  1. Ohmigod… Do you have -any- idea how dissettling that picture is when you plop down behind your ‘puter after having wandered off for lunch, happily munching on a seemingly harmless mozarella/tomato thingie?
    I’ll be scarred forever.
Im sueing you for empotional damage done.

  3. An American black woman who has attained great respect, and an Irishman born with a plastic spoon – NOT a silver.
I greatly admire these two people so I just hope they have something relevant to say about the state of the world rather than mutual back-slapping.
And no, I haven’t read any transcripts because I’m looking forward to the show.

  5. Props to the O to having Bono on the show (finally). The ‘B’ is getting a little thin on top. . ., It’s god’s punishment for wearing that awful Unforgettable-Fire-Mullet.

  7. So much for the guy from Coldplay accusing Bono of having hairplugs — looks pretty “natch” to me. Maybe he should revert to the PopMart-shaven look.

  9. Heard the rumor Bono jumped in the stage with The Rolling Stones while being at Chicago, jammed with them for a moment, and then he is gone from the stage. Wonder why there haven’t been any notes about it

  11. I was pleasantly surprised by the program… Oprah is usually so much pop psychology mush, but once in a while she pulls it out of the hat with a real, substantial issue. She asked Bono more honest questions than CNN. Good for them both!

  13. This had the potential to be crap, or get cut short, and you know what??? Neither of those things happened… When I have seen Oprah, she usually does half a show on one thing and then another half on something else… She really gave Bono is props and much respect, so I say kick ass job to Oprah, I was very satisfied with this show as a hardcore U2 freak and as someone who feels strongly about debt-relief, she did a great job addressing both, and where so many others have done half to a third of what she did… And of course King Boogaloo, still the coolest man on the planet!!! Now if I can ever catch an airing of the damn Electrical Storm video, I can relax a little!!!

  15. That was really the best interview on the subject with Bono that I have ever seen. I don’t usually like the subject matter of Oprah’s shows. (Just not my cup of tea.). However, that being said, no one can ever confuse her for being a fool. I think she showed just how smart she really can be yesterday. It’s proof of the reasons why she has been so successful in her career. I don’t mean popularity. She came across as very educated, extremely intelligent (sometimes two different things), and genuine. We all know, that given the chance Bono can be extremely engaging, but Oprah was the best interviewer of Bono that I have ever seen. Sometimes interviewers don’t know what to make of Bono, and it comes across as if they don’t know what they are doing. But, in yesterday’s show she gave Bono the perfect stage and time to elaborate. Half of the credit for the quality of yesterday’s show should go to Oprah. Bono will always kick ass, but Oprah rarely does. She really was good yesterday.

  17. Oh yeah, ilove the whole, “I’m not some whinging liberal. Some hippie with flowers in my hair. I know what tough is. I come form punk rock.” That was damn cool!!

  21. Oprah did a good job. Bono did a spectacular job. Yeah, he was nervous but he was funny, charming and informed. Like she said, smarter than smart. During her “After the Show” segment, she told Bobby Shriver “He’s as amazing as you promised me he would be.” Way to go, Bono.

  23. I thought the show was weak. Oprah is fluff. Anything to make the soccer moms nod in agreement. . . but just an opinion. And what’s with that annoying “Baaaah-no the rockstar” jabbing. Can I get an “Amen”?

  25. my only qualm was that Oprah kept pronouncing “Bono” like it was in italics. I guess she was just genuinely impressed with him.

  27. First I must clarify that I think Bono is tremendous in whatever he does (minus driving I hear), and I admire his resolve and determination in these current matters.I believe he is on the right track rallying the “folks” that he does; politicians, moneybags, people interested in grass-root movements. But Oprah? I honestly think Bono looked annoyed at her comments. He didn’t seem very engaged in the conversation to me . . .perhaps choppy editing?? Oprah is fluff. I mean seriously people. Oprah’s regular viewers are sheep. Look at the Oprah book club! A cross section of good literature? Hmmmm. Oprah should have stayed in her realm of pandering Dr. Phil to the masses.
I think the issues need to get out, and I think Bono WAS heading in the right direction. Sure, Bono is a visionary person, I just think he made a misstep here and I’m convinced that the Oprah appearance will trivialize the movement . . .all the while . . .those caring moms drive home in their SUVs.

  31. Jonec: can see your point….but look at it from this perspective. I have a friend who is not much into U2 at all, but who regulary watches Oprah. Now suddenly she has a bit more knowledge about the issues Bono is on about it….it hasn’t got her into U2 no, but its got her thinking some about whats going on outside her own country. And I think thats the intentions here: to get peopleto think some- thats where it starts… so in the end, Bono’s venture into this “soccer mom” arena will have been successful as far as he would look at it.

  33. It’s funny. I’ve had this conversation before with a friend when Bono was meeting with the president and such. She questioned how much will really get done while trying to work with the masses, but I’ve got a little more faith than she does. It was an opportunity to bring a message to a bigger audience audience and perhaps educate some people. We may have heard this arguement before (and being the die-hard u2 fans, I don’t doubt it). But for the person who just discovered the issue — it wasn’t a bad 101 class.

  35. WHY FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MUST HE TALK SO SLOWLY (LIKE EVERYONE IN THE WORLD IS HANGING ON HIS EVERY WORD) AND CARRY HIMSELF LIKE A PRETENTIOUS, SELF-IMPORTANT JERK?!?!? I love U2, and because Bono is so much more than that I am a huge fan who can forgive these things — I just wish he would learn to speak articulately and intelligently without all the extra “ATTITUDE.”

  37. To Allan:
While I respect your opinion and respect your right to voice it, why for the love of God must you use caps in your messages and come across as a loud mouthed jerk? We can read your message without them. As kind human beings, we forgive you. I just wish you would learn to type intelligently without all the extra “attitude”.

  39. I don’t really take it as attitude. I think he is trying to find the right words to use. It seems to me as if he is taking his time because the words weren’t coming so easy to him. I really found him to be quite humble on Oprah. Maybe I’m wrong but that’s how I saw it

  43. Maybe the caps were a little excessive, but I just get annoyed when Bono (somone who I look up to and whose work I love)goes on these shows and acts the way he does. I feel like he would win over so many more fans if he didn’t act so smug. I only get annoyed because I think he’s great and feel he deserves an even bigger fan base than he already has.

  47. er…the man asked the audience during commercial breaks if he was doing ok…that hardly sounds smug to me. I’ve seen bono act smug before…but I didn’t see that on Oprah.

  49. He didn’t seem smug, he actually seemed embarassed by the personal praise heaped on him. He talks slowly because he wants to be clear in what he’s saying..and it works. It adds weight to what he’s talking about. You can’t deny the passion & anger he feels towards these problems. He brings his own kids into the conversation frequently, which really is a strong motivation behind what he does, because he really doesn’t like the world his kids are going to inherit. He’s a fantastic communicator, the Drop the Debt organization couldn’t have asked for a better spokesman. Makes one wish more world leaders were like him.

  51. When you’ve reached the apex of celebrity-dom, as Bono has, you can do you want to get issues into the mainstream..while fucking it up at the same time. Maybe we should all act self-important…get more shit done around here(the world).
