Hot Press’s Peter Murphy reviews U2’s “Best Of” and points out the compilation’s “a little revisionist” with the omission of “The Fly”. He sums up the decade as follows: “If Achtung Baby was the drunken domestic row, Zooropa the AWOL all-nighter, Passengers the moment of clarity at dawn and Pop the hangover, then All That You Can

Yes, but unlike some here, his thoughts were still positive.

Speaking for myself, I really can’t be arsed what’s on a Best of. I rarely buy them. (I have to have that DVD, though. Sigh.) /snobmode on/ I reckon “Best of” albums are for people who have 25 CDs and 5 books on a little shelf. Including Eric Clapton and Mariah Carey’s “Unplugged” efforts and the latest Stephen King. /snobmode off/ I’m thrilled “The First Time” is on it, though, because it’s such a little sleeper, that track. I’m glad someone in U2 thinks it’s an important song too. Clever, moving, true. A small tune with a big heart.

I think “The First Time” is an important addition here too. I remember Bono talking about ending ZOOTV with “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You.” He compared it to the voice of “Boy” admist all the chaos. I find “The First Time” to be the same thing on “Zooropa.” And if this is a retrospective of their 90s music, it works just the same in this collection.

“The First Time” was the first song I taught myself by ear on the piano. It’s a lovely little number and a moment of intimacy on “Zooropa.” I’m glad it made the cut on the best of album too. Hmm, “Zooropa.” With its disparate sounds and themes, this Best of is a kind of Zooropa too.
