It is with great sadness that we must announce the passing of our friend Pimm Jal de la Parra, author of “U2 Live A Concert Documentary“, “David Bowie – The Concert Tapes”, and founder-editor of U2 magazine “Collectormania”.
Pimm Jal was known and respected in U2 and Bowie fan communities world wide. He loved people. People loved him. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with his family and friends.

I am thoroughly shocked and saddened. Pimm’s book was one of the few worthy of the band. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

I’m kind of without words, but I’d like to add that besides his wonderful book and the hard work he put into it, he was a lovely person. He’d talk enthousiastically and very passionatly about a lot of issues. He’s friendly and warm. Don’t know if he believed in angels, but if he did, he sleeps with them tonight. Ik zal je missen.

I would like to thank Pimm and share my admiration for him. I grew reading all the U2 books I could get my hands on and his is wonderful. He got to live out a dream of mine….to follow the greatest band of all time and document the live experiences that make music worthwhile.

I never met Pimm. I wish I had. All I know of Pimm is the picture of him left by his book: that of a dedicated, passionate, and hard-working man and fan. I have read his U2 and David Bowie books. I thought he was the coolest to be not much older than me, and know so damn much about 2 of my favorite artists. In fact, the first time I went to Holland, I sent a postcard to him while in Amsterdam with the hostel I was staying at as a return address. I never got a reply or anything, and I possibly didn’t have the right address for him at the time. It would have been nice to have met the guy. I think it’s a damn shame that he is no longer among us. Cheers Pimm!

The Concert Documentary book is an incredible piece of work. Many times I have though that as a child I may have been standing on some street corner and a few buldings away U2 could have been soundchecking for a gig and I would have not even known the band existed. It’s funny how time can provoke such thoughts. Thanks Pimm.

We’re shocked when we heard from a close friend of Pimm that he’s no longer with us. I knew him for years, but not personal, but I knew he was a special person and we really admirred his work. The concert documentary is used almost dayly by us. A few months back we came personally in touch with Pimm and started to help him accomplishing an updated book of the U2 concert documentary. He was very grateful and it was a great pleasure to “work” for him. We will miss him a lot.
We want to give all his family and friends strength and love in this difficult time and terrible loss of a great person…

I’m sorry to hear about this man’s passing. I’ve seen some of his pictures of U2 and they were some of the greatest pictures of the band I ever saw. He had such great insight of the band and knew how to capture it. My prayers are with his family and all associated with U2 – including the fans.

I only ever read the U2 book, but it changed my life. From being an ordinary fan, this encyclopedia continually amazed me by the scale of the writer’s obvious love for the band, the history of the band, and brought me to a new level – not of devotion, but of understanding.

I remember the first Collectormania I picked up was in 1985. In a era where mass media hadn’t hit,(Interent, etc) it was the only way next to Propaganda to hear about U2. His contribution to U2 fandom was huge. Being a U2 fan will not be the same.

Collectormania was one of my favorite U2 magazines…I was lucky enough to find 3 of them on the stands (I looked for it everytime I went to Tower, even though it was sometimes years between issues). Pimm was also nice enought to credit me in his concert documentary book for a review I sent in for a Zoo Tv show I went to in 1992.

I just wanted to post a quick note of thanks in honor of Pimm Jal. His book, U2: A Concert Documentary made my Masters Thesis much easier to write and defend. He put a lot of care into that book and provided some provocative insights.

I’m immensely shocked and sad by the terrible news. I’ve been lucky enough to meet Pimm several times over the last few years, he’s always been a source of inspiration to me. I discover the Collectormania fanzine in 1992 and was immediately impressed by its contents. My heart, it aches for Pimm’s loved ones left behind. For Pimm though, I am not sad. I choose to think of him now relishing his angel-eye view of every U2 concert, jam, and studio session…all of it, forevermore.

What a sad news. I loved the Collectormania magazine very much. It was with deep sadness that I learned of Pimm’s death. His book, “U2 Live, A Concert Documentary”, has fueled the fire for my U2 collecting over many years and has brought me immense joy. Pimm, you will be missed and may you forever walk on with God.

