A Little Soul In The Bowl

U2’s Super Bowl performance is now complete — “Beautiful Day,” a bit of “MLK” and “Where The Streets Have No Name” on a stadium-sized heart-stage. Highlights include a Popmart-style Bono through-the-crowd entrance, thousands of red glowsticks, and the names of the Sept. 11th victims on a cloth screen through “MLK” and “…Streets…” (a bit of an awkward combo on that last one, but we’ll keep quiet.) Watch this space for the inevitable MP3/RealAudio/video files which should be cropping up on the ‘net riiight aboouuuutt… now. (Update @ 10:51 PM ET: U2outloud.com have done the MP3 deed; thank you, MAgU2k). And hey, aren’t you glad we got five minutes of awkward mugging with Paul McCartney instead of another U2 tune?

  1. So, U2 plays halftime and my worse fears were realized. Poor camera crew/director in a difficult film shoot making the band look awful. The only shots that came off interesting were the pullaway shot in BD (that’s been a staple of U2 television appearances) and the names of victimes along a Super Bowl-sized screen. Oh, well, I just hope this doesn’t get them snubbed at the Grammy’s.

  3. if you ask me it was the best superbowl halftime show i have ever seen, yes i am biased because i am a u2 fan, but gimme a break they did NOT lip sync, bono wouldnt say ” we arent going to lip sync ” and then go ahead and do it. the guy has class

  5. U2 WAS GREAT AS USUAL BUT WHAT’S UP WITH ONLY 2 SONGS?! IT WAS ALL OVER THE NET THAT THEY WERE PLAYING 3 SONGS, WHAT HAPPENED?

  7. TECHNICALLY, they did play 3 songs. BD & MLK as a lead in to WTSHNN. It just turns out that MLK is butt short. I would’ve LIKED the set list to have been BD, Elevation, & Walk On. Personally, it would’ve been in _their_ best interest to play at least one of the three Grammy noms. Ah well….. =p

JUST A PERSONAL OPINION —> Bono has REALLY got get his act together. He’s pulling himself in 1,000,001 directions that his voice sounded like s**t tonight, compared to this time last year. He needs a break. He needs to chill on the excessive, voice destroying crap.

I loved the `Bowl performance, because I love U2, but this was nearly as half-hearted as the 1997 MTV “Please”. A good performance, but nowhere near their best IMHO.

Rest Bono. Sleep. Stop talking for a while. Then head back to the studio. We love ya’. We don’t want you to sound like Springsteen on the next U2 disc. =)

  9. BTW Peace01…. I’ve been listening to the MP3s. ….. Not including the intro video, they used up 11:03 of their alloted 12 minutes (give or take). Adding in a anything longer than MLK would’ve put them well over the limit. BTW2—-> Don’t freak just because I critiqued Bono’s usually kickbutt voice. He just sounded really tired and a little off of his game. ….. Like the Rams. >=p …. j/k

  11. Pretty good performance, if you ask me. At least they didn’t pull up a bunch of teeny boppers like last year’s “legendary rockers” did.

I don’t think Streets really fit in with the 9/11 names scrolling, and I’m sure there will be more than a few people complaining about them dropping the screen before all the names had scrolled all the way through. Oh well.. 9/11 was definitely the theme for the night.. Guess they had to chiime in some how.

I’m a little suprised that they played Streets after they played it for the NBA finals. Sports fans are going to think they only have one hit. 🙂

Too bad this couldn’t have been a real U2 concert.. Lot’s of fun could have been had with former Pres. Bush in the audience. 🙂

  13. Bono’s voice did sound a bit off, but look on the bright side of the road, maybe its from hours in the recording studio. The big mystery to me was how they built the stage in 5 minutes.

  15. 5 minutes? Try less. Most of that stage went up faster than Marlon Brando to a buffet. It was blindingly fast. The equipment setup took longer than anything else. ………… Hoarse from recording music? Hmmmmm…. Interesting theory. =) Hopefully they’re started recording some non-movie related tracks, prefereably album 11 stuff. ………… I agree that Streets was a questionable choice. It certainly has that stadium power, but Stuck or Walk On really fit the 9/11 profile better. ………… I guess they were trying to appeal to new fans w/BD , old fans with WTSHNN, and hardcore fans with MLK. ………… ………… ………… Now, WHERE’S THE NEW STUFF? =) [Hey, it HAS been a year and a half already. They’re gonna have to pony up sooner or later. LOL]

  17. I thought the performance was excellent, but Bonos voice sounded really really off. I thought MLK was a nice suprise touch, and Bono my friend rest your voice. I want to hear that beautiful voice for three or four more records.

  19. Knowing U2, they probably did the BD-MLK-WTSHNN combo deliberately to throw over-expectant fans off. U2 isn’t the kind of band who likes to stay predictable. And if their choice of songs jeopardise their grammy chances, too bad – awards don’t matter to the greatest band on earth.

