Beating around the Bush

David Corn, at TomPaine.com thinks President Bush’s ‘supposedly important new Anti-Aids program’ for Africa is an insult to those plagued by the disease, and a slap in the face to Bono: Bush was proposing funding that does not even come close to meeting the actual need. Second, he was taking credit for money already approved by Congress. Finally, he was covering up the fact that his administration had pressed Congress to lower spending for this activity. (thx Kevin)

  1. David Corn is a liberal knucklehead. He likes nothing about Bush and never will. He should be given no credibility at all!

  3. Why is this a slap in the face to Bono? A rockstar that is trying to lobby the most powerful government in the world should be content with any type of posittive result he can get. Look, I agree with Bono on this issue, but he is still a rock star. Until he gets some more serious full-time backing on this issue, by those more powerful than he, nothing will get accomplished by the sheer fact that he is STILL AND WILL ALWAYS BE a rock star. That’s just the way the world is. Sad, but true.

  5. Bash Bush. Clinton almost had AIDS solved… if he’d only had more time in office. What if Europe matched every Dollar for Euro? Hm-m-m-m?

  7. Yeah, sure…Israel gets more than $4 billion (that’s right, billion, not million) in money and arms, while Africa and other needy parties get very little…Israel is getting the pie while others fight for the crumbs…

  9. Actually the Bush administration has already pledged far more and given more attention to the two causes than the Clinton administration ever did. And trust me, I’m no Bush fan by a long shot. Still just mere scraps though.

  11. Since World War II, the U.S. has given more international monetary relief than any other nation. Yet still the world looks to the U.S. to keep giving. Being an American, I believe the U.S. should spend in the U.S. first to slow poverty, AIDS, hunger, etc. Then spend abroad. I truly appreciate what Bono is doing by bringing the African position to a world stage. And since it is being brought to a world stage, I believe that the world as a whole should take part in education the masses and helping to stop the advances of AIDS and hunger and poverty. This is truly a world issue, not just a U.S. issue.

  13. As an American-Jew, I believe that we should help ourselves and the world at the same time…Focusing on one (domestic/international) issue will just slow the progress of aid to the other…Also, I believe we shouldn’t be giving Israel more than $4 billion per year so that they can kill innocent Palestinians (terrorists…such BS)…Maybe Bono should wake up the rest of the US and tell them to watch international news (England, Japan, Africa, Israel) for the true story on the Middle East…It just doesn’t make any sense how we are standing up for the largest terrorist state, Israel…Oh, this section is about Africa…Let’s give Africa $435 in DEBT RELIEF (not really extra aid) and give guns to Israel…Very smart George…Don’t get me wrong, I like Pres. Bush, but he has no idea what to do internationally…

  15. Go rant about your pro Palestine garbage somewhere else. At least keep it to Africa. And stop defending people who blow themselves up in crowded areas. There is NO justification for that. Start defending thows who blow up those who blow themselves up in crowded areas of innocent people.

  17. In relation to the Middle East Situation and aid for Africa. At the current G8 summit in Alberta, Host Prime Minister Chretien wants to keep the focus on Africa and assistance. Meanwhile Bush wants to pressure his current “plan for the Middle East”. It will be intresting to see who ‘wins’ and who gets their topic noticed more.

  19. This is a good time for Bush to appease Bono and firm up his aid promises….to do the right thing for the people of Africa…Take another step in the right direction for Bono’s cause. (Certainly Bush doesn’t really want to spend time detailing his “plan” for peace in the Middle East…..how could he make a winner with that?) It’s the prudent thing to do.

  21. billyboy: YOU ARE SO NIEVE AND MISEDUCATED! You have no idea about what’s going on in the Middle East. People just don’t go blow themselves up for the fun. There are many reasons behind it, namely the occupation and murder that Jewish-run media where you are from don’t show what’s going on. A “nation” who is run by Ariel Sharon, someone who has been kicked out of the Israeli Defense Minister position because of war crimes (and recently almost tried for ethnic cleansing, which failed to happen because of the strong arms of America) is the largest problem in the Middle East. Either do your research or shut up. Go to http://www.globalissues.org or any other non-Jewish-run media (like CNN, MSNBC, etc.) and you will see the real truth. It is ignorant people like you who are the cause of so much hate. This issue does have a lot to do with Africa. Instead of giving Israeli’s billions of dollars in military aid per year, we should be helping the Africans with curable diseases. Put things into reality “billyboy.” People wouldn’t give up their god-given right to live by blowing themselves up and killing others just because they don’t like them. Their country was taken from them and they are fighting back the only way they can; they don’t have the money of America to help them…And, for one thing, you are right…There is no justification for blowing yourself in crowded areas, just like there is no justification for F-16s, Apache helicopters, and bulldozers (Sharon’s nickname) to tear down homes and blow up Palestinian businesses and homes. And if you read my earlier post, I did keep it to Africa. Everything’s connected…In conclusion, educate yourself, then talk “billyboy.”

