  1. Songs I would like to have seen added: Lemon, Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses, Zoo Station, Please, Last Night on Earth, The Ground Beneath Her Feet
Songs I would like to have taken off: Stuck In A Moment (what were they smoking when they put this on?!?), Numb…even with my griping I’m still gonna be first in line…it’s gonna be frickin’ sweet :^D

  3. I agree about the lack of ATYCLB love. It’s amazing that 4 ATYCLB tracks won Grammys, but only 2 are on the “Best Of”. =( …… I still can’t fathom why “The First Time” is on there. Why not “Zoopopa” or “Please” or even “The Ground Beneath Her Feet”? ALSO… How is it that cool B-sides such as “Stateless” or “Holy Joe” were left out? …….. It’s a cool track listing overall, but I don’t like how they have seemingly minimized the impact of ATYCLB. I don’t like how Lemon and Please are relegated to the DVD alone. I especially don’t like how the B-Sides are comprised mostly of remixes instead of actual b-side tracks. Disappointing. ……. Anybody else notice the fact that they’ve even remixed history itself by reworking the actual A-Sides? …….. I don’t mind remixes, but not on “best of” albums. Who else isn’t fond of revisionist history? =/

  5. With so many great songs to choose from, it’d be hard not to come up with a great album here. But I absolutely cannot believe that “Walk On” wasn’t included. What gives? To me at least, it was far and away the best song on ATYCLB, and better than most songs on this tracklisting. What do you think?

  7. Sorry to post twice in a row, but it’s also interesting to see how 3 of the 4 songs remixed were from POP. Shows how dissatisfied they were with that end product. As to the lack of ATYCLB songs, I guess they might think the people won’t want to buy it if too many recent songs are on it. I agree with DaveC, the choice of “Numb” baffles me completely. Funny video, weak song.

  9. Surprised like anybody that Walk On isn’t included…then again I was surprised that Bullet The Blue Sky didn’t make it on to the last Best Of…thrilled to see the First Time make the cut! I’m very interested in hearing the new mixes of Gone, Discotheque, Staring At The Sun & Numb!

  11. I’m surprised that there’s absolutely nothing from the MDH Soundtrack – I thought they would at least throw “Ground Beneath Her Feet” on either the B-Sides disc or put the video on the DVD. Can’t wait to hear the new POP mixes!

  13. Also, does anyone know if the DVD single for “Electrical Storm” is going to be just for Europe, just for the US, or for both?

  15. At first I was disappointed… esp by Miss Sarajevo and Numb but I’m sure the Pop tracks are going to be wicked… I just realized I usually listen to those Pop songs live, because the album ones pale in comparison… so the album ones might finally do the songs justice.

  17. How can Gone be remixed? How can you possibly make that song better? I totally agree with Ender as to why they only put 2 ATYCLB tracks on there. As for the large amounts of Re-mixes…I think I disagree. Gone,Please, Staring at the Sun, basically all of POP was unfinished. So they must put a polished version out. So that takes care of 3 of the 13 mixes. For Happines is a warm gun, Dirty Day, and Lady w/…, those remixes were actual songs, not really mixes ya know? I also have a question…wouldn’t Ms.Sarajevo, Electrical Storm, and HMTMKMKM be b-sides cause they weren’t on an album? Secondly what makes Ms.Sarajevo an A-side over Your Blue Room when they were both on the same album?

  21. I like it! They keep surprising us and I’m dying to get my hands on all the different formats! By the way, if the title says: 1990-2000 than only beautiful day should be included and no other singles from ATYCLB!

  23. ATYCLB doesn’t feature prominently on the Best Of 1990-2000 because it is still fresh in everyone’s minds, even two years since its release.

ATYCLB gained U2 a whole new audience of teenagers and twenty-somethings, many of whom are not familiar with Achtung Baby and Zooropa. Think about it, a 19 year old ATYCLB fan today was only 8 years old when Achtung Baby was released!

Remixing Pop, a good thing if it satisfies U2 themselves — I could never release a book I didn’t feel was the best I could do, I can imagine how U2 feel 5 years on thinking they could have done better. And after ATYCLB and the Elevation Tour, U2 are in fine form to remix what they started and didn’t finish. “Gone”, however — the song is sonically sublime as it is.

