When He Was Kind

We were amused this afternoon to note that Mr. Larry Mullen Jnr. is thanked in the liner notes of Elvis Costello’s new album, When I Was Cruel. Larry is given “special thanks” for “advice and wise counsel,” alongside such luminaries as Lucinda Williams, T-Bone Burnett, Hal Willner, and Bill Flanagan (author of U2 At The End Of The World). Costello spent rather a lot of time tailing U2 on the Elevation tour — I know he was in attendance at all three of the shows I saw — and his cover of “Please” is a force to be reckoned with.

  1. “Please” almost made it onto Costello’s last greatest hits. I hope it gets a proper release at some point–it is a great rendition.

  5. I haven’t heard the new album yet, or his version of Please. But, he was at the Tampa show. I saw him with my own eyes. Bono mentioned he was in the audience. Right before they performed Please! I’ll have to check his new one out along with Please. Has it been released on an album yet, or is it from a bootleg?

  7. Unfortunately, no, his version of “Please” has not been officially released, but we’ve blogged copies of it here before (links outdated now)… if you look around real hard you should be able to find a media file.