  23. It is sad to see that you call someone miseducated and naieve when they do not agree with you. There are, obviously, two ways to look at the situation in Israel and the two parties there have been killing eachother over this for years and years. What the hell makes you think that you make somebody see your point of view by ranting on about jewish-run media (?) and telling them that it is ignorant people like them (= people who don’t agree with you) who are the cause of so much hate. Meanwhile, your own comment is dripping with fury and hate because somebody happens to see things differently. If you sincerely want to be impartial and objective, educate yours

  27. Actually Wendy, I know A LOT about this topic…I’m Jewish and my throughout my life, I was taught that Israel was the party being oppressed…My parents still believe that…But I have done my own research from sources all over the world, including uncles and aunts in Israel and what I have stated above are not my beliefs, they are facts!…..I don’t have enemies. Israelis are generally good people, but their government is the one filled with rage and hate, not me…And to the part where you said Israel has been struggling to exist; they STOLE Palestine…LITERALLY!…Look in all history books and website about this area, then make your opinions. I have been on both sides of this issue…Even Amnesty International(an organization to which The Edge said “It’s very hard to find any organisation, charitable or whatever, that you can align yourself with, without any reservation. We found one in Amnesty International.”) states the FACTS on their website. Check it out…I’m not here to say Israel shouldn’t exist, but to state that Africa should not be jipped like it is by the United States. We should be putting more money into Africa than in Israel (millions vs. billions). And Wendy, don’t tell me to go educate myself. I am VERY educated on this topic and have formulated my opinions based on facts. I hope you do the same.

  29. u2fanfreepalestine is totally misguided. There is no excuse for the way Palestinian extremists have acted. They are terrorists. You said that “Their country was taken from them and they are fighting back the only way they can.” Does this mean that the only way people can fight back is through terrorism? Tell that to Ghandi and MLK. They were successful through quite opposite techniques. Did you also know that most Palestinians in the region hate Arafat and are PRO ISRAEL!? There are currently 2 million Palestinians who are Israeli citizens. They await the day when Arafat leaves. I know this because I was stationed in Tel Aviv from 1996-1998 with the US Army. Maybe YOU should get YOUR facts straight. The Palestinian terrorists are just that because they target civilians. The Israeli military targets the terrorists. It’s that simple.

  31. I don’t see any good reason other than bigotry and hate why Israelis and Palestinians cannot share land. Americans can pretty much handle this and there isn’t much that we can handle. I think it’s fairly obvious that both sides are guilty of horrible unjustifiable actions, but you can’t have peace until both sides stop pointing fingers and get serious about what really matters: everyone in the area living without fear and with at least a roof over their heads.

  33. The mere fact of the matter is Israelis and Palestinians cannot or will not peacefully coexist. Obviously the Muslim countries of that region will not peacefully coexist either. If the Israelis weren’t in the Middle East the Muslims would escalate thier fighting amongst themselves. This would be due in part to differences between Sunni and Shi’ite Islam. Some fundamentalist Islamic groups merely won’t “play nice with others” to put the matter lightly. Sadly it seems that any group of people can have freedom or peace but not both. It almost seems like the only way for the Middle East to be peaceful is if no human being inhabited that region.

  35. Don’t tell me to get my facts straight. I have friends and family in Israel and I get my information from credible sources such as AI. That’s total BS that Palestinians are Pro-Israel. I agree some are anti-Arafat. I am totally against violence and believe what MLK and Ghandi preached, but you have to look at why there are suicide bombers. People think its because they are crazy, but they have reasoning behind it, not that it makes it right, just like the bulldozing on Palestinian homes. And as to “The Palestinian terrorists are just that because they target civilians. The Israeli military targets the terrorists. It’s that simple.” Yeah right…The whole town of Jenin were terrorist, so all the houses got bulldozed…And to giladtheone, you cannot say that Muslims would fight each other if Israel weren’t there. It is true that some sects fight each other, in terms of sects of the religion, but you cannot mark a whole region as fighters. If you took one day to check out sites from Amnesty International, The Jerusalem Post, or Ha’artz (2 Israeli Papers), you would see the truth.

  37. I agree with u2freepalestine. All Muslims should strap on explosives and kill themselves. They’d really make a statement to Israel. Then there will be peace in the Middle East. That’s all the “reasoning” they need.

