I like this version! Is that Adam singing ‘I Feel Numb’?
It looks like this is a totally reworked version, with new guitar and vocal parts.
This sounds great! the vocals are so much clearer/cleaner and overall more audible in the mix. This presence doesn’t change the song that much however. edges guitar also is much louder towards the end. It just can’t beat the remix of discotheque!
Nice mix, finally we get to hear Larry’s vocals (he is credited for backing vocals in the “Zooropa” booklet, along with Bono)! Did you know that Larry played the bass in the opening sequence of Zooropa? Can’t wait for his solo record 😉
It proves once again what a great song Numb is, on a one of their greatest albums. And kewl, Larry chanting
Larry is singing I Feel Numb, but yes, sounds like Adam is intoning I Feel Numb as well. (g) New vocals from the fat lady (Bono) as well, wonder if they were recorded way back when or more recently…
It sounds to me like this is probably stuff that was recorded back then and they just put it back into the song or made it more audible… Anyway, good mix.
the voice in the left channel is Larry (i think, could be Edge)…but i think the one in the right channel is Edge. A similar vocal was used on one of the Numb remixes – but i can’t remember if it was the Perfecto Remix (with the little bit of ‘In Cold Blood’ in it) or the one off of Melon.
Nah, I Feel Numb in the right channel is being said with an accent that is definitely an Adam one not Edge’s, Edge is already the lead in this. (g)
I absloutely love Bono’s vocal in this one. Probably at his best. That is also adam and larry on vocals. Has anyone ever heard the melon remix of Numb? There is a sample of Van Diemans land in there. I love the crowd noises in this mix. SB
I thought the sample of Van Diemen’s Land was in Wake Up Dead Man?
This mp3 is missing a few seconds in the begenning…
I agree with PopArtist: sounds like Larry on the left, Adam rushing through his on the right. Can’t you just imagine his full read: “Oh, bollocks, do I really have to do this? okay, ‘ifeelnumb’. Now get off my back.”
Yeah, it was taken from the Zooradio thing I posted the link to. The DJ was talking over the beginning.
So you can still hear Bono singing? Whew! One earlier review of the song stated that the new mix of vocals pretty much drown out Bono’s lovely falsetto. That’s my favorite part–I would have had to sing along so much louder to fill the void!
It doesn’t exactly drown them out… it does take away from them though. It seems to me that the band remixed all of the remixed songs very close to the live versions of the songs. I wonder if the inclusion of Numb means that they’ll try to perform it live again… probably not.
I’m feeling numb
Check out the new mix of U2’s ‘Numb’ – sweet backing vocals that you can actually hear in this version.
Much much much Better remix!!! I really like how they bring out Bono’s falsetto on this one.
Numb played live again??? That would be an even better surprise for fans than the comeback of The Fly!!! Keep your fingers crossed!!!
Awesome mix! Takes some getting used to though because I’ve listened to the Zooropa version many many times. Vocals are great and as for the guitar parts they sound like an outtake of some sort. Alternate mix from the Zooropa Sessions.
Perhaps parts were taken from the Acthung Baby outtakes? You all know that Numb has been around since the early 90’s right? 🙂
if you’re worried about fat lady bono’s falsettos being drowned out, don’t forget that you’ll get more than enough from the numb remix (gimme some dignity). i like how these revisionist remixes have been a little subtle (as far as remixes go) but have made most of the songs better by my count. how mike hedges was able to make Gone sound better than it already is, is beyond me…
Well, clearly the band recorded new parts for these mixes in some areas…
Am I the only one who hates this mix? it sucks. I’m very very very disappointed at the new mixes that we will hear. Gone is the only one shinning, but still got its flaws. Numb is horrible, dunno how they possibly think to put that in the album, ack.
Dsico Fly: I have something to say about how Mike Hedges made the track(gone) better than the original, and I would like you 2 respond 🙂 .. He didn’t. U2 found that song during the PopMart tour.. that song is almost u2’s best Live song, if not their best.. I think they are responsible for making that song such a powerful song thsi time around, it has so much passion in it, it still does on the pop album as well, but U2 were very unsure of themselves around the Pop era.. hence the slight lack of passion. But I am sure he deserves some crediti who ever he is..
Vox – I agree with you about Numb. While I like the song on the album, this version sounds too cluttered. The “I feel numb” part, no matter who said it, feels bored, not numb. So you’re not the only one!
Josh is the voice of reason. The horrible tracklisting for the best of has inspired me to burn my own 90-00 best of and bsides. Lemon added and Numb deleted is in full effect!
Even though I do like the new mix of numb, I would have liked to have lemon on there instead. At least put the edit version on the album! Oh and of course The Fly!
Horrible track listing, Ian? I don’t know what your tastes are, but most of the best and most popular songs from the era are on this disc… I wish people would stop the whining.
Too bad. I got an opinion that isn’t the same as yours.
You’re right, didn’t mean to be harsh. I just don’t see why there’s so much “controversy” about this.
Adam, what you mean by “I wish people would stop whining” is “I wish people would just kiss their Irish bottom’s no matter what!” Well, it is acceptable to not like some things U2. You really need to learn to handle the idea of criticism. Believe it or not, they are not gods. Anyway, this mix comes as no surprise. What with the adult contemporary sounds of ATYCLB, Predictable Storm, the horrible new Discotheque and Staring at the Sun and the mediocre Gone what was to expect? A blazing new sound? Ha. U2 hasn’t been there since 97. Not that it matters, U2 fans have proven that they’ll accept anything anyway… as long as it isn’t Pop.
Oh please. I never said you have to love everything they do. But there is a difference between constructive criticism and whining/insulting. It’d do you well to learn it.
And I liked “Pop,” by the way. But people like you make it more and more difficult for me to want to associate with others that do.
