More from Billboard: Edge’s track-by-track commentary on THE BEST OF 1990-2000. It’s good readin’. On “Numb”: If Bono is the great communicator in the band, and the guy who can be upfront and put across a song and a melody and a lyric, my approach is much more quiet, internal… There’s humor there, there’s a lot in the lyric, but it’s not put over like a lead singer would put over a tune. It’s really deadpan; it’s really understated. So, if ever there was a song that was kind of designed for me to take the vocal, it was this tune. In a way, it was kind of the anti-communication, anti-frontman, anti-lead singer song. I can’t imagine ever doing anything like it again.

Hrm… I can’t help but wonder what a rremix of Stay would’ve sounded like. I think the version on Zooropa is a mighty fine tune, and would have to be my fav on that album.

Egan: Great poetry but could you please write black on white so I won’t lose my sight 🙂
Edge’s commentary: Paul McGuinness says it will take the next DECADE for the last album to match the success of Joshua Tree! Which means you can’t do it again, but you can do something similar it’ll just take LONGER.

If you want to here what the remix of “Stay” might sound like . . . just listen to the heavier, more electric version of the song on the “Faraway! So Close!” soundtrack. Longer, more guitars, bigger drums . . . That’s probably what he was talking about.

You know anywhere that I can find that bad boy? :^)

I sometimes see it on WinMX . . . I’m not sure if you can find the soundtrack anymore. It’s worth finding, though. Not only does it have the longer, heavier version of “Stay” on it, it also has “The Wanderer” complete with an extra verse.
You can still buy this soundtrack on Amazon.
Wim Wenders has had lots of U2 stuff on his soundtracks. “Until the End of the World” features an alternate mix of that song; “Faraway, So Close!” has “Stay” and “The Wanderer” in alternate forms; “The End of Violence” features “I’m Not Your Baby,” not the instrumental b-side version, but as a rockin’ duet between Bono and Sinead O’Connor; and of course, “The Million Dollar Hotel” with “Stateless,” “Ground Beneath Her Feet,” “The First Time,” and other stuff.

I don’t really like the soundtrack version of Stay. The drum part is well, messed up. UTEOTW is ok, pretty much an unrefined version of the song. The Wanderer is worth it though because of the extra verse.
And Karaoke, the Joshua Tree has sold 18 million copies over the last 15 years. So obviously it would take ATYCLB just as long to match, if not beat that success. In two years it has already sold some 11 million copies, which is why they think it will eventually outsell The Joshua Tree. But obviously it needs time to do so.

Oh…thanks for the clarification.

I prefer the soundtrack version of “Stay” — except for those do, do, do’s in the middle.
And the versin of “I’m Not Your Baby” with lyrics — awesome! Why wasn’t it on the “B-sides” disc? Why? Why? Why?

I agree Sean. I’m surprised “I’m Not Your Baby” isn’t on there too. A couple of years ago there was a “Lost Songs” article in Q magazine that had bands talking about b-sides that should’ve made it, or outtakes that were left on the cuttingroom floor. The Edge was one of the people interviewed, and he commented upon how much he liked “I’m Not Your Baby.” I guess the rest of the band didn’t think so.

What version of “I’m Not Your Baby” with lyrics? I thought that was an instrumental on the “Please” single.

Sinead O’Connor guests on the with-lyrics version of U2’s “I’m Not Your Baby” on the soundtrack of Wim Wenders’ “The End of Violence.” Not a great film, but a pretty good soundtrack.

Salman Rushdie discusses U2’s involvement with Wim Wenders in his new collection of essays. There’s a whole essay devoted to U2. You should check it out for an intereting point of view of the band by one of the literary world’s greats.

Maybe one day, a complete 3 or 4 disc b-sides collection will come out. That would be cool. Everything from the U2:3 e.p. to “11 O’Clock tick Tock” to “A Celebration” and then through the 80s and 90s, scooping up everything. I would buy that in a flash.

I actually like the do do dos in the soundtrack version of stay, but I don’t know if that would work in the album mix

the do do dos worked pretty well on the underdog mix of stay (which is possibly better than the original version)…

Yes! The underdog mix of Stay is fantastic – it’s on Melon, right? I also agree that the do-doos are a great part of the song. So that’s 3-to-2, the do-doos win! Awww-yeah…

Or that “North & South of the River” is better than 85% on disc 1.

