NPR interview

NPR’s Bob Edwards talks with Bono on the phone (and for once he’s given ample time on air) on the results of effective aid. Keep listening to hear a real world example of the dilemmas faced by HIV+ people in Africa. What would you do? (8 mins, real audio)

  1. I saw Bono report on CNN…”starving for education” report.

I hope he knows he is no different than all the other famous people who have held a starving child in their hands on t.v. and asked for a “dollar a day”.

About the guy with the personal dilemma…I feel sorry for him that he is going to die and his lover is going to die and his family is dead. However, you can’t convert someone overnight I don’t care how much drugs or money you hand them.

  3. I hope Karaoke knows he/she is no different than any other person (famous or not) whose only contribution to society is their criticism of others’ efforts to make necessary change a reality.

I’m sorry people feel paralyzed by the overwhelming work that needs to be done. But you can’t make someone leave their computer and actually do SOMETHING other than send critical e-mails–unless, perhaps, if you hand them drugs or money.

  5. Excuse me, but why does everyone make stuff on this site SO PERSONAL.

Rhedae, you know nothing about me and my contributions to society and you don’t have to. Neither do I know you personally. I KNOW we don’t know BONO personally.

So my comments were NOT directed to BONO personally. It was directed to the U2 community who view BONO as DIFFERENT from all the other famous people who try to start movements because of the simple fact they have more FOLLOWERS than you or I.

Just to ease the tension…I do contribute to society by discussing with them my personal beliefs and how those beliefs have benefitted not only me but society in ALL it’s diversity.

So, my solution for the problems in Africa and EVERY PLACE ELSE ON EARTH comes from the Bible at Daniel 2:44 and Isaiah 25:8(Compare Revelation 21:3,4).
I really do love Bono’s heartfelt desire to help people but it’s just misguided.

  9. Ha ha ha. So…uh…do you…uh…know Bono…personally?
    Do you know The Edge?
    Will you tell us?

    Probably NOT.

  11. Keep talking–really, do. It’s quite amusing. As for me, I’ve said all I need/intend to on the matter.

  13. *reads Karaoke and Rhedae’s comments* *thinking*
    uh..
    eh…
    Bono Rocks 🙂
    huh huh.

  15. Yes, Karaoke, Bono’s attempts to save 25 million people by practical and meaningul–and not purely idealistic–means, through political avenues, is misguided. Meanwhile, you want to cure an entire continent of what ails it by quoting some passages from a random 2,000-year-old book. Brilliant.

  17. This is not directed at one person but I feel like I would like to respond to a lot of people that said what Bono’s doing isn’t right (or the way he is doing it isn’t right). I guess I just feel like it amazes me that he would take time to try and help. He certainly doesn’t have to. Rush Limbaugh said that he was using it to further himself and his career. I just get angry when I hear people say that. It’s not because I will blindly agree with everything that U2 do but, in this case, Bono is DOING something and not just talking about it. No one here in America would even be discussing this issue now if it weren’t for the fact that he and O’Neill went over there. Just by him talking about how horrible the situation is and showing and example (the man having to choose between his kids, girlfriend etc) may actually make one person (or more) get up and DO something about it. Maybe they will write the Congress or maybe they’ll volunteer. Is their anything so wrong with that? Even if someone reaches out a hand to help just because Bono asked them is that really all that aweful. I mean at least someone is helping. I think that is all that matters.
    🙂

  19. How did the guy get HIV/AIDS in the first place?

Why wouldn’t Bono get on a plane to do a concert solely to pay off 3rd world debt?

Why wouldn’t considering a very well respected and proven document talking about an afterlife in paradisaic conditions NOT be a practical thing to consider when one is dying?

When did Lisa become omniscient about what people are discussing in America? The solution to poverty and sickness has been discussed for DECADES.

  21. You are right people here have discussed it. My point is that with Bono going over to Africa with O’Neill it made all the papers and CNN, FOX, MSNBC etc etc. I believe (my own opinion) that the media talked about it more so therefore it was a subject more American’s saw. I think a lot of issues are put on the back burner from time to time (rightly so or not) and when a public person comes out and talks about it then it’s moved to the front burner again. It’s not the only way to get something done for Africa but my point is I don’t believe it hurts anyone for Bono to be out there to raise awareness. As I said, if a U2 fan decides to write a letter or volunteer just because Bono does this it still helps. Every little bit does. What is really so wrong with Bono doing this? Maybe what he is doing will save a life or two in Africa. I know not everyone will agree with what he is doing be it U2 fan or media and that’s fine I just believe that what he is doing, even if it doesn’t change the world may help even in a small way.

  23. Ya, you’re right, there’s nothing wrong with what Bono is doing. Maybe we’ll get a GREAT song out of his whole experience. :o)

  25. DO a concert to pay off 3rd world debt? Live Aid didn’t raise enough money to pay it off for any real amount of time….been there done that I’m afraid…Seriously, what is your solution..i’d really like to know….?

  27. I dont know Bono personaly, like some of you, … i dont know if there are any hidden motives, behind his willing ness to help a dying nation, but i do know that none of us are doing any thing to help our “neighbor” , why? maybe becaus we dont have the celebrity status that bono has, or maybe because even if we did, it would be to much to ask, to help a dying nation. i mean skipping a lunch at mc donalds , to help pay for drinking water for some dying child in africa that we’ll never even see, … why do that?… think about it, bonos efforts are nothing but good, and if it boosts his status in the eyes of a critic, so be it.
