New single aired: stormy weather

At 9.45 this morning (GMT) English DJ Sarah HB played U2’s new single ‘Electrical Storm’ on BBC1.

U2Guatemala.com is offering Mp3 downloads (mirror1, mirror2), we’ve got it in Real Audio.
(thx to GP)

On first impression this song has trademark U2isms, pathos with a hint of hope, Bono singing the weather report. A deceptively uplifting tune with bittersweet lyrics that vaguely recall a Billie Holiday song. Sink or swim, love is all, all hard work, give and take come rain or shine. We think it’s a grower.

Electrical Storm (lyrics)

The sea it swells like a sore head
and the night it is aching
Two lovers lie with no sheets on their bed
and the day it is breaking

On rainy days we go swimming out
on rainy days, swimming in the sound
On rainy days we go swimming out

You’re in my mind all of the time
I know that’s not enough
if the sky can crack
there must be some way back
for love and only love

Car alarm won’t let you back to sleep
you’re kept awake dreaming some else’s dream
coffee is cold, but it will get you through
compromise, that’s nothing new to you
let’s see colours that have never been seen
let’s go to places no one else has been

You’re in my mind all of the time
I know that’s not enough
if the sky can crack
there must be some way back
to love and only love

Electrical Storm
Electrical Storm
Electrical Storm
Baby don’t cry

It’s hot as hell, honey in this room
sure hope the weather will break soon
the air is heavy, heavy as a truck
hope the rain will wash away our bad luck

heeeey… heeeey…..

If the sky can crack, there must be some way back
for love and only love

Electrical Storm
Electrical Storm
Electrical Storm

Baby don’t cry
Baby don’t cry
Baby don’t cry
Baby don’t cry

Buy the single on October 21st.

  1. Heard it and yes I have it on cassette but it has a radio 1 jingle in the middle!! 🙁
    Great song though. 🙂
Wished I recorded straight to disc. If I can find a phono lead I’ll do an mp3.

ps. Promo single was a present from Bono for Sarah HB’s wedding in France. He drew a picture of her which she showed on the webcam (I missed it) but she hopes to put it up on the Radio 1 website later

  3. Yes. I know that I got the track title wrong. A fault of becoming too familiar with the rumoured title I think!

  7. great song that has really grown on me with only 2 listen throughs. i think this one will be bigger than “sweetest thing” for the last Best Of.

  9. Wonderful new song from the irish boys! Great tune, has everything that makes U2 one of the greatest bands in the world! And also is one of the sexiest songs from U2. Has love, suffer, bitterness but in a realistic way. They scored again! Just can’t stop listening!

  15. to me it sounds: the beginning like Summer Rain and the end made of demo material from Berlin 1990.
Otherwise it’s a great song and definately a grower. I’m always very critical at first, and also i am with this song. But i need to give it some time, especially to the last 1.5 minute. Like i sad, many parts sound familiar to me (berlin tapes), but hey, it’s a “best of” promo single, not a new album and for this it’s amazing!

  17. oh yes, i forgot to mention that we were not supposed to hear the Berlin tapes 🙂 and it was also only a matter of time before they’ll use some of those brilliant ideas

  19. This song is exactly what the doctor ordered. It has that bittersweetness to it that I love in Bono’s lyrics. It also has effective use of prosody…the marriage of lyric and melody is superhuman! The music fits the messages…I think this will go number 1.

  21. WOW! It’s grown on me already. Excellent song! I agree on the opening sounding like Summer Rain. This song was most likely a left over from All That You Can’t Leave Behind. As for the Berlin Tapes, there are still a lot of song ideas on there that the band hasn’t used yet. “She’s gonna blow your house down” is one of them. That song rocks!:)

  23. Thank the maker for this song. I need a couple new tunez to hold me over until the next studio album. Vintage Edge and Bono!

  27. Not happy with this one at all. Something just sounds really off.

Hopefully, this isn’t indicative of the next studio album.

  29. This is great! Very cool sound. The “in my mind” part of the melody is the best and quite memorable. This song is very U2. But it’s not necessarily ATYCLB sounding. If this is the sound for the new album I love it!

  31. A disjointed piece of crap. The solo is great for a few seconds..then WHAT THE!!!! Seems the band has lost the hunger and released some half finished material to the public and tons of pple saying how great it is..*roll eyes*

  33. Well, I knew it would be only minutes before someone would knock this song. I understand that everyone has a right to their own opinion, but c’mon!!!

By the way, check out the other downloads that U@Guatemala has. Awesome! (except the Eninem one).