  39. I only said some groups. Last I checked followers of Islam are still people. I am merely commenting on the state of human nature. People do not get along with eachother. People will also find any “justifiable” reason for conflict or acts of agression. It’s merely the way the world works. If you don’t like reality then by all means do everything in your power to change it. All of us are merely stating our opinions. They are as equally right or wrong as you own. 41. arafatass: Yeah, real mature! You are so funny! At least be a man and write your real name and e-mail. It’s haters that hide behind the bush like you that are the biggest problem. And stop telling me I need to get my facts straight. If you go to any credible website, you will see that EVERYTHING that I have said is the truth. Look at the news in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia…Any news other than the US and you will see…I’m not preaching giladtheone…Just go to the websites and educate yourself. Even ISRAELI MEDIA (Jersusalem Post, Ha’artez, etc…) are more balanced than US news. I am afraid you guys are totally wrong, and that’s not an opinion. With years and years of research, I’m a professional on this topic. It is sad to see people like some of those on this message board are so ignorant. You are entitled to your own opinions, but do your research first. I am an American-Jew for God’s sake! I’ve been on BOTH sides of this issue and I have the experience and knowlege to state facts. You guys just watch CNN/MSNBC (known around the WORLD for their one-sidedness) and pretend you know everything. YOU DON’T! I am not writing on this board anymore because we’ve gone way off the topic. Africa is still being cheated by the United State’s heavy support for Israel and you all know it. I hope you guys all educate yourself and face reality.

  43. “Thus far, this intifada has been a total failure. It hasn’t succeeded in realizing three of its clear political aims: to explain to the Israeli public in particular and to the world in general that the Israeli presence in the territories is nothing other than occupation; to explain that the occupation-control of another nation on its own land, by means of military force, when that nation does not have the the right to make decisions about its life, is both morally wrong and bad from a pragmatic political point of view; to explain that the Palestinians are sick of this occupation.” — Amira Hass, They don’t see the occupation, Ha’aretz (English Edition), August 22, 2001

Cycle of violence and “peace” plans partially explained
Foreign Policy In Focus also adds some economic and other context:

“The current violence grows out of Palestinian frustrations with the peace process. During years of waiting for promised benefits, Palestinians have seen their standard of living steadily decline. In the seven years between the signing of the Oslo Accords and the start of the uprising in September 2000, Israeli policies — including border controls, retention of Palestinian funds, and restrictions on trade, investment, and access to water resources — resulted in growing trade and budget deficits for the Palestinians. Unemployment was hovering at 50%, poverty rates increased, health standards deteriorated, and any sense of opportunity among Palestinian youth began to fade. The anger and despair that ignited the 2000 uprising and the current wave of suicide bombings stems from these policies and their effect on daily Palestinian life. The Spring 2002 re-occupation of Palestinian cities and widespread killings by Israeli forces using American armaments, detention and maltreatment of unarmed civilians, and the wanton destruction of economic and social infrastructure have only increased the Palestinian desire for revenge. This has also strengthened popular support for extremist groups like Hamas and Al-Aqsa Martyr’s Brigade, resulting in less security for Israelis. — Joseph Yackley and Stephen Zunes, U.S. Security Assistance to Israel, Foreign Policy In Focus, Volume 7, Number 3, May 2002

  45. Sorry everyone. I just went to look in the mirror and realized I’ve been wrong about everything. I’m just an Jewish kid who is rebelling against my parents. I went to college and got taken in by who I thought was a really cool professor. I thought he really enlightened me with an “open minded and liberal education.” He even ranted about the Jewish run media. Since I always hated myself, I thought being anti-jewish was a good way to get away from myself. Then I joined a group of “radicals” who were against the establishment man. They accepted me as long as I stood up for the “little guy” (whoever that is) and rallied against “big corporations.” After I got tired of that because I really didn’t know what I was talking about, I saw this Palestinian issue. There were a bunch of people just like me. They threw rocks at armed men. This reminded me of a film I saw in college of Kent State. Those darn national guardsmen. Anyway, my professor and this guy Josh, a fellow “activist”, told me that the Palestians were the little guy. If they were throwing rocks, they must have been aiming at bad people. After all, the Israeli’s had a strong military and reminded me of the big corporations. And my professor said they were “right wing.” I’m not really sure what that means but he sneared when he said it so it must be bad. So that’s how I took up this issue. Again, I’m sorry. I had no idea what I was getting into. I feel like a new free man. Freed from the chains of stupidity. I don’t know how long this will last so any further comments by me should be disregarded. Thanks for accepting my apology.

  47. U2fanfreepalestine- Regarding your above post, never say your sorry about either your opinion or the facts as you know them. Don’t let these people get you down. You’ve done the research, I doubt they have. You listen to more than US news, which I agree is far too one sided. I know there is always a second side. We just haven’t been givin the chance to hear it. I appreciate your enlightenment. I’ll never appreciate the way Isreal and Palestine deal with their issues. Name calling and hostile verbage is not an answer. If these posts are any indication of human nature than Isreal and Palestine are doomed!

Name calling and hostile verbage is not an answer. If these posts are any indication of human nature than Isreal and Palestine are doomed!
