U Spin Me

U2 are #4 in this year’s Spin Magazine Top 40 Most Vital Artists list, up several spots from last year. You can read their blurb about the band — with a new quote from Bono, and we know you love those — at the magazine’s website. (Thanks to Ross)

  1. Great Googly Moogly! I _DID_ miss that part. Holy Hannah! Here’s hoping that it’s not a misprint or some poorly reference to something else.

  3. This list is very retarted. First of all, U2 should be #1. Secondly, I am now more than convinced that there are several love affairs going on between SPIN’s editors & the members of Radiohead (“…apologies to Radiohead;” none needed, you stupid assholes.) God, does SPIN ever suck so badly. They need to be destroyed. Now.

  5. I agree about U2 being #1. At the very least, it should’ve replaced Radiohead. Radiohead had a very interesting challenge ahead of them after the excellent Kid A. The f-ed it up. They’re neither socially nore musically vital.

  7. Isn’t there some sort of history between Spin and U2? I remember back when Achtung was out, and Zoo-TV was a force to be reckoned with. Spin had hardly anything to say about U2, and what little they did say was of the anti U2, backlash variety. Spin were champions of “Authentic” grunge back then, and opposed to the “slick” “corporate rock” of U2. I seem to recall hearing rumors when I was in college about some grievance the editor Guccioni Jr. had with the band on a personal level. Was there anything to those stories? Does anyone know? I do know that compared to the crass attitude Spin used to take towards U2 (never mind the Onion! Spin used to be the real enemy) they have taken on a completely different approach since ATYCLB. Still, they do seem to drag their feet just a little sometimes. How is it, for example, the band they themselves named “Band of the Year” are Number four…. behind another Band!!! What? Are Radiohead the Bandier Band of the year? The Bandiest Band? Never been a big Spin fan. I think they completely missed the boat on Achtung Baby, and I don’t have a lot of respect for their pompous preach attitude when they were too shallow to appreciate one of the depest albums, concerts, hell, pop cultural events to hit the world they cover.
