Don’t forget your Kite!

U2.com is listing track details of the upcoming “Best of” and subsequent singles.

They’ve made one tiny mistake, as Pascal at U2achtung.com revealed to us. It concerns the “Electrical Storm CD 2”. Besides “Electrical Storm” and the “Bad/40/Streets” medley recorded live in Boston during the Elevation tour, this CD single will also contain “Kite”, recorded at the same concert. This will be the second track on the single, although different European releases may not contain exactly the same numer of tracks due to chart restrictions.

It also appears the song “The Fly” has been taken off the “Best of”‘s original track listing.

Four tracks off ‘Pop’ were reworked for the “Best of”: Discoth

  1. Cannot believe they took the Fly off – it was the best track on the damn album! And probably their defining track of the 90s. Even if it’s “hidden” then that is still not doing it justice and giving it the prominence it deserves. Fingers crossed (and toes!) that u2.com has just got it wrong as usual…

  3. You mean 3 tracks were remixed off “Pop”, and one track off “Zooropa”. 😉

Leaving off The Fly is a bit of a downer, but much like Keir (comment above), I too have the single, album, etc.

  5. inclusions…
Mofo–defines Pop and would have added variance to the album’Please’=beautful and True..(Believe me i live in N.I.)
Exclusion=the average, and let’s admit it the video makes the song–‘Numb’.Lemon would have been better.
    Good to see…
The inclusion of’Gone’=Beautiful, and’The first Time’,(though would have been better hidden in an October kind of way…please don’t tell me this fate has befallen the great single that heralded the decade–‘The Fly’)
    Other suggestions for inclusion…
‘Tryin’ to throw you your arms around the world’, as a great mid-pacer–‘Dirty Day’a very underrated Great song, and Bono’s greatest lyrical hour–‘So Cruel’…Zooropa and Zoostation for B-sides…Pop tour version of ‘Miami’Larry’s fav.on Pop -‘Playboy Mansion’….Ah well i don’t like seeing songs appear on both A+B sides….Over egging the cake i feel…Ah well as long as they didn’t include ‘One minute Warning’ –I’ll buy!!!

  7. Here is a thought, maybe The Fly will be on the Japanese release, like One Tree Hill was, and the rest of us will be left without it. Then The First Time becomes the hidden track after Numb. I admit, there is a chance that I could be wrong about this.

  9. Big cheers for Kite..

Big jeers for the ommission of The Fly. Let’s hope that it’s the hidden track this time out. After looking over the tracklisting, The Fly seemed like the ideal final track.

  15. It’s positively CRIMINAL to leave ‘The Fly’ off the CD! What a big, big, big shame. Their first single of the ’90s, a concert staple, and perhaps the Edge’s most amazing guitar work ever. I’m stunned.

  19. Okay, I don;t usually complain a lot but THE FLY? WHOS GONNA RIDE YOUR WILD HORSES? IF GOD WILL SEND HIS ANGELS? Mostly remixes for b-sides? Releasing songs on b-sides that we’ve already got on the Boston video? Let me tell you, you’re wasting your money if you buy this. U2 HAVE SOLD OUT.

  21. I love the “U2 have sold out” comment. People have been screaming that since the band were formed. Sold out to what, exactly? It’s a “BEST OF”. If you want a best of full of rarities, get a burner, download some mp3s. If you’ve already got all this stuff, then don’t buy it. Nobody’s forcing anyone to buy it.

  23. First of all, I think that there will also be a hidden track on this disc, just like october was on the first best of. What song would fit nicely for that? The first time… No question about that, so that seems logical. Cant it be that the Fly is simply before that track? And that they made a mistake at u2.com? The release of the Fly was a milestone for U2: anticipation for Achtung Baby was extremely high worldwide, and with the Fly they amazed the whole world (who were expecting a Joshua Tree part 2) with the reinvention of themselves… So how can a sane person leave such an “important” track of this collection? It was a big hit as well, right? I’m amazed…

  25. I can’t believe that one guy said he was only 8 when he first heard “The Fly” on the radio … I can feel the age spots bursting out on my hands. “The Fly” is such an important song, IMHO, which defined the “new” U2 and the exciting sound they were going to expose us to as the 1990s were just opening up. The best quote I ever heard about that song was when an interviewer asked the Edge to describe this new sound in “The Fly” and he said “It’s the sound of four guys chopping down the Joshua Tree.” He meant that as no disrespect to the band’s older sound, but to signal a change was a-comin’ and to tear down your perceptions and definitions of what a band should sound like. I hope it is a hidden track for the sake of those fans who may not have bought “Achtung, Baby” or the single — it’s a real treasure.

  27. Vonb: I just feel that they don’t put as much effort in as they used to. They used to come up with great b-sides, and a lot of them too. They seem content on plying us with worthless remixes and live tracks that we’ve already got on video. What ever happened to the days of Under A Blood Red Sky when you got a video and then the soundtrack contained recordings from a different gig altogether? I’m not opposed to the Greatest Hits – I’d just like to see a little more care taken. And, since they performed about 100 concerts on Elevation, why not use some songs from one of the other 99 shows instead of always referring to that one in Boston? You see what I mean? Of sourse I’ll always buy whatever they put out but I do sometimes feel ripped off….sniff

  29. They removed ‘The Fly’!? That’s just wrong. One of the best tracks off of Achtung and one of my favorites live (mmmm, Edge).

