Bono gives him more credit than he deserves. However, I do agree with Bono on one thought, one color vs. the spectrum….it would have been interesting to see what Kurt Cobain could have evolved to.

er.. To my ears, Achtung Baby has Nirvana’s influence all over it – attitude wise and sonically. Bono knows what’s what. Pearls don’t know jack.

I think Achtung Baby came out before anybody knew about Nirvana. I doubt he influenced AB at all.

I like to listen to music of “my generation” I am only 21, and went through the whole Nirvana/Pearl Jam stage and loved it.. and often reach for their cds’s. They are fantastic!! The only decent “rock band” around today are Weezer. Foo Fighters (who live in the shadows) will never reach Nirvana’s standards . Limp Bizz.. will never reach Rage against the Machine status…Creed/stain and all those bands will never reach Pearl Jam’s standard.. The Srokes/Hives/vines- i suppose they are the best group of bands since the grunge era.. and even they themselves are allusionist. Then their is U2.. I suppose they were part of the post-punk movement – (echo and the bunnymen/Joy Devision)- but to me they rarely stick to the flow and always produce surprises. I gues not being part of a major movement has allowed them to continue solidly through the years. They are never yesterdays news. They can never be stapled to a certain genre.

Hey Ian where r u from? In the US, smells like teen spirit came out in early 2000, Nevermind came out midway through 2001 & achtung baby came out in November 2001. It could have been different in Europe.

Please ignore my last post… I think I was smoking crack at the time.

err…uhm…AB came out Nov.2001? Nov. 1991 sounds much better 🙂
Nevermind: 1991, so, change the 200x for 199x

Mysterious Ways floatin’ on U2.com now!

nevermind came out september 24, 1991. ‘teen spirit’ came out maybe a month before. nevermind hit no. 1 in january 1992. achtung baby came out november 18, 1991 and the fly came out in september 1991. both hit no. 1 shortly after being released. i’m thinking nirvana didn’t have much, if any influence on achtung since U2 had been recording it since 1990. though bono is spot on in his analysis of kurt and nirvana’s influence and importance.

It all comes back to the Pixies. Both Nirvana and U2 were definitely listening to the Pixies pre-Nevermind and Achtung Baby.

I still think the only reason Nirvana is as posthumously hyped as they are is because Kurt shot himself. I don’t remember them talked up this much when they were actually recording music.

I have to agree with Rob. Nevermind is a great album, but it’s one album folks. It’s kind of pathetic that the only way to make this much noise is to kill yourself.

Nirvana was a good band, but I like when he said that he doesn’t think about the legacy of Nirvana, but what could have been. That it was a bit “one color” and that he would have like to have seen the whole spectrum with them.

Weezer is not the only decent rock band around today. Weezer is in fact crap. Rivers is an arrogant bastard who doesn’t repect his fanbase. Read any interview. I seriously doubt U2 were even a bit influenced by Nirvana, but vice versa. I don’t hear any influence whatsoever on Achtung Baby. Kurt Cobain was an overrated guitarist and songwriter. His lyrics were utter shit…along with Weezer’s. Smells like shit. 🙂

I agree with Rob….
I agree with Rob….
Rob’s post is really pointless and cynic… In utero was an amazing album too, and all this negative stuff about Nirvana, about “Kurt shot himself” blablablabla show just one thing: you weren’t there when Nevermind was released, or maybe you were just three years old. That album had – out of the intentions of the band – an influence like few others in the history of music -IN THAT MOMENT, IN THE PRESENT IN WHICH IT WAS RELEASED – Bono used the right word – it was a bomb.
Bono’s words are the words of the great musician – star he is, not of a blabla guy who talk without listening to his heart. Too much cynism nowadays, and that’s sad.
