Fanning the flames

Tune in to Dave Fanning on 2FM as he’s got the world exclusive premiere of U2’s new single, Electrical Storm, tonight between 7 and 8pm GMT. The “video single” was “especially flown in from L.A. this afternoon”.

Unfortunately, the real audio stream of this broadcast conked out (on purpose?) and net listeners were treated to a lot of dead air. However, a number of American and Canadian stations have been playing the single today:

U2 France caught the single version on WXRT Chicago Toronto. Downloadable from U2world.com. Lots of static on this one, kids. U2exit.com’s offering a cleaned up version.

U2wanderer.org is trying to keep track of the different mixes aired.

Note there’s a little change in the lyrics. Bono sings “we need the rain to wash away our bad luck” this time.

  11. Ummm, no this won’t stop bootleg copies as i assume the actual radio broadcast (which has higher quality than the 22kbs webfeed) is still going. I’m guessing overloaded servers, though it’s possible they don’t want lower quality bootlegs out there.

  39. dude, all that happened was that there were too many people listening, they didn’t have the bandwidth for the world’s U2 fans, its just a regular radio show, that happened to have the new U2 song, they probably just weren’t prepared for this many connections to it.

    this lady, upon hearing i called from amsterdam, asked me how i heard the song so in all innocence i referred to their live-stream. she did still ask my number but never called back. i see why. me liar me 🙂

  115. Just heard the new version on the radio in New York City. Yep…I totally agree about the guitar riff under Bono’s vocals for “if the sky can crack…” – it’s just chords now – uggh! It’s just different, I guess. I still like the song, and always thrilled to hear U2 on the radio drowning out all the other garbage.

  129. D@#$ this song rocks!!!!! Some of the transitions were nicer on the “soft” version, but this version feels more cohesive, the solo makes sense, and it just plain rocks. Perhaps not U2’s finest song, but this will be AWESOME live.

  163. On newmedia theres a file called Electrical Storm(Album Version – from Webstream) and I think this is the version that everybody seemed to have missed. From what i can tell it has a different intro but the rest is pretty similar to the video mix which everyone has heard. Can anyone back me up here?

  169. CORRECTION: It was atu2.com, they have a link to another mp3 from a chicago radio station, but it is not the william orbit mix, the dj mentions a orbit mix, but the one they have is not it, but it is different from the bbc.

  175. Y’all won’t believe this but there is a THIRD mix (non-BBC) of ES…K-ROCK in NYC just played it right now…this one is quite different from the other two…this one is a more acoustic/synth version. Haven’t seen an MP3 of this one anywhere yet.

  185. Found the album version. Nice. There are some slight other lyrical differences. On the single/radio version it is “if the sky…” then “but if the sky…” then “well if the sky…” on the orbit/album version it is “if the sky…” then “well if the sky…” twice. Thx for the link 🙂

    The first impression of this version is very good. It sounds much more finished.

    But I really miss some of Edge’s riffs and the solo starts real boring once you know what was once there in the demo version.
    But what I really, really like, is that for once they didn’t mix down the drums and bass. Usually, on the demo versions you can hear them better than on the mixed versions, but in this case it’s really great to hear the instruments. Gives a more rocking sound to it.
