A Rush Of Blood To The Ego

Coldplay’s Chris Martin discusses Bono’s inadvertent input to the making of the band’s (excellent) new album, A Rush Of Blood To The Head, in this MTV.com article.

  1. Martin’s comment: “It’s no good for anyone if we make Parachutes Mach II …” sounds strikingly similar to those spoken by Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry circa 1989-90: [paraphrased] “We could’ve set out and made The Unforgettable Fire II or The Son of the Joshua Tree, but that would have been safe and not very interesting.” I think Coldplay is a band — like many bands — that have been influenced by U2 re: the music and passion for being true to yourself and your fans will follow you. Let’s hope Chris Martin is genuine. In a time when “non-stick, wallpaper music” is again dominating the charts, the music scene needs more bands like U2 and Coldplay.

  3. I am still pissed at him for taking a shot at Bono’s hair, but their 2nd album is quite good. I suppose Martin can live a while longer.

  5. I rate Coldplay and they have the talent to become big, but they’re more like REM (another great band) than U2.
The Chris Martin/Bono version of What’s Going On proves that they could work together AND work well!

  9. rosco: I think he actually said that Bono added a few rows of plugs to make up for the receding hairline. Costanza!

  11. I saw Coldplay live for the first time on MTV. He was so passionate in his performance that Chris looked possessed by a demon. He obviously enjoys what he does…so the article really confused me when it said he was a neurotic perfectionist. Maybe some people are disappointed when they meet artists and they DON’T have some major trauma or pathos going on with them. People think that if you write a lot of good love songs then you must be a great lover…NOT TRUE! That remark about passionate relationships being marked by constant ups and downs… There’s lots of artists who write passionate love songs without that kind of turmoil in their real life.
