Anyone know why ‘Lady w/ a Spinning Head’ didn’t make it onto the album?

Man…. Lady With The Spinning Head has to be one of the finest b-sides from this period. The only others that equal it are not gonna be on this cd. The songs that I am refering to are Where Did It All Go Wrong?, the normal version of Salome and Holy Joe (Garage Mix). I think Holy Joe would’ve been a good addition, considering that it sounds exactly like it’s name… a garage band sounding track. Since the band wants to get back to that sound, I am surprised that it didn’t make the cd. Ah well…

Lady with the Spinning Head – One of my FAVORITE U2 songs ever – there’s just something about it that’s fun. Esp. the extended dance mix – and I usually don’t like dance mixes 🙂 “lalalalalalalalalalalalady with the spinning head . . . ”

Lady with the Spinning Head… I love this song. Anyone else think it’s about a hooker, though?

Hrm… now that you mention it… lol
Maybe it’s about the good Samaritan? Bonoo was in his religious writing place for this album… taking a certain thing from the Bible and putting his own twist on it. (Judas in Until The Ende Of The World, and John the Baptist and a female God in Mysterious Ways ring a bell?) And it’s funny how it’s placed on U2.com with UTEOTW. Who knows?

Lady With The Spinning Head is on AB and it’s called Ultra Violet. LWTSH has UV1 as it’s alternate name and is actually the prototype version for both UltraViolet and parts of the Fly as it can be listened on Salome. To make the B side they took one early version, changed the lyrics and messed up with the solo so that it would be different from The Fly

Toze T Pinto:
It’s absolutely taken from the same efforts that led to Mysterious Ways. Period. You’d have to be tin-eared not to hear it. Not to say you can’t hear parts of a lot of AB songs in others . . . but just as Always and Beautiful Day were two choices for A-sides . . . so too were MW and LWTSH. Funny, I kinda wish they went with LWTSH. It has character.

I think LWTSH is about a slot machine or a roulette wheel. Bono has always been on about the whole cathedral=banks=casinos thing. Mabe it has Gospel ties as well.

THE HANDS THAT BUILT AMERICA is out there on WinMX. It’s amazing. Already a U2 classic. Go for it …

IThe Fly and Ultra Violet are my favourite songs on AB and Spinning Head encapsulates all that’s good about those songs. Not sure where blokey about got the Mysterious Ways connection from but, hey, each to their own!

I thought there might be a connection with Mysterious Ways and LWTSH….remember the spinning ladies faces on the ZOO TV telly’s?

If you listen carefully to “Lady with the Spinning Head,” particularly if you have access to multiple players, you can pick out:
– melody from “the Fly”
– bits and pieces of the solo from “the Fly”
– drum track from “the Fly”
– parts of the rhythm guitar track from “Ultraviolet (Light My Way)”
– bass line from “the Fly”
– intros to extended dance mix of LWTSH and “the Fly” are the same basic tones, but w/different instruments
If you listen to “the Fly” or “Ultraviolet,” sing the “lalalalala lady with the spinning head” part as it naturally falls out, and you’ll see how the two songs evolved out of the LWTSH recording. It’s really cool; a sort of window into the U2 songwriting/creative process.
