i can handle comments from people disagreeing with me, even angrily. what i (and my mail quota) CAN’T handle however is 100 emails saying things like “U R DUMB” and “U NEED TO GET LAID”. i appreciate what u2log was trying to do, and i’m glad they found it funny. i’m sorry i had to take it down, but the hit count was crazy and people were using the pictures from my site & taking bandwidth. thanks anyway, guys! 🙂

I can laugh with the people…I can laugh at myself. I laughed with U2 from zootv through to POP…but after POP I just couldn’t laugh about them anymore and I started crying. Because I feel noone should subject or be subjected to the kind of pressure that U2 are under as a band and as celebrities (i.e. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me).
I wish the best for U2 and the entire organization, family, etc. etc. ect.

What irked me about April’s comments was not the fact that April disliked U2 or Bono. If that’s all she wrote, I wouldn’t have cared. It’s impossible for any artist to please everyone. I’ve long since learned to accept people not liking U2 – and I really don’t care.
However, I was annoyed by her mocking of Bon’s VERY important work. Bono never said he was trying to “save the world” – TIME wrote that to sell more copies of their magazine. However, Bono is clearly trying to make a difference in the world – something that more of us should be doing.
When April’s biggest attack against Bono is the weakly humorous comment about him not standing straight, it really takes the focus away from what he has done. There is a continent dying – and our beloved politicians have done NOTHING (until Bono began crusading this cause). Bono, himself, has stated how ludicrous it is for a rock star to be doing this work. But the fact is, no one else was. This is not something Bono did for a week or two to boost album sales. He has been involved in the Debt Relief program for 3 years! This has taken time away from his band (which is his source of income) as well as his family (where he has a new-born son). This is a true commitment done for a very nobel cause.
So April, mock U2. Mock Bono. But have respect for the millions of people who will benefit by Bono’s actions. Don’t let a continent die because you don’t like how Bono mugs for the camera. This is an egregious hyperbole – it is little wonder why people responded so strongly against it.
Additionally, there was the abusive name-calling in the article. Where is the humor in that? Is calling someone a “dork” supposed to make us bowl over with fits of laughter?
While the writers at u2log.com apparently found the article humorous, I can easily see why so many U2 fans did not. People aren’t necessarily offended by the fact that other people dislike someone or something, but rather by the way this dislike is expressed. It’s not a question of “not accepting other views,” it is a question of fearing for the security of your property and home. And material threats are hard to have a “sense of humor” about. This is not a free speech issue, people, this is an issue of human decency. April had every right in the world to express an opinion on her own personal paid webspace, and we had every right to link it on ours. By contrast, you have been granted the PRIVILEGE to comment here, and nobody here has the right to threaten another human being’s livelihood. I’d rather not do anything to disrupt the community this site has created but let’s be frank about this, we allow you to post here, and if we find you to be abusing that privilege — which some of you have done — that privilege will have to go away. We’ve asked April not to post in this thread anymore, as clearly it’s bringing out the absolute worst in a lot of people, possibly herself included. She has graciously agreed. I think she went too far in her responses here, but she was motivated by self-defense, and I consider that more than understandable. Now are we done with this yet? I certainly think I am.
*sigh* One more point that I intended to make above and didn’t — we don’t care that people have been talking about how they don’t like the piece here; that’s what these comments are for. We do care that people were using these comments to insult each other, make crude and disgusting belittling remarks, distribute information that they have no right to distribute, and even incite attacks on the property of others. We’re simply trying to reinforce that this conflict did *not* arise over opinions, it arose over the inappropriate actions taken by some in response to those opinions. Don’t ask me when it suddenly became taboo to hold an opinion contrary to the majority about a public figure — if this piece had been about George W. Bush then the things that have happened to April would be universally seen as reprehensible. But because it was “our Bono” people cheer them? I’m getting beyond myself so I’ll stop, but I do hope this gets through to our readers…

This woman writes an article completely bashing another human being, very mockingly, and I felt frustrated….
Bono is not a Jesus-wannabe or a God-figure… but many, many people feel a deep and profound connection to him and our Irish boys because their vision touched us in ways that helped us feel human and not so alone.
To have someone mock – and she was mocking – a person or thing that holds so much meaning to you comes as a shock and sometimes, unfortunately, you become overprotective and defensive… this is human.
My own view is that there is room for everyone. I don’t care if your music isn’t my cup of tea, but I am proud and inspired whenever someone creates something – rather than just on their butts and complain about other people…
U2 are still around and still vital for more than 20 years. That’s quite the achievement. Who cares about how Bono stands… if he tilts this way or that… it’s just showmanship… people have no attention span…
Hey, does anyone care about Henry Rollins putting out another cd? Not really. But despite his rants against U2, and they were very vocal, I’m still glad he puts out music. There is room for everyone – everyone is entitled to contribute to music, to art… When we mock one another, we are nothing more than petty and immature. I’m sorry that I resorted to saying that 98% of the world is stupid and ignorant, but it feels true… I’d rather be proven wrong really. And I’d like to see Bono succeed in his quest to use his influence to do a lot of good… regardless of your cynicism.
And to the girl who wrote that article: you show promise as a writer – Unfortunately, you come across like a bad writer for People Magazine and I just disagree with using a public forum to diss others with so much venom. What, just cause it makes you feel good?! If people wrote about you as you wrote about Bono, you’d be offended. So stop the hypocrisy – or else you’d deserve your own site bashing you, right?

How can you “disagree with using a public forum to diss others” and then in the same sentence liken April to a “bad writer for People Magazine?” It doesn’t follow. One remark you made gets to what I think was the heart of the problem here: “If people wrote about you as you wrote about Bono, you’d be offended.” Um, guess what, bud? You’re not Bono, nor are any of the losers who took it upon themselves to threaten April’s site or call her on the phone. I’d leave it to Bono to be offended. Are most people here nuts? I love U2 also, and I admire Bono, but there have been many times over the past 15 years that I followed the band when I wished Larry would beat the crap out of him for being a horses ass. Bono’s a great guy, but like everybody else, sometimes he acts like an idiot. holy cow this is so overblown. i am a HUGE U2 fan. i am also a fan, a big fan, of Morrissey. i also read april’s original post, and i can tell you that i laughed at it. yes, i laughed. it was pretty funny. and for those of you who didnt get a chance to read it, EVERYONE IS BLOWING IT WAY OUT OF PROPORTION!!!!

I LIKE HIM. i became a veg TEN YEARS AGO because of his whole MEAT IS MURDER campaign. but still, ill laugh at him.
