Dutch Master

We’re delighted to hear U2’s new “Electrical Storm” video is directed by our favourite Lowlander Anton Corbijn. Stop pandering to the MTV generation, be all you can be with the arty, says we.

Reading these location reports we can’t help but think “shades of All I want is you, anyone?” And that can only be good. Dublin’s Evening Herald reports from the shoot in Eze-sur-Mer.

  1. Have to agree…I didn’t really like the Joseph Kahn-directed videos (Elevation & ‘football’ Stuck In A Moment). They seemed to pander to MTV too much & the concepts were lame (especially with one video being tied to an awful movie). Not to rip into Kahn too much, but he’s specialized more in slick boy band videos, while U2 works better with more artistic, edgey (no pun intended!) directors. Stick with Kevin Godley, Anton Corbijin & Jonas Ackerlund! Would love to see them work with Spike Jonze….

  5. The video shooted in Rio de Janeiro for Walk on was really nice, much better than the Elevation “Backstreet boy thing”!
I too believe that the video with Corbinji will be great!

  7. The videos for Walk On (original version), Beautiful Day, Stuck in a Moment (original version) were all great videos. The alternate version of Walk On was decent. Elevation was a little too cheesy for my tastes. The american version of Stuck in a Moment had it’s moments…but it could have been done in a less obvious fashion

  9. I liked the Beautiful Day video and the Walk On video filmed in Dublin was a good one too, probably my fav from the last album. The Brazilian version of Walk On and the European version of Stuck both looked good too, from what I could tell from watching them on u2.com. I really loved the Ground Beneath Her Feet video with Salman Rushdie, directed by Wim Wenders. Wim & U2 go well together! Wish that video made it on MTV & Much Music…

  11. Well, not to totally trash the football Stuck In Moment video, it did have subtle (and not so subtle) U2 jokes & meanings. With the names of the players & coaches, The Flys vs. The Lemons & The Unforgettable Fire Dome. As well, the guys behind Bono whose painted letters on their chests spelled PLEASE, girl with the I LOVE NEW YORK t-shirt & the quarterback becoming the elderly postman at the end (Bono’s dad was a postman). The video just didn’t hold the weight of the song, a bit too humourous considering it’s a song about suicide.

  13. Of course Beautiful Day was an awesome video. It’s very MTV-ish and Vh-1-ish to have jets flying over your head while playing really loud. Obviously, Anton recognized that and has the band returning to the theme of competing with LOUD noises going off over their heads. BANG! BANG! BOOM!

  17. I can’t see why people hated the Elevation video. Was it too MTV-ish? Probably. Consider this though. The “boys” are now in their 40’s. They need new ways to attract new listeners. They can’t just rely on the hardcore fans. They need to hook a new, younger generation. ATYCLB was definitey a way to do that, with its 7 Grammys, more than any other U2 album btw. Elevation was a sassy up tempo song, with no deep levels of understanding. Face it, that’s got MTV written all over it. It’s a great song. Don’t get me wrong. However, it DID lend itself quite well to a MTV style of direction. Gotta hook the kids someway. 😉

  19. Good point, I guess you have appeal to the MTV crowd somehow. It was just the Tomb Raider stuff that bothered me because it was such a crap movie! The rest of the video was cool. They’ve done other great movie tie-ins, like Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill from Batman Forever: that was a cool video! They’ve done plenty more cool videos, like Even Better Than The Real Thing, Mysterious Ways, Lemon & Discotheque to appeal to the MTV crowd, and that’s fine…they’re fun & creative videos. Looking forward to Electric Storm video now that I’ve heard the song!

  21. YEAHHH!!! I LOVE Anton… Not only great with U2, but did the brilliant Heart Shaped Box vid w/Nirvana and all the Depeche Mode videos (also incredible)!!! He is far and away my favorite visual artist of my time, and I am thrilled they aren’t going with Joseph Kahn this time and are going back to an amazing visual artist… I thought his videos were ok, but him compared with Anton is like a yugo vs. an aston martin, y’know???
