The voodoo that Q do to U2

The November issue of Q Magazine contains a candid interview with U2 about the last ten years, “a troubled era”, of their career. YouTwo.net has the interview up in four neat parts. It contains some interesting information. Edge isn’t sure about “The Fly” anymore, Bono thinks a Tom Collins contains vodka, Larry doesn’t think ‘U2”s a very good name for a band (but at least it fits on a t-shirt?) and found the Sarajevo link ups during the Zoo TV tour “excruciating”. Also… Paul McGuinness doesn’t pay his bills. It’s a bloody good read.

  1. Out of sync? “Only so many JT’s you can chop down”. Don’t stop chopping. AB, Zooropa and Pop are the best albums they’ve ever made – and The Fly didn’t stand the test of time. It did…, it’s still one of my fav rocksongs.

  3. The fact is that they were going through “mysterious ways” on this era, and when you aren’t 100% of what’s happening, incertitude comes, and when incertitude comes, desperation and anxiety appear. PLUS, The artist, who knows better than anyone every single detail of his creation, notices more things in the material than the rest, and will always be looking forward to smooth it and turn it as closest to perfection as possible. Anyway, just ignore whatever the guys say, just plug in your headphones and enjoy the ride.

  5. The satellite link ups were during Zoo TV
So they said the fly hasn’t stood the test of time. Then why did they play it on the Elevation Tour? They said the same about Gloria for the 1st Best Of. And another thing, why is it an extra track on the UK version of the Best of? Many questions, but we know one thing for sure, U2 likes to tease us.

  7. I’m getting a little weary of the Pop apologies coming from the boys. There are 4 or 5 great songs on that album… just a hole in the middle where 4 or 5 more great songs should go. Regardless, they should stand by their work. Pop was more adventuresome than ATYCLB, at least.

  9. According to my college lit professor, after an artist creates a work (of any kind) he becomes just another critic. Because the work is out there for anyone and everyone to interpret as they will. So, even if the lads aren’t mad about certain songs, that’s fine. There just another bunch of U2 fans voicing their opinions.

  13. Excellent interview! Now, I hope Q does a “Q U2” special, like they did for Dylan, REM and Oasis. that would tie in nively with their Best Of 1990-2000.

  15. If Q does a special, they could call the magazine Q2 *hehe*. If any magazine gave u2 a break during the early 90’s, it was Q.

  17. Can’t understand the edge… the album version of the fly is absolute timeless classic – it sounded like nothing else in the UK charts when it came out and still sounds fresh as a daisy today.

  19. The comment about “the fly” is just crazy. That song is probably one of the best all time U2 songs. Amazing when played live as well. I got the biggest shock when I heard that it would be a “hidden track” on the best of album…nuts!!
