@U2 reports an interesting fact about the version of “Mysterious Ways” found on THE BEST OF 1990-2000… the lyrics have been changed. *gasp* Read on…
Apparently the change was first heard in the Songs From The 1990s radio promo — the line which runs “She’s the wave / She turns the tide / She sees the man inside the child” had been changed to “She’s the wave / She turns the tide / And no question, she knows why”. When contacted, nobody at Interscope had any knowledge of the change or how it came to pass; and now, @U2 has confirmed that this version of the song is also on the album, not just the sampler.
Strange times.
This “best of” has been a cock-up from start to finish. Revisionist history, the inclusion of Numb and The First Time over Lemon, remixes instead of real b-sides, and changes in lyrics. Mistakes after mistakes.

Whoa . . . WHY?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Come on, I’d really like a reason to buy this album, but thus far there’s been more ammo against me buying this – with all the remixes, Fly not a “real” track and now THIS? I’m curious how it sounds though – I hope they didn’t make any other changes to that wonderful song. I think they should quit making so many changes – a “best of” album shouldn’t be totally different tracks. It’s like what they did to “streets” on the first best of (shortened it) – The original is better.
It’s a mystery . . .

I think its great that U2 change(trying to improve!) their songs.. take discotheque for example, I think the new version sounds far better than the version on POP.
Also, I think it’s acceptable that some songs are shortend because it allows more songs on the album.
face it, the most of us probably own all the albums so we have the original versions anyway

Improving is one thing…completely destroying a song is another matter. They need to lock Edge up when putting these ‘best of’ albums together.
Edge, if you are reading this…tsk tsk.

Dear Bono, Edge, Adam & Larry: Please quit wasting your time (and our patience) with continued revisions to your songs. Remixes are one thing, but going back and redoing songs is often a mistake (exhibit A: “Sweetest Thing”). If you’re feeling creative, apply this energy toward creation of new songs. I know what some of you will say: “Why not tweak these songs? It’s their license to do so.” I can understand that point. But what if they decided to “improve” a song like “Pride”? Would we be so understanding? Just because they *can* do it, doesn’t mean they *should* do it. Thank ya God bless ya Good night.

I noticed the change when I first heard the song on the promo cd I now own. I think its ok, but is there really a need to make changes to these songs? I don’t think so, but look at it this way. U2 are putting out another best of not just for the fans but for the casual U2 listener. They’re trying to get more people interested in their music (like there’s not enough already 🙂 ) Just a theory. Still mad about the fly not being included.
P.S. I’m curious to see if there is a hidden track on the cd.

If revisioning a song doesn’t take up too much time in the studio, and does a good job of improving a song, then I am all for it. The new Discotheque rocks alot more than the original. It’s their art so it’s their right. But when they change a song just to change it…? I disagree with that. The new mix of SATS really blows monkey chunks. The new drum track sounds awkward and out of place… the stuff they do with the guitars in that song now is not too bad though, I’ll admit. I disagree with their change of lyrics in Mysterious Ways though. It takes away from the song, because it is the removal of a classic line in the song. They may have had a reason for doing it, but when it’s lost on even the hardcore fans, you have to wonder if the dcision is wise…

I have one thing to say, no boom cha! It’s gone, so is the song. Sorry, I’ll still buy the album, because I collect them, but I hope to
Gd that there is some boom cha there, that the version they gave was wrong. It sucks, it just plain sucks. The songs they shoulda remixed should be Numb, which they already got, but they shoulda at least remixed the first time. the song can’t stand alone outside Zooropa. With Pop, the new version of SATS is slightly better than the original, I hope Gone will be better with the Edge’s vocals. They shoulda made their classic live songs, exactly like that, like live songs. With until the end of the world, gone, and The fly, but that’s just my opinion, and I could be wrong. I think it’s a terrible tragedy tho.

Hey, I don’t ever post, but this has moved me to do so. I like the new remix of Discotheque a lot better than the original…but I’m also pretty upset that Lemon didn’t make it onto this mess. I’d kill for a B-side compilation akin to the first Best Of, but I’ll settle for the remixes. Besides, the best part of all of this is going to be the DVD anyway!

They changed one line in the song, it’s not a new mix. It’s not even comparable to what they did with the new mix of “Discotheque” (which rocks, btw), etc. And people who are still complaining about the track list, when most of it is unquestionable is just plain silly. I’m sorry it’s not exactly the way you wanted it, but hey, if you were expecting that then there’s something seriously messed up with you. Time to get over it.

Forget to mention the obvious fact that everyone here should already have these songs! And if they don’t, well hey, then that’s a reason to buy the best of now isn’t it?