  35. I agree with KC. Now, I LOVE U2, don’t get me wrong….but I’m ready for some bone chilling stuff ….and all I hear is hollow studio cuts. The lyrics are good, as is the general idea, but it feels very hurried. Very basic….like something I’d make up in the shower. But hey, it IS U2….so I’ll have to like it. 🙂

  37. 🙂 Interesting email adress you have there, KC…
I wont flame you, but als Bill already sayd, everyone may have his own opinion. So if you don’t like the song, that’s ok. But don’t *roll your eyes* because other ppl actually like what they hear.
But ok, you’re probably an American, because you fit in the stereotype by rolling your eyes 🙂

Now, did I already say I love this new song? 🙂

  41. It’s definitely a keeper. I really HATED it at first. It sounded kinda like wuss rock. I hated Beatutiful Day at first too. …….. I’ve listened to this song, Electrical Storm, about 9 times now. It sounds really great now. =) It actually sounds like a hybrid between something from Unforgettable Fire, ATYCLB, Achtung, & JT. …. At the same time, it sounds like nothing on any of those. The guitars almost have a 60’s quality to them, especially near the end. ……. It’ll get airplay just for being U2. Let’s face it. …… To those of you wondering if this will be indicative of the new album’s style….. probably not. TGBHF, not on the US ATYCLB, sounded like nothing else on the last album. TGBHF sounded more like a Achtung B-side, albeit a great one. Don’t worry about Electrical Storm. It’s a great diversion, but that’s all it is. It’s a diversion. It’s to keep us busy and happy until the new album. Like The Sweetest Thing. It’s a pleasurable delight to cleanse the palette.

  47. Like it the more I listen to it…kinda like All I Want Is You in structure. Not sure if it’ll be a huge hit, it doesn’t have a real hook & chorus like Beautiful Day…but it is a fantastic U2 song. Great guitars and excellent vocals by Bono…I love that howl near the middle of the song! Perhaps a promising preview of the new album… 🙂

  51. Do I like it? Yes. Is it good? Yes. Could it be better? Absolutely. U2 are so much more talented than this. I think the words are brilliant (except the part about “colours” and “don’t cry”, which go off-topic and don’t fit with the other, more organic lyrics). Edge..c’mon…this is the guy who came up with the melodies for Streets, The Fly, Acrobat, Last Night, etc. This feels like one of Edge’s attempts to stay mainstream (which is bad and waters-down his talent). And, finally…why is Adam so off-beat at the end of the song. He’s the bass player, for cripes sake! Definitely could have done another take before putting-out this tune. This is one of those obscure U2 songs (like Summer Rain or Stateless) that creates a stir but won’t hold-up in the heart/mind of this hardcore U2 fan.

  53. Anybody else notice that you can actually hear Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton’s instruments on the track? Definitely a plus, the best rhythm section in rock. The song’s awesome, the ending caught me way off guard though. Hats off!

  57. An interesting tune: I like Edge’s guitar part near the end; it literally sounds like a baby sobbing, trying to catch its breath, and then Bono comes in with “baby don’t cry…” I like most of the lyrics, although I cringed at “heavy as a truck.” Overall, a 7 out of 10, I’d say.

  61. Song A-, Lyrics B, Vocals A+ Overall I like the song, whole load of little bits in the song reminiscent of Achtung Baby, Pop and ATYCLB, which I guess makes it the perfect single for the Best Of. 🙂 Loving it sonically, quirky structure in the way Beautiful Day was quirky. Not loving the lyrics as much, that first line, the truck line, I dunno…(g) REALLY loving the vocals…the man I love is back. 🙂

  63. Well, the song is very good, not fantastic, but a good typical U2 song. I liked 2 things about this song:
1- Bono’s voice is back again! Not as good as in the Zoo TV era but a lot better than in Pop and ATYCLB
2- There’s something that it has been missing in ATYCLB… I can

  69. Liked the imagery the song projects and how it links with the title: “If the sky can crack, there must be some way back
for love and only love.. Electrical Storm”. Whoa. But check out the line which goes: “let’s see colours that have never been seen
let’s go to places no one else has been”. Sounds like something from Oasis’ Live Forever?

  71. Crappy dial-up, I am still downloading 20 minutes after reading about it!!! Whatever it sounds like, I already love the lyrics, and it HAS to be better than O-Town:)!!! I’ll post a reveiw to end all reveiws in about an hour;)!!!

  73. It IS great. The first listen is hard though. As a U2 fan, you might be too critical. I guarantee that it’ll sound different on the second play. Frankly, I haven’t heard Bono’s voice this good since Achtung Baby. It’s crisp, clear and has power out the backside. ….. Clear your mind. Now think about how sickly he sounded on Saturday Night Live. It’s the exact OPPOSITE of that. Wonderful!

