U2archive.com reports the following: The version of Electrical Storm as played by BBC/Radio 1 is NOT the version which was played earlier this year for Universal employees. Supposedly, there are currently 5 versions of it. (source: Didi, via mailing list)

cool….more songs for us. lol. But that could work, i couldn’t believe they already played the song when it hasn’t officially been released yet.

I guess Bono/The Edge actually do read this list…They decided to leak a track, listen to input and then realease the REAL one!!!…lol

The worst single they have ever recorded. It starts strong and then what the hell is up with the end of the song? All over the place boys. I love the hook, I couldn’t get it out of my head yesterday. But Edge’s guitar sounds unfinished and the ending sounds like a live mix. Can’t wait for the real deal.

I really hope the song radio 1 played isn’t the real deal. It sounds amateur and our boys can do so much better than this.

Now I’m in a band myself and we just made our very first single. I must have about 40 versions of this song at home. The way U2 work I won’t be surprised if there are about 250 versions of a song. This added to the fact that this single has been given to the DJ a couple of months ago, and the fact that U2 are always working on the limit of deadlines one could argue that a couple more edits/ mixes were made…
But lets all be glad there’ll still be something unclear up untill oct. 21st…

Phew! I was thinking my tastes were beginning to fall out of line with U2’s. Hopefully the song will be reworked a bit more with some more catchy hooks and lyrics. Thank gawd I didn’t fall into the fanatic-trap by forcing myself to like this song because it’s made by the band I love.

I think everyone is being too critical. I really love the lyrics, I can just picture the video of lightning crashing with Edges guitar.
I just think it is great to hear Bono singing his ass off while belting out the “Heys”. This is a really good song that should do great on the radio. But, I do think this a demo version because it was given out so early???!!
Just my 2 cents.

On first listen – just ok.
I think the band has put TOO much into production and lost the edge (no pun intended). If they could transfer their live ‘spark’ into the studio – a la Achtung!Baby – then maybe, just maybe their next album could put them back on track – and I don’t mean commercial succes, I mean critical success.
Over-produced, but 6.5 out of 10.
But PLEASE lads don’t go TOO soft!

i have been listening to it for about 20 times now, and its getting better and better. maybe its not 1 of the u2’s best (if it is, u2 will save it for the new album), but at least its better than beautiful day. i think they r the same kind songs, both r from a bunch of different melodies, and electrical storm works better. of cos u can hv different thought – after listening to it a few more times.

Maybe the version out now is the real one, and the one heard earlier this year was a demo. Production wise, it makes the most sense. Good tune by the way, nice mid-pacer.

I think it’s a great song, personally…I really like the ending, and it’s growing on me more and more each time I take a listen…I like the little All I Want Is You-esque ending. Even though it’s a shorter it seems almost like it cuts off mid-phrase…like building up tension and then instantly cutting it off.
In regards to the “more versions” part of it, I’m sure there’s plenty of different mixes…remember that they had to mix Hawkmoon 269 two hundred and sixty-nine times before they settled on one. That’s 269 different versions of the same song…and U2 mixes and remixes every single song they do, so there’s probably already plenty of versions of Electrical Storm, just as there are also probaby plenty of EBTTRT’s or UTEOTW’s.

I just heard the latest song from the Rolling Stones…ya know…those 4 rockers who look like the four raisins…and it’s called “Don’t Stop”…and I have to agree with the song title cuz I don’t want them to stop (this time). Anyway, the reason I brought it up was cuz it sounds way better than U2’s. Maybe U2 should come out on AOL too.

I love this version right now..but the ending could be a lil stronger. I was expecting it to have more gusto. And knowing u2..i think they have something up their sleeves. There’s no way this is the finished product. Okay, BIG change..the Ending boys. NO change..Adam’s bass lines! I absolutely love them. SOOOO growly!! Go baby go!

So Bono IS a modern profet after all…. Now I understand. Who said that Bono was no longer writing really serious or heavy lyrics?…..

This is what I think to be the most likely tracklist for the single (part 1 and part 2): Electrical Storm (1): 1. Electrical Storm (single version) 2. Do You Feel Loved? (2002 remix) 3. Staring at the Sun (2002 Electrical eclips remix) 4. Electrical Storm (BBC Radio 1 – demo version).. Electrical Storm (2): 1. Electrical Storm (album version) 2. Electrical Storm (ultimate perfecto thunder remix) 3. Electrical Storm (DVD video clip) I think I might be nearly right on this……….

Bono, don’t be clearing a space on the mantlepiece for another Grammy just yet. Elictrical Storm? Damp squib more like. Come on you can do better than this.

this version is great, especially there is the sense of christmas in the 1st verse. in terms of melody, the 1st verse is flat, but its getting better and better. the 1st climax is bono’s yell in the middle. i think most of you dont notice the drum part of larry in the end, its like that in ‘sunday’, or better.

Am I the only one that noticed that this version of Electrical Storm has similar chords and tunes that evolved into Walk on?. Because of this I doubt the version from Radio 1 is the single.

..i would have thought if it has had airplay from such an officious body as the BBC that it would be a finished version…maybe i’m barking up the wrong tree, but to give a pressed copy of a song to a DJ isn’t the kind of thing you’d do if it wasn’t finished…i’m really pleased with the way the version sounds – a good solid U2 song – and most definately a grower….

Vox, I am with you….I heard that as well. Phil: I have to wonder if that would be the reason of giving maybe not the final version to the DJ, in the hope it would be leaked to get some feedback. And as others said above, the time that has lapsed between when that version would have been recorded (before Edge’s wedding) and now, well thats plenty of time to do a few more mixes, add this or that, etc. I felt the song didn’t sound completely finished when I heard it…so who knows. I am kind of hoping that this isn’t the final version on the album…don’t get me wrong, I like it, but it just feels as if something is missing.

I always thought Hawkmoon 269 was a highway sign Bono saw on the Joshua Tree tour, like 269 miles to Hawkmoon… Maybe I am wrong on this???

If this is the demo-version and not the ‘finished’ version, then I would prefer it to stay this way. Leave the song as it is now please! I always liked the ‘not totally finished’ songs on The Unforgettable Fire album, because they sound kinda raw and spontaneous. The danger of ‘over-producing’ is lurking around the corner. If you wait till say the 268th mix of the song, then it isn’t all that exciting anymore……

well, if this word salad is a demo, then i can only say that i am glad. dubious as it might be, however, it would help me regain faith in my man, william orbit. it seemed pretty clear (or hopefully so) that his magic had not yet been applied.

by the way phil, are you sure that you know the meaning of officious? just wonderin’ – though you are absolutely right, you should not go barking…..unless you know at least the kind of tree! go -bbc!

I love it! I love Radio1!
I hope it wins a grammy! I love the lyrics.
Bono should publish a book of poetry! I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
To Bono:
Keep up the great work. I’m praying for you and the boys, I love you all, and let edge sing on the new album! 😉

The William Orbit mailing list says this is indeed Orbit’s work.
If it’s a demo, it’s a bloody good demo.

i think that larry did a great job on the video clip. And same with the mermaid lady. i’ve never seen anything like it. They had a sort of chemistry. It’s what love should be like. i liked how it ran emotions inside you. I thought the initial song was really something different from U2’s previous work, but it gave something to me, if not you, and thats all that matters in the end
