Songs can sometimes be an accident waiting to happen. Daniel Lanois talks to The Star: “On the last U2 album, we’d just about finished one whole piece, when The Edge started blazing away on his guitar, making a sound like shattering metal, while Bono was ad-libbing over the end section of the song. Suddenly, Bono shouted out, `It’s a beautiful day!’ and in an instant, a minor fragment of improvisation at the back end of one song became something much bigger and more important, more emotionally powerful than what had gone before. We dumped the original song, built another one around that fragment, and re-cut it. And `Beautiful Day’ became an anthem.”

I’m guessing the song they trashed was always? Anyone know when Daniel Lanois next solo album is due out?

I dont know why they trashed always from the album, personally i love the song. I think your right though it does sound like beautiful day came from it.

The song ‘always’ has the exact same musical sound as ‘beautiful day’ (except for minor arrangements). There is no question that this was the original version. Just listen to it.

Oh please, EVERYBODY knows Always evolved into Beautiful Day, it’s pointless to mention it. Also, if you are completely convinced, just check the Anton Corbjin video of Beautiful Day, when they look to the board where they marked the progression of songs, and you can read “Beautiful day (Always)”. oh yeah, Oasis and U2 shouldn’t tour Europe

Danny’s official site (daniellanois.com) doesn’t give a release date for the new album; I figure it’s too early the production process, and it’s not like he’s under a great deal of pressure to follow a schedule. So, I hear you ask, what do we do while we wait? SIMPLE. Find his two earlier albums. 🙂

what was the song Bono was singing in his car on a rerun of that 60 minutes II piece on him? It could have evolved into Kite, but it sounded better actually.