  75. Ready for the reveiw??? I didn’t need an hour, I loved it!!! That’s all, sorry about the anti-climaticness (?) of it all, but I think it’s a gorgeous song, and maybe it isn’t Streets, but it is great even with those impossible U2 standards to live up to… I don’t see this eclipsing Sweetest thing in chart terms, only because this song is more artsy and that usually doesn’t do as well (here in America anyway), but I already love it and that’s enough for me!!!

  77. Hehehe Ravin, I surely noticed the same thing. Yes, you can actually hear the rhythm section and I love that, being a drummer myself. I think that there should be more attention for this, because in the past they have been mixed and blended in the songs in a way that you can hear them, but not to good.
Even on Achtung Baby, which was praised for its strong rhythm section, the drums and bass where to soft.

Maybe that is what some ppl don’t like about this song?

  79. mostly like it so far, don’t think its their best work by any chance, but my question is…are we hearing the completely finished product? Possibly not… who knows they could be scouring the net as we speak to get reactions, and may use these reactions to fine tune stuff ….

but then I could be completely wrong.

  81. I like the Radio1-bit in the middle, cool & original!!! 😉
    Random thoughts:
As a bassplayer I have to get used to Adam playing in this song, but then he’s always been a hard-to-follow bassplayer. It sounds so easy but it definitely isn’t. Great to hear that Bono’s voice is back in shape again… All in all a good song, can’t get used to the messed-up structure of it al though. maybe that’ll come with a few more listens. Great chorus lyric.
Would it make a good single? I don’t know and I don’t care that much.. Couldn’t believe my ears when they released Wild horses and Staring at the sun at the time.. Those guys move in mysterious ways too…

  83. Hey guys,

A few of my thoughts on the song:

First off – damn, I agree with everyone else about Bono’s voice. Yes, it’s not as strong as it was in the 80s or Achtung Baby, but we can’t expect that from any singer, really. But his singing voice is leaps and BOUNDS above what it was for the last two studio albums (POP and ATYCLB), or even more recent work like “What’s Going On” or his work with The Corrs. And the SNL Beautiful Day performance was mentioned earlier in these postings…I think as a community of U2 fans, we should collectively forget that performance ever happened. 🙂 But can anyone explain to me how Bono’s voice sounds so much better all of a sudden?? How is that physically possible?
This is not my favorite U2 song, by any means. The guitar solo is a little weird and too jerky for me. Edge’s guitar work usually has a very organic, fluid motion to it, and this seems forced and…well…’off’, for the most part. And Bono has written MUCH better lyrics (his Achtung work is my personal fave). “Heavy as a truck”? I’m an English major…and dear lord I cringed at that line.
If this were the first single off a studio album, I’d be very disappointed. But it’s a single off of a ‘Best Of’, and undoubtedly a reworked ATYCLB leftover. (Summer Rain, anyone?)

But whether you like the song or not, I think everyone can agree that if Bono’s voice can remain this good for a while, we’ll all be ecstatic. I know I am!

  87. well first of all, it’s BillIE Holiday.. and “stateless” will never be forgotten by me, cos it rox, along with most of the MDH soundtrak.. and while MDH had a heavy jazz inclination i dont see any, lyrically or musicaly in this one.. the solo is Edge trying to sound mainstream, which is not cool.. the last bit of the song is the weaker part.. but it has a nice melody.. the song is somewhat predictable, more ATYCLB, not like the superspontaneouswonder of *POP* but other than that, it’s nice.. good vox

  89. To me it sounds William Orbit producing… the background guitar, the chimes… the rythm section (not electronic, but very clear and noticeable)…

  91. Ok, I love everything about this song! It is a great U2 song, with great hooks and a lot of emotion, which gets better every time I listen to it. It’s extremely addicting. I think some people just over analyze everything to pieces. Just listen and enjoy!

Everyone sounds great, and if this is indicative of what’s in store for future stuff from U2, we have NOTHING to worry about!

  93. Ben, i agree with you; in the past, the rhythm section has always been watered down. Being a bassist, I’ve always loved Adam’s playing, and that’s probably one of the reasons why I liked POP so much. That album was rhythmically centered in my opinion, and I think alot of people don’t get that and that’s why they pan it. Anyways, to the guy who said that this may just be a demo, I’m not sure the band would film a video based on a demo, unless Anton Corbijn can edit everything together later on. It would be nice though, I think they should make the ending soar a little more.

  95. I like the lyrics. I like the juxtaposition between the hard practicalities of life, the relationship in question and the two foolish dreamer lines (let’s see colours, let’s go places) of a man who finds it hard to be tied down.

