No Propaganda

U2’s official fan magazine ‘Propaganda‘ are ‘not taking any new Propaganda orders per U2’s request’. Fans were informed of this by staff at the magazine’s HQ. We were also informed that U2.com no longer link to the Propaganda website… which could mean anything or nothing at all.

[ update ] Youtwo.net have the scoop: YouTwo.net has learned that the next issue of Propaganda, which is scheduled to be mailed within the next few weeks, will be the last issue of the fan club magazine. A source at dSIDE, the Irish magazine that has been producing Propaganda for the past two years, has confirmed the next
issue will be a “big, final farewell issue.”.

The band are to continue their fanclub services via their website at U2.com.

  1. This sounds bad. Could this actually be the first sign of that rumored breakup? I sure as heck hope not

  3. During the Elevation tour, Propaganda’s membership soared with new members that were joining for the chance of pre-ordering prime tickets. Propaganda, as a result, had extreme difficulties filling those ticket requests, not to mention fending off the ire of members demanding that their ticket requests be fulfilled.

Propaganda will be opened up for membership again as subscriptions die off and it becomes less of a 10-headed-monster.

Of course, this is all just speculation on my part. For all I know, the band could be breaking up as we speak. At which time, Larry will dissolve into a pile of dust.

  5. Y’know besides the nice ticket offers and the occasional freebie (nice but not often enough), Prop has been pretty crap for the $, and it’s been fairly obvious…I say it’s some revamping or a change in vision and nothing ominous.

  7. I think the band is just stressed…awards shows also make demands on the winners, and with Bono’s attention on two different areas (I speak with admiration I can assure you), it must be a great stress on all.
The link to Propaganda being cut might only be a way to lessen interest in membership. I am sure Propaganda is also stressed with the numbers of new memberships. I am going to remain optimistic….(Please dear God)
The whole thing stresses me. 🙁

  9. Aren’t we reading a bit much into this? I tend to agree with the person who said that Propaganda was getting out of hand with new membership, etc. and needed to be revamped or done away with altogether. I seriously doubt a breakup is in the future, but if it is, so be it. They’ve given us 20+ years of their lives, and if they want them back for themselves, I can understand. But I still think that’s a long ways away…they’re on a roll and they know enough not to let that get away.

  11. i hope they send me the remaining 2 issues they owe me. i too got screwed out of tickets on the last leg of the tour. i don’t understand how a SURGE in membership can scare them into downsizing. seems to me that a surge means more money, so just hire some more people. i know i would jump at the chance to work for U2, no matter how distant that connection may be.

  13. I agree that this whole rumor thing is spreading out of control. I just find it a bit ominous that First the tour gets cancelled, then a rumor (based on another 1994 rumor) pops up, and finally the fan mag Prop stops taking subscriptions….. at U2’s request. ?!?! …….. Admittedly, it’s probably all coincidental, but for a second, it felt like the 4th horseman of the apocalyse. =) ……. Why would they break up anyway? Great album. Great tour. A sh*tload of awards. That’d be like….. well, that’d be stupid. LOL

  15. Kurt Cobain & Jimi Hendrix maybe, but they croaked to early to f-up. In the TV world there are examples, but that’s a different sitch. ……….. Screw it. Let them fight all they want. Maybe it’ll clear the air and result in an even better album. ………. I think that we’re all just afraid that they’re really “the last of the rock stars”. Sometimes life imitates art.

  17. You guys need help. Stop worrying about every minor change. This does not mean they will break up, and it’s not the end of the world. Get it together!

  21. I can’t believe the way people are panicking over this stuff. Yes, there is always the possibility that the band might call it a day (which is too horrible to think about), but has anything really happened to suggest that’s in the near future?! The tour “cancellation” was surprising, but it was never officially announced in the first place – just the fans being too quick off the mark as usual. The quotes from Larry about Bono’s political activity are not new, and probably not that big a deal. Propaganda stops taking on new subscribers… so what?? There’s been no evidence of the band falling out with each other, or anything like that which would seriously suggest that there could be internal problems. They are probably just having a break after the long tour, or getting on with the new album instead… I don’t understand why everyone is freaking out so badly.

  23. (Cue grumpy Yorkshireman voice): Tired? TIRED? Me old dad never ‘ad a day off in 50 years and ‘e never earned in is lifetime wot them Bono boys earn in a day. BUT REALLY – why lose momentum? I reckon a double album is in order; one side rocking, one side chilled. Then a few more dates in anywhere but the USA (Africa, Asia and Australasia, perhaps?) and then end whilst they’re on top, I reckon.

  25. I think the boys are due for several more albums anyway, right? Didn’t they sign a 10 album/$100mil deal just a few years ago? I think it was just before POP so that would be #1, Best Of would be #2, AYCLB #3.
Contracts aside, I think we have a lot more of U2 to see before they knock it on the head. It has been a long year for the band with 100+ tour dates in Europe and the USA and Bono’s Dad passing, his new bouncing baby boy, a high profile tour in America during uncertain times (post 9/11), Bono doing debt relief proposals, etc, etc, etc. That’s a lot of sh*t to deal with in a year so maybe they are going to rest and let a little air out of the balloon for a while, but that’s cool (and needed as well).

  27. Plus Bono just had a meeting with Gorby and Clinton (again), and is back at the US Capitol today – i’m half tempted to stop by. Throw on top the two award ceremonies from last week and the new music we’re hearing rumors about…..

  29. I’d rather them take a break than get burned from going just too long… Too bad no more propaganda, but we still get to see a lot of the boys in magazines and books also… Isn’t the Best Of 1991-2001 coming out this fall??? We all should realize that probably awards aren’t a big deal to them, U2 is their life’s work, it will take something besides a stellar year to make them decide it’s time to quit; and even if they did, it’s not like they won’t do stuff!!!

  31. From the Propaganda FAQ: “What do I get when I subscribe? You are guaranteed to receive four (4) issues of Propaganda. Also, in the past, there have been additional goodies such as a free extra issue, a double-issue, posters, a Lemon CD — Remixes for Propaganda, an Hasta La Vista Baby CD and offers to purchase U2 tickets to upcoming gigs. Please Note: There are “no guarantees” with regard to additional goodies.” I’ve only received 1 issue on my current subscription… Wonder if there will be some form of compensation? Not that I’d be overly pissed if there weren’t… I think I got my money’s worth just from fan club tickets. Sad to see it shutdown though.. The Propaganda people were really cool..

  33. Jay-sus, people! My breakup comment was a joke. Relax. And while everyone’s speculating, did anyone notice that U2 has a Web site now? New media is the big idea…and sadly the role of Propaganda is slipping away. I’ll mourn its loss…it’s always great to get an old-school fans-only pub. But it’s not 1985 any more.

  35. Well, although I am disappointed by this decision (I just became a member 3 months ago!), I’m guessing a lot of people didn’t actually read the whole youtwo.net article. If you did, you would find out that Propaganda would probably continue through a different medium (namely, internet mag.)…which would still allow people to obtain goodies and even ticket priviledges (provided they still keep track of paid memberships). I personally e-mailed them for an address change, and they responded as if things were still alright, but also mentioned to be registered to keep up on “breaking news” regarding Propaganda.

  37. I too got one issue, and didn’t even get concert tickets through Propaganda. I’m sure they’ll be happy to take my $20. What bullshit. The one issue I got was full of stuff I already knew anyway, just by reading sites like this. I guess I learned my lesson. Letdown.