RE – VISIONIST vs. RE – VISITING. If U2’s songs were some kind of SACRED thing then I would understand why one fan would be upset over the U2BOII. I fail to see what is wrong with staying in the spirit they started with in the 90s with ACHTUNG BABY: changing stuff up/marked difference from the 80’s. I think U2 are asking us this question: Did anyone notice the DIFFERENCE?

it seems that this is yet another u2 record that i will only buy to complete the collection. i think that anyone who pays attention knows that they are total control freaks, re: 4 years between albums (4 years bickering) so should not be suprised at their tampering with the sacred – mysterious ways; the most kick-ass funk-rock track off their gretaest record. u2 have been increasingly lame over the past few years, generally rehashing their past. it will take a monster of a new album to reinstate my faith. c’mon, i know you’ve got in in ya…

As if making horrible new music wasn’t enough, they now have to make horrible versions of their old material. I knew U2 had gotten bad. Adult Contemporary ATYCLB is proof of that. But I had also hoped that deep down they still wanted to make fresh sounding music. The Best Of is a gauranteed seller, so why not mix the old tracks in a less conventional way? Nope. Instead they turn those songs into ATYCLB material. But hey, the changed line could be worse. Say… something along the line of cold coffee.

You know what? You guys would bitch if U2 weren’t acting their age and trying to be something they’re not, but yet you bitch when they actually act their age as well. I may not approve of their re-working of certain tracks, but I believe that it is simply assinine to say that their new remixes of the certain songs make them ATYCLB re-hashes. Have you even listened to the re-mixes? You can only push the boundaries so far, and you can only make so many ABs, Zooropas and Pops. And to say that ATYCLB is just treading water more or less? I dunno about you, but I have never heard another from U2 that sounds like Elevation, Kite or Stuck In A Moment and Grace. U2’s bad days are over and they are happier now. Why shouldn’t their music be able to reflect that? One line in Mysterious Ways or a re-mix of an old song isn’t the end of the world. It just sounds like no matter what the band gives you, you’ll never be happy, anyway. So why don’t you do us a favour and if you hate the music they’re doing so much… stop listening. It’s as simple as that.

Interesting that the people who are complaining about the songs stick to commenting on the songs.

I am just stating my opinion. It’s only the internet, so if you are seriously offended…? I’ll just let that one go. You could be right though. I was a bit harsh.
In a related subject kinda… U2.com is streaming Stuck in a Moment and the new mix of SATS. Now that I have heard a better quality version (the one from @U2 was kinda crap) I think that I am growing fonder of this mix.

Nope, not offended in the slightest. I was just making an observation.

I agree with john – it’s interesting to see this sort of behaviour in most “net communities”, though it would seem that u2 fans tend to be rather more prone than others to this sort of lashing out.

Maybe I am just used to the Matthew Good Band community. For those of you that don’t know (I don’t expect you to you) MGB was a huge band in Canada for awhile. They broke up and now Matthew Good is on his own. THAT community is nuts. I should really apologize for my personal attacks. They have no place here, and I will keep my big mouth shut from now on. :^)
About POP and Zooropa being mistakes? (or did I mis-read that? I might’ve…) Personally, I think they are two of the best U2 albums besides Achtung Baby for me. I agree with the person saying Horses should’ve been on there along with The Fly and even Elevation and for sure, Walk On. Putting a new version of Discotheque on there wasn’t a bad thing though. I absolutely love the new version.

As far as I know, if you go to the record store in December and buy Achtung Baby and POP, you’ll get the original versions of Mysterious Ways, Discotheque, etc., etc. (And you’ll even get The Fly!) So why the complaint about different versions on a Best Of CD? “They changed a line on Mysterious Ways? Well, I’m not gonna buy the album.” COME ON, you guys are being silly!

i think the reason they changed discotheque is if you remember it contained a sample from a song by another band…maybe they just wanted it to be all u2 so they made a few changes as well (substituted keyboard riffs for guitar ones, etc.). about mysterious ways, i don’t mind if they change a few words around. bono ALWAYS makes changes to songs when he sings them live, so why not have some fun when putting out another album? in “one” he used to sing “have you come here to play jesus…i did” and in streets he says “dirty rain” a lot. there are so mnay more examples of this… he is the man, stop second guessing him.

Hey Fan Since 80, I know your comment that I should “Walk On” because of dissing the band was your idea of some U2 wit which is why I have some of my own. I would “Walk On” but the guitar solo really sucks, so I’ll pass. And who are you to tell me to “Walk On” anyway? There seems to be this law with most U2 fans that you just can’t criticize and still be a fan. I don’t like the changed lyric or the remixed songs I have heard. I am entitled to feel that way.

Just for the record, this is not a NEW version of Mysterious Ways in the sense that it was redone or re-recorded recently. I have the MP3 here, and it is literally the same exact song as on the Achtung Baby album, with the exception of that one lyric. It’s most definitely from a vocal take that was done in 1991.
The guess going around is that someone at the record label(s) mistakenly submitted this version of the song rather than the one from Achtung Baby for inclusion on the BEST OF.
But again, the key point is that this is from 1991, and is not ANOTHER remade song.

Interesting… very interesting. Mistaken tapes? Sounds almost like the stolen tapes from the Achtung baby sessions. Funny how history can pseudo-repeat itself, eh? I must say that this Best Of has a lot more sizzle than the first one did. two “real” new songs and the re-worked stuff, along with the controversy of Mysterious Ways? I must say that this only serves to make the Best Of more interesting to me. And anonymous (I think?) is right… as much as we want to slag him, he is titled to his own opinion.

OK, maybe it’s me and I haven’t had a chance to really listen closely, but some lyrics may be different amongst the versions of ES. When Bono sings “For love and only love,” sometimes he sings “To love and only love.” Maybe he says both in all the versions…
