Bono tells U2log.com: “It’s a lot of bowls, really.”

Imagine a cold London night. See The Edge hovering near Bono’s shoulder. Spot the ‘talented mates’ Guggi and Gavin sitting down in the gutter, sipping champagne. Elsewhere, watch Paul McGuinness opening the boot of his car, pulling out a black bag to treat Howie B to a copy of U2′s new album…

U2log.com co-founder Ben Hopkinson talks to Bono at the Osborne Samuel gallery in London on Wednesday night:

Ben: “You made a speech about Guggi’s paintings tonight, can you give us a quote?”

Bono: “It’s a lot of bowls, really…” (laughs)

Ben: “You must be proud to have so many talented mates.”

Bono: “I don’t really understand, you know, what was going on with the water on Cedarwood Road. But I think the three of us, Gavin Friday, myself and Guggi, all had… interesting fathers. I think that was something to do with it — I guess, something to rebel against. Something I hope not to offer my daughter…” (laughs)

So there we have it. Dublin water and Irish fathers are to blame for the unholy trinity, Messrs Friday, Gugs and Bono. Let’s drink to that.

Album review: U2′s Ultimate Ticking Bomb

the album, dvd and sleeve
U2’s new album got a warm reception from the U2log.com team from the moment we downloaded the first mp3 rip off Usenet. Now that we’ve forked over dollars and euro for every single available format out there, it’s time to have a closer look.

Patrick Lynch, Chris Conroy and Caroline van Oosten de Boer review How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb:

Edge Expects New U2 Album to Sell At Least 20 Units

Last week U2log asked our friend Derek McAllister to check in on the “In the Time of Shaking” exhibition opening at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, where Edge introduced Yoko Ono to a gallery filled with socialites and media. Asked if he was happy with the new album to date, Edge told Derek, “It’s not just the finished article. But so far I think we will sell over 20 units of the album because the four of us are happy, the team in happy, the manager is happy, and some of our kids seem happy with the tunes on the new album.”

MP3 magazine get their facts straight

Straight from lalaland, that is. This month’s magazine (the dead trees version) reviews U2 sites and this is what they write about us:

If it’s U2 news and gossip you’re after, then U2log is an essential destination. Run by a team eagle-eyed fans in Holland, the UK and the USA, the site is updated two or three times a day with the latest rumours and information. There are quotes from newspapers, reprinted articles and links to the best U2 content on the web (the band even let them upload a couple of tracks from the new album). A simple site, but well worth visiting.
***

1. We’re mainly from Holland/Australia/Ireland. None of our editors are from the UK.
2. We do not reprint articles. We write our own material. This is in fact the strength of U2log.com
3. We were never given permission by the band to upload their material. Please believe us when we tell you everything we do is WRONG and we’ll go straight to hell for it.
4. Simple? Yeah, we k.i.s.s. you.

But we’re well worth visiting. They got that right.

As a reminder, the survey was open from April 5th through April 30th. We received completed responses from 3,530 fans in 79 countries this year, both of which are down from 2010. We think that's likely due to the band […]

  • The Resource Miracle May 22, 2012
[Note: This essay appeared in the May 28, 2012, edition of TIME magazine.] It's become the go-to cliché of modern economics. Natural resources are a "curse." When a nation is over-reliant on one or two commodities like oil or precious minerals, corrupt government ministers and their dodgy associates hoard profits and taxes instead of properly […]
  • Bono Pays One More Tribute to Steve Jobs May 22, 2012
Bono made an appearance via video tonight at the Webby Awards, contributing to a tribute to Steve Jobs. A host of tech legends and celebrities each paid tribute to Jobs in five words or less, a Webby Awards tradition. It looks like Bono’s contribution was recorded within the past week, but that’s just a guess. [...]This is a post from the @U2 blog.Bono Pays […]