  21. Awesome performance…although, I think the MLK-Streets combo would have sounded better with the full organ intro to Streets. Perfect way to mix old and new considering them playing “Walk On” in every T.V. appearance was beginning to wear. “Streets” was perfect with the names scrolling down…the ultimate goal is peace, and that unity is much more important than winning (in life, not football).

  23. I was not that impressed w/ the 1/2 time show. Bono’s voice was IMO, terrible. I did like the nod to MLK–wished they’d done the whole thing-it would’ve been very appropriate with all the 9/11 names scrolling. I had said some time ago that U2 can’t get overexposed. Well, I think they did it to themselves with a less than best performance. Time for a rest boys. Go back to the studio. We’re waiting for the next album.

  25. What was Bono praying before “Streets?” I would love you all to listen and post your versions of the transcript. Was it a Psalm or what?

  27. Has anyone found the clip of McCartney with Bradshaw available on the web? (I was playing “Walk On” from my ATYCLB CD over them and missed the goofiness!)

  29. Thought Halftime was ossom, BONO and the boys looked well rested and sounded amazing. A little disappointed that it was only 2 songs, they definitely could of scrapped the McCartney bit and added an additional song.

  31. Now that I think of it Bono’s voice probably wasn’t hoarse from recording it was probably from talking to all those politicians and Bill Gates.

  33. I wasn’t impressed with the performance. Granted, I rarely think U2 come off well in these TV type promotional performances. Other than being a pretty standard performance, Bono’s voice was in bad form. I guess that he was talking up quite a storm in NYC which weakened considerably his fragile vocal cords.
Despite all the good work that Bono does, it pains me to see the group suffer from it – even if many people don’t even realize it.

  35. It was a hell of alot more respectable to see them instead of N’suck!!! Granted MLK was an awesome choice of a song to throw in, it sounded like Bono wasn’t ready to start on cue, or he had a lugi on that first note, other than that I thought everybody was on… For those of you who don’t live in America, I would like to say that I at least am disgusted by people trying to capatilize on the attacks of the 11th, and it seemed to me like the other parts of the superbowl (like the embarrassing sports stars’ salutes to Police and Firefighters) were done because it’s almost fashionable, not from the heart… I was truly touched by U2’s salute to the dead and their call to heal, move on, and make the world better post-Sept 11th, I don’t care what anybody thinks, I think they were the only ones to do something mentioning the 11th that didn’t seem forced, and once again I am proud to be a U2 fan!!!

  37. Verdanmmte Heuchler. It was never more obvious that U2 instrumentalises events like the bloody sunday, Sarajevo, 3rd world debt only for THEIR own purposes. Mainstreaming alsongside with US patrotism makes me sick.
It’s only about the US music market. Anything about the on going war on Afghansitan? No, they don’t buy records over there! However, one US life equals 100 Afghans.

  39. Ralf, that’s pretty low to say. If anyone is a Heuchler, it is you. First you use a german word so most ppl won’t understand you and then you talk about something you don’t know. You just don’t seem to wanna know that some ppl DO care!!! and don’t give a f%ck about money. You really think they recorded Sunday Bloody Sunday for the money …

  43. I might be stupid, indeed.
However, I don’t use a tradegy like the 11.09. for my own business or artistic benefit.
Neither I did this with the war in Yugoslavia.
Technically spoken Mohammed Atta was the first dead on the 11th, was he on the list of U2?
If U2 would use the name of one of my (dead) relatives , I would sue them.
Bono came here to play Jesus and the Lepra has reached his head years ago.
    Keep on waving the flag.
It used to be a white one (1983)
Now it’s the stars and stripes.
That was burned by U2 on the concert at the Loreley 1983.
    Things change.
Anything about the starving people of Iraq, Mr. Bono? I don’t say you should care for everything bad in the world, but be careful who’s side you’re on.

  45. Thanks for backing me up everyone, and as for the terrorists themselves, no they do not deserve to have their name up on the screen with the innocent people they killed, and they can burn in hell or wherever they are going, I don’t give a shit about them, they are sub-human!!! Yes, America is where most of the albums bought in the world are sold and yes they are paying tribute to something that happened in America… I know alot more about other parts of the world because U2 tried to educate me about it… Does anyone think they are trying to capatilize on the debt owed to lots of governments by poor african countries, or use their fame to educate the masses here in America, and in Europe… I don’t think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out it is the second option there, and I commend U2 for that… If you don’t like U2, go listen to somebody else who doesn’t give a shit about the world, but leave my band alone, I like that they are trying to bring the world together and make it a better place no matter what their critics say!!! They are the best band in the world, period!!!

  47. You keep bullshitting on about how U2 are singing these songs for their own benefit…how exactly do they benefit? Sure, they get paid but they’d get paid the same if they sung Happy Birthday OR Sunday Bloody Sunday or whatever you have a problem with. There’s no big conspiracy, just a quest for peace, that’s all. For those of you who know, no explanation is needed…for those of you who don’t know, no explanation will suffice.

  49. Wise words Anon 🙂
    And they’re all true.

But there’s one thing that did bother me a little, being a European and that is indeed waving the American flag. That’s not very neutral and in my opinion they have become a little USA minded.
