  1. The truth is that the song is very beautiful, and you can realize in the 3:30 minute it looks that Pavarotti is singing. 😛

    See you.

  5. As good as this track sounds (along same lines as miss sarajevo/ground beneath her feet), I wish the rough, rugged, full of attitude U2 that was evident in Achtung Baby and Pop would come back…I miss it…

  7. This song really is great. But just like Electrical Storm, its not music which tests their musical capabilities. The songs are so good cause they partly rely on the fact that no one else out there can write songs as powerful as that. Does anyone else wish though that they would test themselves in a musical way once again like Achtung or Zooropa or POP? Anyone agree? Probably no one will agree with me, but that’s what I think!

  11. We must first digest, like MS and GBHF, that a soundtrack song has a different hook than a single like ES.

Without a doubt, the true fan, always wants the band to test themselves, but also still wants them to sound “consistent”.

I like the soft croon of Bono from October to First Time to Grace. But like all U2 fans, there is nothing like the power of their Anthems…NOTHING!

By the way, not sure if this will be released as a single, my hope is that they push out the new Real Thing mix.

    Cheers!~

  13. Well I think this track is absolutely beautiful…much better than Electrical Storm…U2 still have it, so stop complaining..!

  15. Hrm… I like ES alot better. I don’t think that Bono quite pulls off the opera singer-like singing in the middle. Maybe this song will take me awhile to digest though… then again, I have never really been a fan of Miss Sarajevo, and this one seems to have a Passengers-like vibe to it as well. Ah well.

  17. It’s a good song, but lacks either the visceral punch of their best work, or the sheer beauty of a similarly ethereal track like GBHF. I’ll bet it works well for the film, however. This compilation, I think, is seriously misnamed. How about The Best of 1990-2000, Revised and Updated For the New Millennium?

  19. I agree with Lucy. This compilation seems to be mainly to make amends for the mistakes that were Zooropa and Pop. Why else would they leave out songs like elevation, Walk on, The Fly,wild horses, etc…

  27. Isn’t that Bono doing a Pavarotti impersonation (in honor of his dad)? If you listen carefully there are clues that this may be Bono’s voice. What’s your opinion?

  31. I don’t really like the song.. I want some guitaring and drums(Poor Edge and Larry).. Electrical Storm is a much better Pop/Commercial song and also a better song in general.. but thats my opinon 😛

  33. I think that is Bono in the middle, and a tribute to his dad did occur to me… but it sounds filtered, altered somehow… why? His operatic moment in “Wild Honey” sounds a lot more genuine. Opera, immigrants, Sept. 11, this track is all over the place. Still, it’s growing on me.

  35. Anyone having trouble getting the link to work just needs to keep trying until it works. It only took me about 10 times before I got it, which in’t really that much.

The song itself is… well… a “pretty” song. Is it a song I will be requesting or singing in my head? Probably not. That’s not a bad thing though. I’ll probably now burn it onto a CD with other chill U2 songs (TGBHF, Acrobat. Love is Blindness, The First Time, If God Will Send His Angels, etc.) and play it in my stereo as I’m either trying to go to bed or whn I’m trying to get me some.

On that note, I will now hit that preview button. Peace.

  37. This is a great song in general…You kind of have to hear a song like this a few times to get a hold of it…In reference to posts before, I think U2 should have split the “Best Of” into four parts:
    1. “Best Of” w/o remixes and only songs from 1990-2000
    2. “Best Of” B-Sides
    3. “Best Of” Remixes and ES & THTBA
    4. “Best Of” DVD
That would have been perfect, but we don’t live in a perfect world, I guess…

  39. Wow, what a beautiful song. It actually kinda reminds me of songs on Beck’s new record, ‘Sea Change’. I think I like it better than ES…I actually got kinda choked up the first time I listened to it the same way Kite got to me when I first listened to it. With Kite I was taken back to every funeral I’ve been to, this song reminds me of every goodbye.

  41. I believe that the band is holding on to the rocking anthems for the new album. Compare TGBHF and Stateless to Elevation and Kite. That said, this song is ART – perhaps more beautiful than anything they’ve done in the last six years. Whispered nationalities in the middle of the chorus; the 9/11 imagery in the last verse; “ice” notes on the piano; mournful strings; shimmering percussion (a steel drum?). BRILLIANT in every meaning of the word.

  43. hate to say it, but find the song as uninteresting as i feared i would after hearing the first sample at u2.com. c’mon boys, dream it all up again!