I’ve heard it said that God takes those whom He loves when they are young, as in His love He would spare them any more of the world’s pain. Though the world for Pimm must have been a wonderful place, because so many loved him, and will always love him. He must have been a truly extrordinary man to affect so many this way.
I never met him, or emailed him, but I love his work. And I am really surprised at the depth of my own reaction. I will never forget the day in the spring of 1995 that I discovered an issue of Collectormania on the stands at a local bookstore, and that directly and immediately inspired me to take my first trip to Dublin (though I had been a fan since the early 80’s, and knew Propaganda for years, before then, I hadn’t cared to go.)

My beloved, battered Concert Documentary has an honored place on my shelf, (along with a printout of the ’96 Irish Peace Accord, and John Waters’ “Race of Angels”)–and now it will never leave.

I bought your book “David Bowie, the concert tapes” and then we meet eachother. When reading this book i thought..this guy is really up to date and i got also fanatic.We had the same plan..
1987…Touring through Europe with you for David Bowie’s Glass Spider Tour was a great joy and pleasure. In the ice cream parlour…Q Pimm: how many balls? A from Waiter: WHAT??? Also I remember your compession for U2 and the urge to ‘build’ a great U2 magazine. You succeeded! Surrely you are one of the great U2 fans whith a great contribution to collectors/fans and whole U2.
I’m sorry that since 1998 we haven’t spoke to each other(elkaar uit het oog verloren).

The first time I met PJ was at the end of U2 concert in London in a cold and rainy night. I was happy and glad to know him. We met sometimes during the years and I will never forget his smile and his kindness. I’m very sorry that I didn’t have time to see him more often but he will be forever in my heart. Long before I had the internet (let alone seeing U2 live), Pimm’s book was one of my few resources for information. I was truely amazed how many shows this guy had been to and when I wrote to him I was even more suprised he wrote back with lots of freebies and a message of hope that I to one day would also see them live. I couldn’t believe how generous he was and we wrote to each other a few times. So it came as a great shock to read about his passing, I was hoping that my eyes were deceiving me but that was not to be. RIP Pimm.

I think it’s been expressed far better by most of the previous people,but the Bowie concert tapes book was a fantastic book to find in the days before I had internet access,of all the Bowie books I have,this is the one that still gets checked out at least once a week to check up on something or other,hard to believe this sad new,thanks for the great book,God bless.

i remember i got the book, U2 live a concert doc. for this past Christmas. i opened it and didnt put it down for a while. i didnt even care about the rest of my gifts at the time. it was so beautiful how perfect it was. i remember my mom kinda wanting me to put it down, and open more gifts. i was like, in a daze. i studied the early years the most. how young and raw the band was. those old pics are the best. young bono is such an inspiration for me. im 19 and striving to become a great frontman. peace PJ. may your family and friends have strength.

It’s because of Pimm’s selfless work that I was able to become a full fledged, die hard U2 fan in 1995 but still become familiar with all that I had missed. From the moment I flipped open Pimm’s book, I knew that U2 were going to be a big part of my life, and I thank him for dedicating his time to bringing the music he loved to others. I think his work was probably the most comprehensive ever done for any artist, and thank god we’ve all been blessed with his contributions.
It’s because of Pimm’s selfless work that I was able to become a full fledged, die hard U2 fan in 1995 but still become familiar with all that I had missed. I was just surfing the site and read the news!
I corresponded with Pimm a few times in ref to his magazine,and i always got a very articulte reply,he seemed to be a very humble guy,well thats what came across in his letters.
I just wish i could have had a face to face chat….

I corresponded with Pimm a few times in ref to his magazine,and i always got a very articulte reply,he seemed to be a very humble guy,well thats what came across in his letters.
I just wish i could have had a face to face chat….
I hope that someone will carry on his good work with the magazine and the books….

I met Pimm a couple of times on the Zoo TV tour, I remember that he told me he was writing a book that would log all the U2 gigs since they started. I thought at the time that it would be an impossible task, well I’m very pleased to say that he proved me wrong.Pimm’s book will stand forever as a testimony to his dedication, and will continue to be the most widely used reference point on U2 concerts for fans around the world for years to come.

Pimm, I was one of the thousands of people with whom you crossed your path. As with so many, we met during Bowie’s Glass Spider tour. On hearing you were also a big U2-fan, I remember having made the enormous insult to qualify U2 by that time as ‘a hype’. I know now how mistaken I was.
Ten years after we meet accidentally in cafe Eik & Linde. You were selling newspapers. I guess everybody has run into Pimm a second time.
As strange as it was to see your kind face suddenly framed in black, I can feel also comfort with your passing away. It shows me how wonderful people dedicating their lives to a dream will not fade away. I will not forget that warm smile of yours.