Hrm… a conversation about doos and dahs… This sounds funny. Was it ever confirmed that the band remixed all of POP? I had missed that rumour the first time around. And remember awhile back when this site said someone was saying that the band was remixing “Discotheque”, “Numb”, and “Lemon”? Makes me wonder if “Lemon” was one of the last songs in the running for the Best Of along with “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses”

Had to put in my 2 cents on “I’m Not Your Baby.” So bitterly disappointed the lyric version didn’t show up. It’s such a cool song. Such a cool song. With some really cool lines. And I always kinda dug the do-doos in at least the soundtrack version of “Stay”.

I’m Not Your Baby is a cool song. I think it’s probably not on there, because it’s not a b-side… Not the version with vocals anyway.
And Dudelove, no not all of “Pop” has been remixed? Just the ones for the “Best of.”

Okay, I had thought that there was a rumour that the band was gonna remix the whole album… And about your theory on “I’m Not Your Baby”, “Your Blue Room” made it onto that disc, and I thought it had only appeared on Passengers.

I’d have to check the liner notes to the END OF VIOLENCE sdtk., but I suspect U2 don’t solely control the publishing/master on the vocal version of “I’m Not Your Baby” — Sinead probably owns some of the rights, which makes including it on a compilation tricky.

“Your Blue Room” also showed up as a B-side on one of the “Staring at the Sun” singles. Just FYI, DudeLove

Don’t worry, Dudelove, most people don’t seem to know that! Anyway, I think INYB is great music, but Sinead keeps the song from being great to me…

Awesome article!!! Edge forgot to mention that Hold Me Thrill Me… was around since Zooropa. It’s mentioned in the book called Stay (Faraway, So Close!). There’s also a reference to an unreleased instrumental track called “Nosejob” in that book. Anyone else have it?

The thing that I found funny is that RS said that HMTMKMKM is from the “Batman Returns” soundtrack when it’s actually on the “Batman Forever” soundtrack. ah well!

And considering that the title of “Hold Me, Thrill” me can be seen on the cover of ZOOROPA (along with “If You Wear That Velvet Dress” and “Wake Up Dead Man”) we know that it was kicking around sometime during that period.

Songs I really wish were on the b-sides disc, so that everyone could have a chance to enjoy them: I’m Not Your Baby (vocal version), Salome (regular version), Where Did It All Go Wrong, NIGHT & DAY (Youth mix or original mix), Holy Joe (garage mix), Slug, Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses (Temple Bar full version), . . . . BUT NOT Alex Decends into Hell, or the other Holy Joe, or Always (blah!), or that awful CCR cover (Fortunate Son) or the faux Rolling Stones (Paint it, Black). Ick!

Glen, how do you get to see the names on the cover of Zooropa? Is it some visual wizardry? I can’t see them for the life of me!

Jim, they’re there in the purple stuff on the front cover. Slightly hidden, but they’re there — this isn’t new information I’m giving out. Have a second look at the purple stuff overlapping the picture images.

By the way the melody of the tu-tu-tu-tus from the alternate version of Stay can be found in the album version of Lemon.
It’s the piano melody played during the chorus (while bono sings: Midnight is where the day begins)……….
I also would have liked a different tracklisting for the b-sides disc. (also would have preferred the live tv version of North and South of the River to the b-side one)…………
Apart from that, good to hear Edge talk well about Miss Sarajevo. Heard in the context of the greats it more than holds its own………

Oh, come on Jeff, “Always” is a great tune. That chorus gets me every time. It would have been a fine replacement for “Summer Rain” or “Happiness is a Warm Gun.”

It’s funny how no matter what people want on the b-sides cd, everyone agrees that it pretty much sucks.

Yeah, I guess so. Does anyone else agree that the new monotone backing vocal on the new mix of “Numb” is absolutely horrendous?

I love both the old and the new verisons of “Numb.” I don’t think that monotone part is really new. I believe it’s also on the Soul Assassins mix of the song.

Insightful article. Edge’s comment “I think we used all the original vocals” when remixing Discotheque suggests that the “boom-chas” were left out not intentionally, but accidentally. And the song suffers as a result. After listening to this compilation nine or ten times, I’m starting to wonder if a lot of the little changes, like the new line in “Mysterious Ways,” were made by mistake. Does anyone else feel that this whole package seems like it was rushed to the shelves ?