I think that last bit, where Edge goes from minor to major, is supposed to be ‘after the storm’? When the air has cleared.

  97. I’m disappointed. The lyrics are decent, but not half as good as the ones Bono used to write. You can’t really seperate them these days. Bono practically uses the same lines over and over (in different songs), and more and more cheesy lines(like “Baby don’t cry”)keep occuring more often. For christ sake, I know the man can do better. show it! It seems Bono is afraid to write something controversial.
and I dunno if bono’s voice really has improved since atyclb. I think he should quit the screaming towards the end, his voice can’t handle it and it ruins the song.
Overall, the song isn’t especially innovative either. sounds awfully radiofriendly to me, which is a BAD BAD thing (IMO)
I know some (or a lot) people will be pissed off, and taking it personally, at me for writing this, but that’s just pathetic anyways and I don’t care.

  101. I’m a big U2 fan. But this has some pretty weak and childish lyrics. Sounds like something Creed would put out. They can do much better than this. Looks like some lazy writing by Bono. They’re much too good of a band to be putting out formula songs like the rest of the crap on radio today.

  103. I like the single overall, Edge’s guitar riff is classic, the solo is a bit schizo ( a bit like Even better than the real thing, no?), what can you say, U2 is Back! If there ever was a doubt. The chimes are a bit annoying in the song, but Bono is right, the band is going back to basics. Eat your heart out Strokes, Hives, Vines.. The best garage band is from Ireland!

  105. Just a question about the lyrics. Everyone keeps talking about the line, “Heavy as a truck.” But I hear:
“The air is heavy as a DRUG/I hope the rain will wash away our bad LOVE.” The more I listen to this song, the more I wonder: “What’s it about?” The first few lyrics reference the swelling sea, the aching night, lovers on a bed with no sheets (are they poor? or just hot?), and finally daybreak. They used to swim in the sound during the rain. So why aren’t they swimming now during this particular rain storm? What’s holding them back? And if they’re lovers on a bed, then why the reference to, “there must be some way back to love”? This song has the story-telling potential and poetry of “Stay” and “Walk to the Water”, but I can’t connect the verses in this one.

  109. okay, this is getting a little clearer for me. The first segment of the song seems to represent a person looking back, with a mix of memories about his/her lover…then it goes to “You’re in my mind…”, which makes sense. Then the tense seems to turn from past to present, where it talks about “car alarm won’t let you back to sleep…” This is the person’s current setting, as his head is filled with torment about his lover (or her lover, if it’s a woman). And the last part (the weather clearing, the air is heavy, the rain washing away bad whatever) is the hope that things will get better between the two. Am I on track? I’m a linguist, so I love to decipher Bono’s lyrics like this, because they can be so appropriately peripheral sometimes.

  111. Bono is now plagerising himself. “Let’s see colors that have never been seen, let’s go to places no one else has been.” Uh, hello, “Walk On” anyone? Not their greatest offering.

  117. geez…what’s with the insults? I thought we were just talking about a song. And I’m sure U2 would want their music to bring people together. I’ve got a Dutch friend, and he’s a bad-ass, no matter how he pronounces his words (or I pronounce mine)!

  121. Okay I read plenty of comments, and if you don’t like the song, you’re not real U2 fan. It shouldn’t matter what it sounds like, hearing the sounds that you know are coming from the four of them is good enough no matter what they sound like. I hate people who trash POP. Its great. And so is this. Giving them shit for the music or lyrics is stupid- try and see where its all coming from, from their perspective. I hear some New York, some Walk On, some Kite, and some vintage Joshua Tree and Achtung on there. Its U2- I like it.

  125. But as for the lyrics: It’s very hard to hear what the actual words are. I’d say it’s truck, because the T sounds stronger than the D, but with luck and love it can go either way. The problem is that the ck part isn’t pronounced so now it sounds more like “luve” 🙂

We’ll just have to wait for the official lyrics.

  129. ok if a person doesnt like the song, so be it, i love it, but so what if someone else does, there are two types of u2 fans, those who can be critical, and those who can’t, and just blindly love everything! i’m of the latter, (been a fan since i was born, literally knew all the band members names when i was 2) but we need to cool down, or else the comments will get shut off again, and we don’t want that do we, the u2log guys are giving us all this bandwidth to discuss our opinions on the song, not insult one another, or most importantly the hosts of this site! so as a visitor i would just want everyone to play nice so we can all have mature discussions on songs.

  133. good tune, reminded me of the doves “there goes the fear” at first. its in the ATYCLB mode i think. i dont think this song is a reflection of the next new album. i think the next one will be raw and less produced. anyway, i read that there are 5 versions of this song recorded, so who knows, this might not be the “official” version.

