We’d held off on mentioning that this was going down, mainly because it smacks a bit of Hollywood self-congratulation, but Bono was celebrated last night at the 1st annual “Love Rocks” tribute show, designed to recognize the outstanding philanthropic contributions of popular entertainers. R.E.M., No Doubt, Lauryn Hill, Tom Cruise, Kevin Spacey, Bill Clinton (via videotape) and others all turned up to kiss Bono’s… err… hand, and R.E.M. performed a cover of “I Got You Babe” with — and we are not making this up — Cher herself. It marks the first time Cher has performed the song since the death of her ex-husband Sonny Bono (please, please let that just be a coincidence. If that was their idea of a pun, we will shoot ourselves) several years ago. We shall now respectfully restrain ourselves from commenting further. But that doesn’t mean you can’t. kissing ass or not, with REM doing a cover of “One” with Bono on vocals, it had to be a special night. Anyone in the audience remember to grab their minidisk before heading out the door?