  45. First listen, I hear echos of Gavin Friday’s (fantastic) ‘Caruso’ in Bono’s operatic-esque vocal…

It’s a great song, but I don’t think it should be taken as a reference point for where U2 is going next. history has told us that. All in all this ‘best of’ is much more interesting than the last one. I think the new Discotheque is brill.

  47. Thanks Dragon the other one stopped working hours ago and I really needed that 3rd listen…it is a grower…Adam and Larry do have their moments in this song. Even though the song is about the early gang years of the “building” NY/America, it is impossible to not think of September 11, 2001.
Also I believe it’s a Pav/Bono mix in the middle.

    Cheers!~

  49. Ques: if you listen to the left channel just after the “America” in the first two choruses, you’ll hear the whispered nationalities. I can’t make out every one, but I think I hear Irish, Muslim, German, Italian, Jew, and Hispanic. I’m sure there are others in there, too.

  51. This is not as much of a song as a musical piece molded in to a song. In that vein, it is similar to the song the Unforgettable Fire. Frankly, it doesn’t seem to be a single. But then again, niether is With or Without You or Discotheque.

  53. Hey yo, anyone riding this song for not having teeth, or whatever the hell you are trying to say, remember this is a soundtrack song. It’s not supposed to be the focus of the fucking movie. Everyone is soooo all over the band, from “OMG they changed the lyrics in 2 seconds of ‘Mysterious Ways'”, to “I don’t like the new mixes of the ‘Pop’ songs.” I have some advice, just DON’T BY THE ALBUM!! Let everyone else who may enjoy a little experimentation enjoy listening to a few new things. Good night, it’s like the same 5 people over and over again. The world will go on whether or not you like the new remix of ‘Discotheque’ or not.

  55. i totally agree. whatever u2 wants to do, i’m gonna like it. after you sell millions of albums and become one of the most famous rock groups in the world, then maybe you can criticize them…but until then, just respect what they do and accept it.

  57. how good can a song called “the hands that built america” really be? someone needs to keep edge away from the archives when compiling these “best of’s” – “the fly” not standing the test of time?! please. no amount of tweaking will rescue the ‘pop’ tunes from the dust-bin of history. as far as i can see, the passengers record was the last time that u2 truly created something. they have been catering to the fickle tastes of a record company demographic ever since. ryan adams is the new bono…

  61. Fantastic groove. Sexy and stylish. You can listen to this in a german coffee house, along with the other songs on achtung. It is more a Passengers vibe, but with extra sauce.

  63. i wonder if the mix on the soundtrack will be different than the best of version (“stay”, “uteotw”…anyone?).

speaking of soundtracks, why was “i’m not your baby” left off the b-sides?

  67. I love it. I think bloc summed it up best “Passengers with extra sauce”. It’s just groovy. And mellow. And perfect for a movie soundtrack. I think Adam did an especially nice job!

  71. THTBA is a moving tribute to the entrepreneurs and working class – those who clung on to their dreams, hopes, in search of the better life. Without a doubt, this song deserves a place on the ‘Best Of’. For those of you who can’t download the song, give the link a few more clicks until it works. You’re not going to regret it. For those of you who don’t like the song, please direct your comments to the SONG; not snide remarks at the band members who made it. TQ for respecting the artists.

  73. The song is nice, pleasant etc. When I get home I know my wife will like it, which is not a particularly good sign (no disrespect Em). Come on boys, challenge me. Also, what the hell is that operatic “noise” in the middle?

  75. It is a good song, however, I am not a big fan of the “opera” part. It doesn’t really fit in the song, But maybe it will fit for the soundtrack of “Gangs”.

  77. For a movie soundtrack, I think this song works really really well. Not only a love song to America – which I think is a wonderful gesture, but also an emotional solidarity with those who had to leave Ireland for a better life. This song struck a very deep emotional chord with me. Only U2 could possibly do this.

  79. I love EVERYTHING U2 does. Taste is subjective, and taste is the enemy of art. There shouldn’t be any preconceptions…You never know what your going to get with U2…which makes “knowing” a band like this all the more exciting. When Pop came out..I thought it couldnt get any better…but it DOES. Hold on, hold on tightly…U2 are about to blow our minds again….watch.

These guys are 40 years old and can still write shit like this. Give them some fucking credit. By “them” I mean Bono. Come on, in a world like this filled with Silicon, Manufactured Boy Bands and wannabes like Coldplay and Travis, this is our last source of good, music from the heart.

    Give them some fucking credit!