Ce la vie, I own all of U2’s records anyway, I’m only buying the Best Of for the B-Sides album and the Pop remixes and the fact I couldn’t be bothered burning my own compilation on cd-r.

Surprise exclusions: “The Ground Beneath Her Feet” (tell me it’s not true!), Temple Bar Edit of “…Wild Horses”, “Lemon”, “Mofo”. good to see some Passengers material (we told you it’d grow on you, Larry! took 7 odd years, but still ….)

  27. I wander why Electrical Storm William Orbit mix is used so many times. It’s obviously the must dull version. But that’s what always happens with good U2 songs. They get remixed by a non-rocker…

As for the b-sides, all those remixes… Some of those are really bad. I mean, U2 are a rockband, with 4 musicians. But when you hear the remixes, it’s nothing like a rockband. The only thing which survives the remixes is Bono’s vocal part. The rest is replaced by computerized things.
    But enough about that 🙂
At least it’s great that they release so much material. It’s also interesting to see that they have done some remixing on the Pop tracks. I hope it’s an improvement.

  29. WHERE’S ‘ELEVATION” AND “WALK ON”????? GONNA SAVE THEM FOR “2001-20??”?
i won’t buy the ‘best of’ CD, but the DVD, now i know it will not include ‘elevation’ which is my fav u2 mtv….
why including ‘the 1st time’? as the ‘best of’ is mainly for non u2 fans, are u2 trying to convince them with a song like ‘the 1st time’?
as for ‘numb’, i’ve got to argue with someone here. maybe the song is not accepted by everyone, but its one of the most interesting u2 mtvs.

  31. Why all the A-side remixes on the b-sides disk, when they are missing some classic, true b-sides, e.g. Always, Satellite of Love, and Slow Dancing?

Terrible call on the “b-side” disk!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. I thought the best of was only supposed to contain singles. Most or all of us already have every studio album, so the new mixes will be on cue. God…what a tough job to wittle a songlist out of such a massive 90’s catalogue. 5 singles an album wasnt it?

  35. WHO’S GONNA RIDE YOUR WILD HORSES is one of the greatest U2 songs of all time and I can’t believe that they left it off the hits compilation and haven’t played it live since 1992. Why God Why!!

  37. technically speaking – beautiful day, as far as the music year is concerned is 2000 release while the rest of ATYCLB was released in 2001.

now quit your whinning and start saving your pennies[h].

  39. Also, why are they giving us WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME live from Boston again? Didn’t they already include that on the Walk On single? And, of course, the DVD? Oooh, I am stroppy today!

  41. Interesting… Elevation and Walk On must be being held back for 2000-2010. The new mixes will prove interesting, especially since Numb and Staring At The Sun were my least favorite singles of the decade. All the same, I would have much rather seen Lemon on the first disc than Numb anyhow.

Anymore info out there on the megamix DVD which is coming with the initial 2cd sets?

  43. I thought Zooropa would get the shaft with this collection (primarily to make room for ATYCLB) material, but it seems to be fairly well represented on both discs. Niiice. It would have been nicer if the remixes on disc 2 were not of the songs on disc 1.

  45. hmm… I would rather see ‘Lemon’ instead of ‘The First Time’. And the 2 new songs, should actually not been there at all, as they’re “2002-material”. So instead of them I would have ‘The Ground Beneath Her Feet’ and then I’m not sure ‘Elevation’ / ‘Kite’ / ‘Walk On’

  47. We already have the original versions of the pop/zooropa songs so whats the problem? It makes buying the best of even more worthwhile!

  51. I’m glad to see The First Time acknowledged. Underrated track, never played live (not completely, anyway) and, imo, one of their best songs. In my top 10 list, anyway.

  53. This album cannot be a failure as it is compromised off their 3 best albums ever (AB, Zooropa, Pop) and the great remixes that were B-sides. It’s a shame that any ATYCLB-song is on it. Lame album, no need to remind us there. It’s a strange thing the lads are so dissatisfied with Pop, as it probably is one of their 3 best albums they will ever make – the 90’s are gone 🙁

this is all wierd and good and interesting… and poo at the b-sides, how crap is that!

I am outraged, that is such a beautiful song.. god dammit!