Gees, PJ, I dunno what to say… I’m really sorry we lost touch. Those days were the best I ever had. Life is wierd. Just when you think it’s ok, someone goes and changes the channel. I’ll never forget lumping boxes of Collectormania flyers from concert to concert, I’ll never forget how you taped the rip in your jeans, I’ll never forget me throwing up in your local pub (sorry!), I’ll never forget “zuschlag” on the train. I’ll never forget getting lost in Paris, and then getting ripped off for an expensive coffee in a cafe. I’ve already forgotten the dumb arguement with Guido (how could I have been so self-centered). I’ll never forget Bimbo bread in Barcelona. I’ll never forget the after-tour party in 92, I got the tape to prove it!! Remember (my name is) Luca, Carlos, Angelika, Stefano, Karin and her carots, Jurgen, cvb, AJ… all the floors we slept on, all the fans, hanging out in dubious places way after dark, freezing our butts off? I’d be the one sneeking into soundchecks and concerts, but you’d always buy your tickets. How decent is that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You were decent, and professional, and FUN! You deserved so much more. I really enjoyed your friendship, your generosity, your meals, your sense of humour, your dedication, your drive, your cups of tea. You got me adicted to stroopwaffles! Thanks for printing my photos, even tho they were really crap. Thanks for being a really cool person, thanks for liking U2, thanks for putting up with me. Thanks for the conversations. Thanks for taking me to see De Dijk. Thanks for the long letters, the tapes, the magazine, the books, even tho these diversions cost me some exams grades (who cares!). Thanks for meeting me at Schipol. Thanks for showing me around Amsterdam. Thanks for being great fun. Remember everyone booing at the Fatima Mansions? They were actually pretty good (after you heard them 10 times). Remember Christina the georgous belly dancer? She gave you her card! Remember the girls in Gothenburg? Remember Vienna? Remember Dublin, New Years Eve!!!!!! I don’t remember everything now but it was the best time eva! And I certainly didn’t remember the way back home – I’m still here in the northern hemisphere!! You know, I almost went before you… I’ve read through a lot of these messages. I think you made a difference. You DID make a difference! (Least of all, I’ve got you screaming on some of my concert tapes!!!). Hope you got satellite tv where you are now. Hope you’re ok now…………………………….

I only met Pimm once, at the shoot of “Labyrinth of Lust” directed by his father, Pim de la Parra. He was a very nice man. Garry

I’m so very sorry to hear of the sad news. Next to Propaganda, I think Collectormania was the best magazine about U2. I even handed out pamphlets at Zoo TV concerts for Collectormania. I never had the opportunity to meet him, but did admire his dedication to the greatest rock band ever. Now he will be able to ‘Dream out loud’ with the angels. From one ‘Until the End of the World’ die hard U2 fan to another, RIP Pimm.

It’s a shock! In spite of not having meet him since Lovetown and especially 92s ZooTV-Shows, I remember him as a so friendly and nice guy! I had deepest respect, for what he was doing! Thanks for havin’ me in Amsterdam! My deep sympathy to his family and friends, my deepest sympathy to you, Pimm Jal.

I think the hundreds of comments on this page say plenty about the legacy, and the devotion to U2 and David Bowie, of this man who puts all of us “die-hards” to shame. We’ll all miss him and cherish his work all the more

Bye,Pimm, sorry we didn’t meet eachother again when we were adults. We really had so much to talk and laugh about. I will always remember you as the eleven year old boy, who had the ambition to write a book about David Bowie. You did and so much more. Your soul has had an amazing experience of life on this earth

I am so lucky to have the book he wrote. I am only 21 and now i can catch up on all that i missed while i was too young to know much about good music. hardly a day goes by without opening it. i wouldn’t know which bootlegs to get if it wasn’t for Pimm Jal!I wish i could have bought him lunch to share our enthusiasm for the greatest band on the planet. 🙂

Wow, what a book! And what a great guy Pimm Jal must have been. I think it’s a true classic for every U2 fan. Got it as a b’day present from my sister a couple of years ago. He really deserves great respect for this masterpiece. My sympathy goes out to his family and friends and to everyone who was lucky enough to have met the guy.
