recording and producing music, which he calls “soul-mining,” and comments on working with the Dublin Four.

    • The Resource Miracle May 22, 2012
[Note: This essay appeared in the May 28, 2012, edition of TIME magazine.] It's become the go-to cliché of modern economics. Natural resources are a "curse." When a nation is over-reliant on one or two commodities like oil or precious minerals, corrupt government ministers and their dodgy associates hoard profits and taxes instead of properly […]

Bono made an appearance via video tonight at the Webby Awards, contributing to a tribute to Steve Jobs.