  59. Marketing wise, this is a brilliant mix of the songs (at least for the A-sides and the DVD) All of the relevant songs get representation. (Elevation and Walk On are 2001). I wonder if they had any fights about the listing. Someone in the band or the record company must really like The First Time (highly under-appreciated song) I can’t wait to hear the remixes of the Pop songs. This is ‘Best of’ will be too cool for words. The only cool thing about the Best of 1980-1990 was the B-sides and the videos, and the Sweetest Thing. Now we have so much new cool stuff, I think I might shit myself!

  63. What about the mysterious Mofo
remix by Underworld? which I always heard had a rumored video made for it….I heard it was really strange that would have been cool to have thrown on the B-sides but oh well…I guess we’ll have to wait for the box set 🙂 he he

  65. i think it’s VERY strange that ‘First Time’ made it to the best of… perhaps it’s their ‘representation’ of the Million Dollar Hotel soundtrack/work… although Stateless of TGBHF would have been much better choices, IMO, though i LOVE ‘First Time’–it’s just not best of material (never been played live, snippets don’t count).

i also can’t believe they left ‘Please’ off the cds and put ‘Discotheque’… further surprises include the lack of the Temple Bar Remix of ‘Who’s Gonna Ride You Wild Horses’ should be on the cd as well, period… can easily drop ‘Mysterious Ways’ and ‘Real Thing’ to make room for stronger tracks (‘Ground Beneath Her Feet,’ ‘Blue Room,’ ‘Wild Horses,’ ‘Stateless,’ ‘Please,’ ‘Mofo,’ ‘If God Will Send His Angels’).

and the “b-sides” cd (put in quotations because i’m in total disbelief that such a tracklisting could even be typed for the supposed b-sides disc of a best of album). how about some b-sides on that b-sides disc instead of remixes? i mean, Hello, superfluous amounts of b-sides are readily available (Mango, Papaya, Grapes, etc… all those ‘Fruitlegs’). i can’t believe with virtually an album’s worth of b-sides from Achtung Baby *alone* that more b-sides from it weren’t included. i mean, heaven help us–they’re giving us ‘Real Thing,’ ‘Numb,’ ‘Electrical Storm,’ ‘Discotheque’ and ‘Mysterious Ways’ AGAIN on the b-sides disc, albeit, all are different mixes…

last note, ‘Discotheque’?!?!?! in all probability, that’s the absolute worst track from POP (the only other track that approaches its poorness is ‘Playboy Mansion’–which at least has quality in terms of satire).

tisk, tisk, boys… you had such an opportunity to shine with this best of album, instead of putting out multiple mixes of a handful of tracks supplemented with other singles and “fan favorites” (‘Until The End Of The World’)/throwaway tracks (‘Discotheque’). better luck to U2 and to us next time.

  67. I Like the tracklisting overall, I have a few comments on it:

    The First Time

Presumably this earns it’s place, being on the MDH soundtrack, maybe “the Ground Beneath her feet” would have been a better choice.

    Walk On/Elevation Omitted

Both were remixed for release as singles and appeared for the
first time in 2001, so that explains this.

    “Pop” Remixes

Excellent to have the chance of hearing new mixes of these songs,
great to see Gone, allthough not a single one of the best tracks on “Pop” so it certainly falls into the category of Best Of 1990 to 2000.

    B-sides CD

    Allthough the singles
buyer like myself still has gems not on this compilation, one wonders why some of the b-sides are missing – maybe the fact that every single song on this 2 CD compilation had U2
as the song writer or joint songwriter explains that less royalties will have to be paid to other artists !

    Example:
    Classic B-sides left out:

    Satelite Of Love (Lou Reed)

    From “One”

    Paint It Black (Rolling Stones)

    Fortunate Son(John Fogerty – I think!)

Both from “Who’s Going To Ride Your Wild Horses)

    Night And Day (Cole Porter)

From “One” and “Red Hot & Blue” compilation

    “Slow Dancing” also left out.

    DVD

Allthough unconfirmed, I am working on the basis that https://www.u2log.com is usually very accurate.

For the first time many of us will be able get our hands on
several tracks previously unavailable on VHS or DVD. It looks like all singles are included here from the period. No sign however of “the Ground Beneath Her Feet” which may be a royalty issue as it was written by Mr. Rushdie.

