NOT AS GOOD AS THE REAL THING

Frustrated ’cause U2 ain’t touring at the moment? Here’s a few U2 tribute bands in Australia that may keep you all sane this weekend.

Melbourne
The Australian U2 Show (Friday – Irish Times, Saturday – Dan O’Connell)

Sydney
Rattle and Hum (Friday – Cock ‘n’ Bull )
The Real Thing (Saturday – Crows Nest Hotel, Crows Nest)

Adelaide
Zoo2 (Friday – Brecknock Hotel)

We realise not all of ya’s are from Oz and that there are plenty more U2 wannabe bands out there, we just can’t be bothered searching for ’em all….

  1. I’ve seen two U2 tribute bands.

Doppelganger were the official U2 tribute (Bono formed them for the Real Thing video) and they played at my university’s May Ball in May 1997. They were so fantastic I nearly wept and they had 3,000 drunken students singing the refrain to Angel Of Harlem (“ANGEEEEEEEEEEELLLLL!!!!!!! Angel of Haaaaaarleeeem”) for about ten minutes. I saw Achtung Baby at the Derby Beer Festival in February and they were fantastic too, although I was a bit more sober for that one. They basically played an Elevation setlist. Their Bono was brilliant and the Adam Clayton looked so much like him it was almost funny. Same kind of hunched-over pose and silly beam. ANYWAY, I’m rabbitting on again. ANYONE GOT ANY FAVOURITE U2 TRIBUTE ACTS?

  5. Jo: No idea chuck! Just saw them as a one-off. We don’t get much entertainment here in Derby. We’re all farmers. U2 came here once in March 1983 and no one knew a thing about it. Have a look on a local West Country website. You’re a load of farmers too!

  11. i formed ‘achtung baby’ and did all the music/sequencing. i found out the ‘singer’ was ripping us off (money)and got ‘ousted’ from my own band. needless to say i was the only one in the band with any sort of musical skill (went through three singers and all were as bad) and look back on it all as so very sad. U2 must be pissing themselves laughing at such third rate con men.
