  1. North & South of the River – I never heard that before. It’s nice, I’m looking foward to that being on the best of.

  5. just a few thoughts regarding the new mixes (the ones heard so far..SATS, DISC.)that came to my mind already half asleep: the thing with the mixes on the POP record is, and i do think this can be said for the whole sound of the record, is that those mixes sound much more like a sunburn, or a headache from having too much heat and sun, or from alcohol and cigarettes or whatever….there is a certain madness and restlessness in the sound if you like…hard to describe it; whereas the new mixes sound brilliant (they really do!!!!), i feel they sound really rethought, and somehow in distance to what the ache of the POP album was back then. they sound like really perfect single versions, like small perfect entities(in a year 2002 context, regarding the way the guys th

  7. it’s about dublin or northern ireland or something for sure. powerful stuff. The live version is a mile and then some better than the studio version (which originally appeared on the staring at the sun single)

  9. how come we couldn;t comment on the new discotheque? perhaps you were expecting my words about it haha.. i have to say something about what mr botz said. i believe the POP album is the best record the band has made, and i think that they are in a revisionist mood to make it fit more into the 10 year time frame all the albums of the “best of” were made. yeah they may have been dissatisfied with pop, but as the Q article pointed out, they were really minor things we even could have not easily detected. they know it’s a fabulous album ,but it;s not exactly “commercial” U2, especially in America where they have always been held as these spiritual rockers.. yeah sure i can see the certain madness you are referring to but that is what makes it brilliant, it’s total spontaneity, it’s an experiment that went RIGHT (the critics DID like it, the public may have not)and it’s a concept album that i feel is of utmost importance when it was made, and especially today, where the word “pop” has become so ubiquitous. i also think it features their most brilliant lyrics and yes, bono;s most personal song (“mofo” about his mother, who, as you know, died when bono was a child). the new mixes are a sad attempt, really, at trying to fit POP into the overall picture of 1990-2000, and make fit coherently.. which is really hard/ they have utterly botched up SATS and even worse, Discotheque (WHERE IS THE BOOMCHA??) i;m not saying they are selling out by doing this, but i am dissapointed taht they didn;t stick to their original vision.. i thought POP was the most wonderful concept and it was basically brought to us in the flesh by PopMart, their most raucus tour ever. well that;s all i got to say really.. oh, i do like the oakey mix of SATS.. and i like the inclusion of “duty free of schopol”

  13. Don’t really have a problem with the new mixes…or the old. Playing around with the composition of songs is something the band has continued to do in concerts, why not in recorded format too? Gives us fans something to chew on too! Perhaps the new Pop mixes will encourage new fans to check out the Pop album & discover what a truly outstanding record it is.

  15. Discotheque IS empty without the BOOMCHAs -I mean they left the gaps there, why not fill them in? To me, those made the song. But seriously, who hasn’t walked around their house screaming “Boomcha! Boomcha! Discotheque . . ” – just me? oh well – I dare ya to find me and lock me away, eh? 🙂
    Boomchas aside, great remix.

  19. the new sats mix is good
the discotheque mix is not so good.

i’ll give it some time though and see what happens, but i miss the layers and the riff gets annoying when so prominent.

  21. Aaron – North & South is about about the troubles in Northern Ireland as Zooropean pointed out. If I was to name a city that it’s “about”, though, it’d have to be Belfast, not Dublin. There’s even a line in there about the “Lough” – probably Lough Neagh, a huge lake in the North.

It IS a great song though. Incidentally, has anyone else heard the (once-and-only-once) live version of it that was performed on the Late Late Show fundraiser for victims of the IRA Omagh bombing??? It’s WAY better than the studio version, there’s a cool piano part playing in the background all the way through the song. Excellent stuff, look for the MP3, it shoud be on the net somewhere.

    Just my 2 eurocents.

  23. North & South … About 3 years ago, U2 played “The Late Show” (Ireland, not David Letterman) and they played this as a tribute to the victims of a then-recent bombing in the town of Omagh. While NS was a Zooropa-era b-side, this was the first time I had heard the song. I had a very nice piano and horn segments, plus Larry’s drumming was very “Hawkmoon 269”-ish. That version just about made me cry. I had a RealAudio version that has somehow lost its way … if I can find it, I’ll submit it to the fine folks here at u2log.com. It’s very stirring.

  25. The live version of N&SotR is thousands of times better than the studio. I would highly recommend anyone go find it – I actually got the SATS single for N&SotR, and was horribly disappointed by Bono’s freakish falsetto delivery mussing up a beautiful track.

  29. I’m with Lucy on this. The live version was much more sensitive. And it sounds like my favourite tune from the Salome out-takes, Take You Down or Take Today or whatever it’s called at the moment. They really could have gone somewhere with that song. Can anyone remember it? Anyway, NaSotR has the same brass section.

  31. smudger: we realize it’s not a new u2 song to most, but it ‘may’ be a new song to some – those who don’t collect singles & bsides like the rest of us u2-alholics. 🙂

  33. Woo-hoo! I found a copy of the live “North & South of the River” from that Omagh tribute. Ahhh … quite a stunning version. The piano, brass section and no falsetto — Bono delivers what I think are powerful vocals on this one. I’m sending a note to the u2log.com folks to see if they can make it available.