  135. I am a writer, and I can tell you that some of my writings are superior to others. This isn’t to say that any of it is crap. It’s just that some are better than others. This is how I feel about Electrical Storm. Not making it onto a U2 album other than a Best of supports this. It’s good, but not great. We are spoiled with so many great tunes from the boys, we can surely support them on this.

  139. Pretty damn good for throwaway material. I know this was a song that was rumored to be on ATYCLB (there were a few rumors on boards discussing song titles – Bulldozer, The Earth, The Sun and the Moon, Electrical Storm). Says a lot about a band who’s b-sides blow the other bands’ a material out of the water.

  143. I also hear drug/love but i’m not really sure about it. So Cruel had a drug/love semi-rhyme in it as well. I like the idea of it… if the sky can crack, ie lightning in all it’s natural glory can happen, then how can a personal relationship not work out? Kind of looking to the grandness of life to prove that the petty things can be solved, while at the same time aknowledging that just wanting things to right won’t work (have you on my mind, know it’s not enough) I’m liking it more than i did at first, though the solo is a bit jerky and the e-lec-tric-al storm is kinda cheesy IMO, a good song overall. I like the seen/been lines a lot myself.

  145. Finally….I succeeded in downloading this song. I LOVE it! It’s great! But it will sound best when it is played live on the next tour! Then it has potential to grow in strength. Remember friends, the bottom line is that this song is just a teaser to get us to buy the ‘best of’ cd, nothing more and nothing less (like we need a reason….. yeah sure..).
So now I think it is save to say that the single release will be as follows:

    1. Electrical Storm (single version)
    2. Do You Feel Loved? (2002 remix)
    3. Staring at the Sun (2002 Electrical eclips remix)

    Electrical Storm (2):

    2. Electrical Storm (perfecto thunder remix)
    3. Electrical Storm (DVD video clip)

I think I might be nearly right on this……….

  153. That quarter note half of the guitar solo sounds like one of the solos Edge would play with a slide, like on certain October songs, and the part where it goes to the major chords (last half of the song)sounds a whole lot like an Axtung Beibi track to me… Regaurdless, the song sounds great I think!!!

  157. Ah, well, where to begin. First off I think some people need to just breathe a bit and thank God that U2 even released the demo before its finality. I agree with whoever said some of the guitar tones sound like something from Lady With a Spinning Head. I absolutely love the song…I find no problem with any images or metaphor used in the lyrics. Its just Rock and Roll. Bono can pull off cliche. You have to remember that Pop was chock full of “throw-away” lyrics. Im not disregarding Lennon/McCartney, but I have to say even Bono’s B-lyrics are heads a tails above their’s. Imagery is something a few bands need to learn to write. For instance…”The air is heavy…heavy as a truck”. Now I know how heavy the air is! You have to write for the senses! lol. To the person who wanted to know what the chime was…its an Xlyophone…also used on Boy/I Will Follow. It didnt sound cheesy, its not exactly a vintage instrument…they are still widely used in elementary schools across the country, and Im proud to say i played it in the school band!!

  161. They make them out of metal as well. Plastic, fiberglass, etc. You get different tones with different materials. Now a glockenspiel would have had a bigger sound. haha…this is stupid. I absolutely love the song…even at 95 beats per minute it rocks solidly. The abrupt ending is my favorite part. I enjoy the spiralling out of control type song.

Drug. Love. So all you argumenterers, share the love. Or take the drug (the Dean of LSBS would rather you not – HUGS, not DRUGS).

  169. The xylophone … Mike Mills left his synthesiser at Edge’s house one wild night, and the goateed one made good use of it (remember him tripping over at the football game? nothing compared to Edge first thing in the morning coming down the stairs and not noticing Mike’s toys littered all over …)

  171. Despite the criticism and the negative reaction to this song from some fans(everyone is entitled to their own opinion)I happen to think it is phenomenal in every respect. I notice that most of the criticism is geared toward the lyrics, but those people do not seem to be feeling the lyrics, they are only hearing or reading them. There may be some hackneyed phrases, but I’m not sure Bono’s intentions when writing them were entirely wrapped up in what they’re actually saying. The reason these lyrics work is because they fit with the mood and the rhythm of the song. Some people put too much emphasis on the literal meaning and don’t “hear” the lyrics for their other aesthetic qualities. I know a song works for me when I think about it so much it’s even blaring in my head first thing when I wake up. Then I know it has been with me all night. (“in my mind all of the time — prophetic? lol) Plus, it does not fail to give me goosebumps every time i hear it. Everything works. It is a solid tune.
