Whoo-Hoo. Sounds like the live arrangement, me like mucho. Not better that original, just different.

The vocals seem to be entirely reworked. I like the new version a lot. Also, if you go to the Eastline website, there is a Media Player Version also.

It sounds like “four guys playing in a room” (plus the hidden keyboard under the stage). Sounds less like its from Pop and more like it should be snuggled between Electric Storm and Kite.

No doubt, Bono recut the lyrics. It is the most obvious at the middle keyboard/beat pause section. Also his “Ayah, Ayah” right before the end. I’m Lovin’ Adam’s more consistent feed on this mix. Man I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!

assuming these vocals are new and weren’t lying around from the POP sessions, i must say it’s so great to have Bono’s voice back. No more excuses of strange gas floating around the Dublin air, or of hangovers . . . sounds like Bono quit smoking. His voice is absolutely clear on everything they’ve put out since ATYCLB.

I’m not usually one for revisionist history, but this new version is spectacular. Bass line much improved, as well as Bono’s vocals. I love it!

I agree Fan since ’80, as it is now, “Gone” would be a great single.

I get the impression that this vocal track isn’t recent. Bono doesn’t sound like this these days. It’s probably from the Pop sessions.

Well… holy shit! I knew this new of Gone would rock, but I had no clue that it would be this good. I don’t think that these vocals are from the POP sessions as they sound alot more like the live version’s vocals. This would be a great single. I mean… what better way to prove that POP wasn’t a total flop? Now there’s only the new mix of Numb to go! I think this new version of Gone is the best remixed song and the most rocking song they have. On another topic… anyone hear that Our Lady Peace covered With Or Without You in concert in Hartford 2-3 nights ago? I dunno how good it could’ve sounded…

I disagree John, these vocals sound like the Bono of now, just like the new vocals in “Discotheque.”

This version of Gone is quite something! It’s really good!…BUT…I do not like the idea of most people bumming out all the songs picked from POP for the Best Of…The original Gone, I think, was just as good, but different. What I don’t like about this version is it sounds too much like the U2 of ATYCLB, and less of that experimental U2 in POP, which I thought had more guts in trying new things than now. Personally, I think all the new remixes so far are pretty good, but the reworking is so obvious that they don’t sound like POP songs anymore. I think if the band had to have remixed songs off POP, these would certainly wouldn’t have been my picks. Maybe MOFO, Miami or Please (although I guess the single version of Please was the new mix). However, I have to say this is the best remix out of the three we’ve heard so far.

Memusa, the changes to the songs in these remixes date back to the live versions on the POPMART tour, so I don’t think it’s quote accurate to say they sound that much like ATYCLB.

Well, in reality they can’t release songs from older albums this long after, even if they are new mixes. “Gone” would be a great choice if they had remixed all of “Pop” though.

I went back and listened to all of “Pop” again replacing the appropriate songs with the new mixes and single versions, and whoa, it sounds pretty damn good! Now I liked “Pop” before, but you see how complete these songs now and what might have been.

I always thought that ‘Gone’ would be an amazing single for POP. U2’s choice of single release sometimes veers on the conservative side (in my little opinion).
I’ve just listened to ‘The Hands’ again tonight… liked it alot yesterday, then today stuck the headphones on, wine and cigeratte (choose your vice here), relaxed and happy and….damn, it’s happened again, a U2 song gets right under my skin without any warning at all.
Why can’t I be a Westlife fan instead? life would be so much easier!

Why not now as a single? After all, the Sweetest Thing single from ’98 was a remake as well, and this song mops the floor with it, or, come to think of it, much of the rest of AAA radio. If the hardest rocking U2 people have heard recently is, erm, Elevation, then why not release this to remind everyone how good they really are?

Why do people think Pop was a failure? Because the media says so? Just because the album didn’t live up to expectations in the U.S. doesn’t mean it was a failure. The new remixes from Pop aren’t too far removed from the originals, and not too many listeners are complaining.

I love the idea of Pop as a continuously changing thing- we can all make our favorite version of it with any of the mixes available. Ultimate Pop, as it were. I don’t think it was a failure artistically, but the band might have, or at least wanted some opportunity to polish it off.

Well, for a band like U2 after albums like Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby and Zooropa, POP was a commercial flop. People (including the band’s promos) were hyping it up to be the release of the year. When it wasn’t, the backlash ensued. I don’t believe that the POPMart tour was nearly as exciting as the Zoo TV tour, amnd the album wasn’t nearly as exciting or accesible as Achtung Baby. To be fair though, Zooropa wasn’t too accessible either. The band themselves were not overly enthused about the finished product. They said that the last vocal was recorded on the day of the mastering of the album and have said also, that if they had had another month they could’ve done the album greater justice. I think the fact that they decided to rework both of the first two singles speaks volumes about what they think about the album. And when the album was out and they were releasing the singles, every one after those two were tweaked in some or another, the most drastic being If God Will Send His Angels and Please. Let’s just face it, I love the album, but it was an unfinished album. So not having a finished album out there, not to have something you’re 100% behind… that alone makes it somewhat of a failure.