Someone do one of those silly big net petition thingies that no one cares about.

  31. Let’s not forget that the Fly was U2’s second UK No.1 Single out of 3 so far,Desire 1989 and Beautiful Day 2000 being the others. Seeing this is their main singles market in terms of prestige, I’m pretty sure the song will be on the UK and ROI release at least !

  33. I do agree with Ben..I also know U2 can’t possibly please everyone with the choices they make, but hey…Even if The Fly is the hidden track it doesn’t do it justice! Bono obviousy likes The First Time very much (M$H) and too me, it would definately be the PERFECT hidden track..I don’t care that much for all the remix-stuff on the B-sides.I just don’t like it that much. And if they really want some remixes on the B-sides, why not POPMUZIK (The Popmart Mix) or Lemon (The PERFECTO mix)?? Some things just don’t make that much sense to me..But Bono, if you’re out there reading this..I still love you guys!!!

  35. U2 have always sold out. I love the packed shows and the just on the edge of mainstream rock. Have you ever seen a concert where the room is half full. It stinks. Even if the band is great it is hard to get the good vibe out there. I love that Bono is loved and hated. I love that U2 are rich but still aggresively artistic. I love that they acknowledge the pitfalls and benefits of their position. I could have my own track listing and it would include zooropa, the fly, kite, stateless and others but i already have them on cd anyway. i listen to them all the time. the best of disc isn’t really for the diehard U2 fan. don’t you already have all that music? i know so many people who tell me that the sweetest thing 2000 mix is their favorite U2 song and let me tell you none of them love the fly or bad or i will follow (i will what?) but they were so psyched when bono played the piano and sung that song on elevation. it got them in the building and they were blown away by all the other songs they thought they didn’t like. i love acceptance speeches and fancy clothes, big time risks with just off the tip of your tongue vaguely transcendent lyrics. i’m in that slipstream.

  37. In the ‘original song’ vs remix argument… one must realize that a TON of the non-remix b-sides during the 90s were covers. While 80-90 had one cover on the b-side disc, I think they wanted to concentrate on what U2 was during the 90s, and not just their tributes to a dozen of their inspirations. It is kind of nice to have If God Will Send His Angels, Lemon, And Dirty Day creep into the compilation via remix…

I’m still a bit piffed at The Fly “flying” away.. Hopefully it’s only hiding, as many as said before, it was a defining moment for ‘the new’ U2, and hit #1. Let’s hope that someone made a mistake somewhere, or is just teasing us fans.

  39. The 80-90 b-side disc had 3 covers : Dancing Barefoot, Everlasting Love and Unchained Melody. I think it’s a shame to take off the Fly, that was the first U2 song I had ever heard (knowing it was them) and I was hooked right away. Maybe (hopefully) it’s just a mistake . . .

  41. A plea to all the U2-sneak-peek savvy among us…Let us know ASAP if “The Fly” will actually be included or not. To me, it’s pretty much a deal breaker if it’s left off.

  43. Oops. Redundancy sucks…

Very cool to see that lotsa people dig The Fly. Here in the USA it only went to #60-something, I think, despite all my efforts to buy as many formats of the single as possible. 😉 Shame if it’s not on the CD, but I’m buying it anyway so it doesn’t much matter- principle of the thing I guess.

  45. I must admit The Fly was the most important song from the 90s. It not only relaunched the band but also knocked Bryan Adam’s ‘Every thing I do, I do it for you’ from the UK Top 40 No.1 spot after being in place for what seemed an eternity! Relief!!

  47. helloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, who gives a crap about “the fly” yeah it was nice, and i got the damn glasses but DISCOTHEQUE is BACK!!! we must rejoice in this and wait till MOFO and Please get on the Best Of too.. viva*POP* BOOMCHA!!

  49. The sad thing about leaving off ‘The Fly’ (and not to mention Zooropa, Elevation, and Walk On, but I digress) is that it really reduces the quality of this album. The tracks on the first “Best of” are phenomenally stronger than these selections. I mean, does the world really need yet another ‘Discotheque’ remix from U2?

I think U2 is trying too hard to make fans and critics alike reconsider their position on ‘Pop.’ Leaving off ‘The Fly’ will be remembered among U2 fans as one of the very, very, rare, bad decisions U2 has made.

  51. Anyway, the biggest shame is that Zoo Station is not on the album. If they wanna make a Best of 1990-2000 they should only re-release Achtung Baby. They will never make an album like that.

  55. bono@yahoo…what is your source? I ‘suggested’ (in the 8th comment) that The Fly would be on the Japanese release. But how do you know that Lemon will be the hidden track? Please respond and don’t leave us hanging.

  57. I give up!!! Everyone is saying this song is on and that song is hidden… What does it matter, every die hard fan knows how many brilliant songs U2 have. With the release of this new best of a lot of people will buy this CD only for a couple of songs that they know, and hopefully it will open their eyes up to just how good U2 really are. If it makes a few of them extend their U2 collection by a couple of discs then it can only be a good thing. Every true fan would have a list of thirty or so songs to put on this best of, but it just wont happen, maybe in about 20-30 when the do a beatles type anthology on them!! Until that moment happens, sit back and enjoy the ride, wherever U2 decides to take us next…
