Salute Or Sell-Out?

We’ve heard the “S-O” word a lot in the current Internet discourse about U2 in the wake of the Super Bowl. We’d hoped this Entertainment Weekly piece would provide a meaty statement of intent, but while it is a nice piece of personal music writing, it comes to a wishy-washy conclusion (the reader feedback is priceless, however). We’ve already heard most of your views in this site’s various comment sections, but if you’ve got links to other online debates on the matter, we’d love to see ’em in this thread… (and let’s keep it civil, please.)

  1. I always hate when people say so and so sold out. The minute they sign a record contract they sold out! Get over it!

  3. Did some people said they sold out when POP came out? When ATYCLB came out they are welcomed and now they did the super bowl and they sold out?

  5. Even U2 can’t please everyone – though God knows they try. The minute I see the Edge singing in a Burger Kind ad, only then will I hastily confim sell-out status!

  7. I’m with you, Karen. As long as they’re not out hawking goods (like Sting did with Jaguar & Compaq), they haven’t sold out in my book. It is still all about the music, and they’ve recently made some of the best music of their career, so ROCK ON!

  9. Yeah they sold out, I mean they did fill those seats at the superbowl and at other concerts didn’t they? That’s the only selling out they ever did.
