SEVEN TOWERS STILL STAND ‘I

‘I see seven towers, but I only see one way out’ from U2’s Running to Stand Still refers to the Ballymun flats in Dublin. Built in the 70s, they were once a symbol of progress (‘we’re going to be like America’), but they rapidly gained notoriety for bad living circumstances, (drugs related) crime and decay. RTE news today reports on the planned demolition of the site, to replace them with mixed housing. This Friday evening, all work came to a halt due to ‘complex issues’ involving safety.
