New U2 song in NY

From Dennis via e-mail: Last night, one of the local news broadcasts for New York City was reporting on the Tribeca Film Festival happening this weekend. In addition to films, many musical acts played. U2 did not, but a video was shown of them playing a new song they’d written – “The Hands That Built America.” The news ended their broadcast with a clip of that video. The song was a ballad, and the band was playing it in an unplugged sort of arrangement.

  3. seriously, i’m tired of the american asskissing too.. especially when there is a man in the white house who is opposed to anything close to the band’s ideas

  7. Where can we get the mp3?

I think we’d all appreceiate it…& as far as American butt-kissing, I don’t care what the boys write about…I’d be happy to listen to a song about paint drying…as long as bono wrote it & the guys produced it…

  9. It’s people like you Tommy who give U2 fans a bad name.
    I bet you’ve got a Bono pillowcase!

  11. “Gangs of New York” is about the immigrants that shaped New York in the middle of the 19th century, including many Irish. So the title of the song makes perfect sense.

  13. Well, the song “Stateless” was about a teenager with acne…nothing wrong with liking that song, right?

  15. Sorry, my mind is shot. I meant the song “Falling at Your Feet” is about a teenager with acne. “Stateless” is a song I don’t like…

  17. “American asskissing”?

Hrm, I love racism. Let’s judge 250 million people by one man in the White House, that makes so much sense.

Wallow in your bitter anti-American racism, you wankers.

  19. Yes, let’s judge a song by its title, shall we? (“Babyface”, anyone?) While we’re at it, let’s ignore the fact that IF this song has anything to do with 9/11, it wouldn’t be the first time U2 wrote a song about the U.S. OR terrorism. The bottom line is this: I personally like Bush, but America is and ALWAYS has been defined more by its people than its leaders.

  21. POP-ROX: so in order to be a good man and President of the USA, it should be a requirement that he shares the same beliefs as Bono?!? your comment was rather dumb

  23. ProperFan…What the hell? Is it wrong to love a group so much that you purchase anything that pays tribute to 4 men recording in 1 room making the world happy? Personally, I question your level of commitment to this God-Given Gift to our generation? & yes, I have all 4 of the Unforgetable Fire Tour Pillows…& do you know how much they’re worth? …a lot more that your sad-ass comeback.

  25. Eek, lots of fuming going on here. It seems almost certain the song is from the Scorsese film Gangs of New York, considering it was trailing a Tribeca film festival (Scorsese’s production outfit) so it’s probably about literally, the BUILDING of america.

As for America asskissing– let’s not go around defining the proper fans, shall we? I’d rather simply define “What makes a fairly intelligent person?” And I’d say the answer is somebody who weighs both negatives and positives of anything before throwing their support behind it. And that goes for America, good and bad, and U2 as well. (Though I’d say more Good than bad with U2.)

  27. So, to recap: There are no “proper” and “improper” U2 fans, America is no better nor worse than any other country, U2 sometimes write silly titles for their songs but none-the-less, THEY’VE BEEN RECORDING AND DONE A NEW SONG so hearing that instead of being little spolit competitive brats? ALRIGHTY THEN! (From the biggest U2 fan by far. No really I am! I’ve even got the early stuff like Zooropa)

  29. Yes! New songs! I agree with Ben here! Let’s not argue, but use our energy to try and find a decent recording/mp3 or something. any-one spotted it yet?

  31. I agree with Gatz!
U2 have always written about the US in a positive and negative light ever since The Unforgettable Fire ( as far as I can concieve). America stands for liberty.. fights for liberty! The US in many respects is the spectacle of the world, lovely people and colours with soul and hospitality and TV. Despite all this it has extreme problems with gun control, Hollywood and a Plastic Jesus.. and more. Maybe this ‘Hands that Built America’ song isn’t about kissing the US in the arse, but more kicking it in the arse… like so many other U2 songs.. as for the title; ‘ The hands that build can also tear down’