Lets hope they re release the Best Of 1980 to 1990 on DVD and do the same, as we were left without
many tracks especially from the early years.

All in all I am happy, just wondering about a few of the choices.

  69. Remember back in ’93 when “The First Time” was sweeping the airwaves during its mercurial ride up the worldwide pop charts?

    Neither do I.

  71. I love “The First Time” probably in my top 5. I love the fact that U2 puts an obscure track on its best of. (Obscure for non-fanatics)

  73. While I think it sucks that there is no “Lemon” either (and you know they loved it, after all they brought a big shiny one along for the ride for PopMart), all I can say is that it would be a great hidden track (especially the perfecto mix)..and we all know that Best-Of 1980-1990 had a hidden track with October..plus Lemon would be a cool ending to the A-sides falling right after “The Fly”…

  77. Well it’s called “Best of”, not “Greatest Hits”…
And “Beautiful Day” and “Stuck In A Moment” were delivered to the radio in 2000…

  79. Hey, Jim – I love the ‘Fortunate Son’ cover also! That definetely should have made it. Covers should be allowed because on the 1st bestof they had “Dancing Barefoot” “Everlasting Love” and “Unchained Melody.” And where is “Two shots of happy . . ” I love that song! I am not a big fan of remixes, they’re so cold, hopefully these mixes will prove me wrong.

  81. I seem to recall that U2 signed deal to deliver 3 ‘Best Of’ records, so the third one may well be a ‘Best Of Live’. I recall the Edge answering a question when the Best of 1980-90 was released why Bullet The Blue Sky wasn’t on the disc he said that the band thought it was a much better live song. That may well be the case for leaving Please & Walk On off this disc because they developed into much better live songs.

  83. Damn..I am very exicited about this new Best of! 5 Actung Baby songs is great. I love the way The Fly is last similar to how it closed the regular show part of the Elevation shows. Even Better is a great intro. I think that The First time may be a secret track as the press release states 16 tracks and it has no video. I also think it was cool that they kicked off the B-sides with Lady, my favorite all time b-side. I also believe that the reason that they didn’t include Walk on and Elevation is that they would prefer to put the Tome Raider and Hallelujah mix which were released in 2001. Anyways, sounds great.

  85. We wouldn’t be totally satisfied with any Best Of because there are so many great songs to choose from…I would have definitely left a lot out and put other ones, as well as putting non-remix b-sides…But the good thing is that, unlike other Best Of albums, we don’t already have all of those tracks, mostly the remixes. Should be interesting…Oh yeah, where’s the credit for finding the CDNOW pre-sales von b? Where’s the love? 😉

  87. I wish people (johnny boy)would wake up and realize that Discotheque is a great song!! Look I am critical of the way a lot of Pop turned out, the singles mixes of most of the songs are much better than the album versions. That being said, I still think they did get one song right- Discotheque. It was a ballsy move on their part to do the song in that format (never mind the video). Think about the musical shit that was out in 1997!! People were taking themselves soooo seriously. The only good thing that was around was Radiohead and the like (and they didn’t have an album in ’97) It’s also when the Boy bands and the god awful Spice Girls were unfortunatly getting their start and enjoying success. For U2 to put out a song like Discotheque, that has serious melody and some awsome guitar and drum tracks, was flying in the face of all the cookie cutter “post-grunge” horse shit that was out in ’97. If you take a listen to that song it, the lyrics are scorful of the whole “pop” life style. The song is musically solid and produced well. Get off of it. . . DAMNIT!!

  89. Finally, Gone was vindicated (at least “officially”, because it was a success live in Popmart and Elevation Tour).
This song must had been released as a single instead of If God Will Send His Angels, for instance.
I wanna hear the new mix!
It’s a shame that so many mixes were included as B-sides. Where are Fortunate Son, Big Girls Are Best, Alex Descent…(Korova Mix), Night And Day, I’m Not Your Baby, I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Two Shots…, The Ground Beneath Her Feet (as a A-Side), Stateless,…, and all the rest of non-mixes B-sides?

Why didn’t they release DIFFERENT songs in the Electrical Storm singles? Everyone of us is saturated with those Elevation Tour shows at Boston.
Why didn’t they take another Elevation, Popmart and Zoo Station Tour shows to release live songs?

