Fully Functional DATA

The DATA (debt, Aids, Trade in Africa) website is now on line at www.datadata.org. Bono is a key player in DATA, a new non-profit organization which “aims to raise awareness about the crisis of unpayable debts, the urgent need for more and better foreign development assistance, especially to fight AIDS, and the unfair trade rules which keep Africa.”

  1. I agree with Karaoke.
All the debt relief in the world will not stop people from not taking their own health seriouly. Unlike cancer, we all have the power NOT to get infected with HIV. Yes, the poor generally speaking do not have access to the same levels of education as those in a higher socioeconomic status, but come on now…
I agree that we should not live isolated lives, not caring about the strife that exists in the world, but even people in the pooerst countries should be expected to treat themselves with self respect. So debt relief is going to stop people from sleeping around? I know- I am somewhat over simplifying an issue here- but isn’t that what it comes down to? Please don’t respond in anger- I undersatnd that there is a huge ripple effect that occurs when living in abject poverty, but still – I agree with Karaoke in that groups like DATA can make simple issues very complex.

  3. Do you realy think that women or men would prostitute themselves if they had enough to eat or the possibility to earn money in another way? Don’t you think they would use condoms if they knew how to use them or had enough money to buy them?
“If there’s NO HOSPITALS, there’s NO INFECTED needles”???
I totally agree with Bernhards comment.
And the problem is not much simpler than DATA is making it out to be – it’s much more complex than you’ll ever understand.

  5. Take it easy there flipflop. These are not meant to be personal attacks…Just discussion of different opinions which we all have a right to. If Bono where here I am sure he would embrace the chance to go into greater detail with all of us about this issue.

  7. flipflop raised a good point about how a lot of people view social problems. I have more faith in the human race’s potential for change than some people might think based on my criticisms of BONO’S WAY. I know too many poor people that have chosen the right way to live and remained poor. How can I possibly believe that a poverty ridden society is a depraved one? From a historical perspective the most depraved in society have been the most powerful and rich. Anyone study ancient Roman civilization?

  9. in response to karoke’s message – are you really that unaware of the level of poverty and lack of education (or no education) that exists in Africa and other “third” world countries as to totally not understand the point Bono and Data are trying to make? The “lack of money” impacts these people in that they are not educated in the corrolation between AIDS and its causes. They have no “proper” source of clean water, sanitation, or health care. In all probability, they do not understand, or are educated on, the link between bodily fluids and AIDS. Even now, a prominent South African politician (who has a college degree) has declared publicly that he does not believe there is a link between sex and AIDS. How are those in Africa, with far less education, expect to believe? And these problems are further compounded by a flawed (or complete lack of) infrastructure.