I’m always slightly amused at the way Pop gets so much crap from the media nowadays. Rolling Stone gave it four stars when it first came out, the same as Zooropa and ATYCLB. Media bandwagons are just silly.
Topic…I like the new mix. It’s sexy.

I’ve always loved Gone and thought it was wonderful that it was included on this last tour… and this is definitely the best remix of the Pop songs! Yay for great lyrics – no air heavy as a truck shizznit here.

Adam: I have to disagree with you in that these new remixes have a ATYCLB touch to them. And that is not bad, it’s just thathaving reworked the songs 5 years after their original release, the band are inadvertedly injecting their new, more stripped down style of ATYCLB. So my point is that the changes should have only polished the original songs instead of disarming and reconstructing the songs to make them sound new and fresh. POP wasn’t a fresh-sounding album. Despite of its name, it was dark and very deep in terms of the issues it addressed. Furthermore, the sound of these new remixes is more of the new U2 than the sound of POP. POP was less raw…an album you have to listen closely to listen to all the effects, loops, etc. ATYCLB is not like that, which is also great. The band can work both styles perfectly, but each style belongs to its album.

But I have to admit that Gone is the remix which sounds the least to ATYCLB. Can’t say that about the other two, though.

I think its obvious that Bono and the gang are somewhat ashamed of Pop. They’re constantly apologizing for the album and seem to have created an endless list of remixes. It’s as if they lack complete faith in the original tunes. I think they should wise up. Pop, although certainly not their best effort, was arguably their most bold and daring album to date. (You could argue that Achtung Baby was and I wouldn’t argue with you, but still. . . ) Truthfully, Pop was the album that made me a die-hard U2 fan. (Popmart was my very first concert) If any other band had come out with anything close to the calibur of Pop, it would be hailed as a breakthrough. Pop is a great album. In my mind, a classic. Stop apologizing for it and stop with the remixes!

Pop was in fact a masterpiece. Just because the masses(mainstream) didn’t get it doesn’t dillute it’s potency. I’ll take cutting edge over John Mayer bullshit any fucking day of the week. Pop wasn’t a failure to U2 fans. It was a failure to the dimwitted cross section of american mainstreamer’s…who weren’t U2 fans. The album went number 1….Jesus. If Gone was released in 1997…it would have smashed everything else out there on the radio up to bits. Some people can’t accept change…and still can’t…and those people are the only ones that complain about the little things that dont matter. A mix doesn’t make a song better…it only changes the way it sounds. I’ll take a 4-track recording of this over anything out today.

You guys know where Pop started having the shit kicked out of it??? It was the ABC “A Year in Pop” special, the one we all recorded and still love… That’s right… Why did it do so poorly in the ratings here in America??? Two words people… Puff Daddy!!! That’s what the casual music listener wanted, and that’s what they got!!! An entire year of Puffy… Gritty, brilliant rock and roll??? Not in this commercial mister!!! We want endless recycled hits from a guy who sounds like him and his mentally challenged buddy are about to fall asleep!!! The new mix rocks ass, btw…

hi. i like the new song, though it’s not much different to me than original version, which is fine. in my opinion Bono’s vocals are definately from 1997/1998, possibly during Popmart tour. to me it doesn’t sound like today’s Bono’s voice. it’s Popmart live style. when i’ve played it for the very first time it felt like listening to a popmart concert, i don’t believe Bono re-sang it recently (i hope i’m wrong though, because if he did, then it’s just great, party time – it sounds great). When will we hear Mysterious Ways? it’s my all-time favourite song and i can’t wait to hear that change. and 24bit sound? – is it really that much better? i guess we’ll know in 2 weeks. mp3 quality sucks. the real thing is always better than mp3s (anyway, it should be this way)

It didn’t sound much different to me either! All these the new remixes are just a waste of time IMO… either they are just the same, or turned into something I don’t like.
I can’t understand how some people can say that Bono sounds BETTER on this new remix than on the original?! I think it’s the opposite. At least in the chorus. Bono should not try to hit the high notes ’cause it just sounds weird and he cannot do it anymore! (Face it, Bono!) I think the whole idea of the remixes just sucks…

Andraz, MW has been on U2.com for the last 24 hours…
Zippy, fan since ’97 perhaps? Bono’s voice is actually the most polished it has ever been…He has never been able to hit high notes without the falsetto push. He’s just as passionate as ever with a voice under control. He understands his boundaries, perhaps thanks to his dad. How do I know?…I don’t…

I agree this mix is so much more powerful and more of a rock song than the original, i like it more than the original there is some beauty still left in the original though.. For once one of the mixes is good .. now just numb to go

I think it is new vocals. Bono didn’t start singing the chorus like that until the Elevation Tour. Both versions of Gone have their good qualities though. I can’t decide which one I like better.