  93. Take a look at the tracks – it obviously has less to do with what songs should be included on the discs, than who gets the royalties from the release – notice no songs except one (happiness is a warm gun) where U2 would have to share the songwriting cash!

  95. Not that I would encourage anyone to try to burn their own copy of the new stuff before it’s released, but I thought, I could burn the B-Sides if I wanted to, because I have all of those songs. But I didn’t want to. Then I looked over the tracklisting and wondered if they would even fit on one CD. I couldn’t burn the CD if I wanted to because it would be 80 minutes and 57 seconds. My CD burner can’t burn any more than 80 minutes on one CD. Then I got to thinking and checked the length of the best of the b-sides from 80-90, and that CD was only 59 minutes and 55 seconds long. The best of 90-00 is OVER TWENTY MINUTES LONGER THAN 80-90! Maybe they will edit some tracks down a little, using the shorter version of Numb that I don’t have wouldn’t help much because it is only about 30 seconds shorter than the one that I have.

  97. Remember that in Best of 80-90 there was a hidden track, October, about a minute after AIWIY finished. So this compilation surely will have another hidden track, obviously not listed in the official release.
I’m thinking of Wake Up Dead Man, or maybe the unreleased Bono version of The Wanderer (unlikely, but I’d love to hear it!).
Which hidden track would you expect in this release?

  99. While i have some minor issues with the tracklisting its still a great collection and the measure of a best of album is whats left out.And it stands up really well to that test.

  101. Aaron- if you’re going to disagree and name names, then at leats get your facts correct. Radiohead released their breakthrough album ‘OK Computer’ in 1997, as hendo pointed out.

anyway, it’s my opinion that ‘Discotheque’ was the worst track on POP. the lyrical content was about as solid as ‘Electrical Storm’ and the music is equivalent, too, in that both are “nice” songs, but not great songs like ‘Walk On’ or ‘Kite.’ i think ‘Dicotheque’ and ‘Lemon’ and ‘Daddy’s Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car’ are all great tracks in their appropriate place: as background music. they just don’t have the same calibur as other U2 tracks, that’s all i’m saying.

i agree with you that releasing ‘Discotheque,’ and even the entire POP album for that matter, was a gutsy move. still, i think there are plenty of better tracks from POP (i.e. ‘Mofo,’ ‘Please,’ ‘Do You Feel Loved,’ ‘If God Will Send His Angels,’ ‘If You Wear That Velvet Dress,’ ‘Wake Up Dead Man,’ ‘Last Night On Earth,’ or ‘Miami’) that could have been put in place of ‘Discotheque’ on the new Best of album.

it’s like ‘The First Time’–i love that track, but i don’t think it belongs on the Best of album in place of ‘The Ground Beneath Her Feet’ or ‘Stateless’ or even ‘Lemon’ because it (‘The First Time’) wasn’t a “fan favorite” played live and it wasn’t a single.

and it’s a shame to see more recycled b-sides, i.e. the Boston version of ‘Where The Streets Have No Name.’

  103. Surprising choice of songs. I think they represent this phase of their career very well. All of us fanatics have the albums and most have CD burners. Stop complaining and make your mixes if you don’t like the tracklisting. I’m going to buy it when its comes out. You know, I like how the group still continues to surprise us after all these years. 🙂

  105. At first, I was shocked to not see “Walk On” and “Elevation,” but then realized that, technically, those singles weren’t released until 2001, so I can see their exclusion. Glad to see that the boys are acknowledging that even though they weren’t singles, “Until the End of the World” and “Gone” have become U2 staples. On the other hand, I am completely baffled at the exclusion of “Please,” (easily the best song off of POP) and Lemon (shortened video version). Also, the B-sides disc looks really crappy. There are so many great tracks that could have been included on that one. Hell, Achtung Baby had a treasure trove of b-side material! Where’s “Night & Day?” “Paint it Black?” “Two shots of Happy…?” (Okay, that was off of POP, but still…) Very disappointed that “Happiness is a Warm Gun” was included, as U2’s version is horrible. Overall though, not a bad set, but some baffling decisions there. As a sidenote, the DVD looks great. Didn’t purchase the first DVD, but I’ll definitely be getting this one.

  107. Good grief, could some of you gripe and bitch a little more? This must have been a hard and time consuming process for our boys. If we all had all of our choices, it would be a six cd set. Some songs had to be cut and that’s that. We may not like it (me included) but that’s just how it is. Now as a fan, I’m going out and buying it all. I’m just glad that U2 is still putting out a quality product in today’s music climate.

  111. Johnny Boy: Discotheque is not the worst track on pop at all, the lyrics are extremely deep if you ever decide to delve into it.. Bono always said it is a riddle about love.. and how we find it in all the wrong places.. Clubs/music and E’s and if you actually study the lyrics they are somewhat powerful, along with the entire song!

  113. Well, some weird choices of course, and why are the B-sides mainly all mixes? Still, I love Your Blue Room so I’m glad that’s there. But the DVD! How awesome is that going to be??!! I totally agree with mofo1980, Discotheque is a brilliant song and deserves inclusion. However, am I only the only one who thinks Mysterious Ways isn’t that great? Sure it’s a nice catchy song, but that’s all it is! Still, I find it to be a good song to get new fans into the band 🙂

  115. Rob’s post at 5:40 see above. I e-mailed him a “heads up” that Stateless was not a B side. He e-mailed me back to tell me get a life. For all the U2 fans on this site, realize that Rob knows everything and he is very sensitive.

  119. On U2’s website U2.com, the Best Of 1990-2000 track listing does not include “The Fly” as it does here at U2Log.com. What is going on? How could the boys not include The Fly? The song embodies the emotions and musical direction U2 entered into in the 90’s! And what about Wild Horses?

  121. I agree totally with Andrew…. the Jeep Mix of Lemon is not one of the better remixes. I too would have included the Perfecto Mix, or the Bad Yard Club Edit as a second choice. Oh welllll…. at least they didn’t leave Lemon off completely…..

  125. Wherre is the FLY!!!!!!!!!!!!I am always positive in regard to U2 over the past 14 years but I am very upset. How could “The Fly” be made to disapear off the tracklisting? I hope to God that its a mistake or that it will be the alleged hidden track. That is my favorite U2 song and was also one of three #4 hits in the UK. (Desire, The Fly, Discotheque, and BD were the other.) It kicked off the Zoo era and has a great video. The 90’s U2 began with this song. How in the hell could it be left off. The first time should be the hidden track not The Fly. I might be able to take it if it wasn’t posted on the official site for one freaking day and taken off. Somebody say it ain’t so. please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  127. I personally think the tracks for ATYCLB was probably left out for Best of 2001 – ????

Because I do recall U2 signing a deal with Island Records of producing 3 “best of” albums? Although that’s what I could remember

I’m thrilled, and I’ll bet all of us will get it, even if it didn’t have the 4:23 U.K. only extra fancy The Edge vocal only DJ (Insert generic name here) 1991 remix of EBTTRT we’ve never heard anyway mix radio edit we were all hoping for: )… However, I’m really looking forward to it!!!

  135. The b-sides selections seem odd. Like others, I too wish they had released “SLOW DANCING”, “ONE SHOT OF HAPPY”, “SATELLITE OF LOVE”, “HOLY JOE” etc., etc. It seems very incomplete for the decade they wanted to represent. Do we have to wait for the career retrospective box set to get this stuff? Hope not.

  139. Keep in mind, guys, we may be looking at a hidden track situation. Remember October from the 1980-1990 set? Who knows what little treasure these guys have buried in there. Personally I can’t wait, which isn’t to say I’m perfectly happy (LEMON? WALK ON?)

  141. “Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of” was released as the fourth single here in Canada. So isn’t it technically a 2001 release? It was the 2nd single in Europe though, I believe. “Walk On” was a 2001 release, but I would have really liked for it to be on this best of! It is by far one of my favourite U2 songs. I would have liked to see “The Ground Beneath Her Feet” on this collection instead of “Miss Sarajevo”, but what can you do? I didn’t know there was a video for “Mofo”!! Was it ever released in Canada as a single? If so, was it the sixth single from “Pop”? The singles were: “Discotheque”, “Staring At The Sun”, “Last Night On Earth”, “Please”, “If God Will Send His Angels”. Not sure about the order of the last few singles though. Does anybody know? Thanks!
