Saloné

Salon reviews the “Best of”: “For all their slick-sell posturing, U2 was pretty serious all along.”

Duh.

  1. I too noted the odd cohesiveness of “the best of.” I however thought it was a good thing. From reading all these reviews, I’ve come to one conclusion: no matter what theory you have about U2 in the 1990s, ‘Numb’ effs it up. And that’s the way they like it.

  3. This is the same writer that said Jerry Garcia was the “Most insincere person” she had ever met!
Also she noted that David Bowie “has very little writing ability”.
And to top it off she just doesn’t get it when it comes to our Irish lads!!

  7. A lot of good and interesting points in the review.

Another thing worth noting – If 80’s U2 was Black and White and 90’s U2 was Colour (Album sleeves) why is the sleeve of new Best Of Black and White?

  9. I think she hits where it hurts.
Some of the things she writes sound very true to me but there is at least one difference between her and me: I never doubt U2’s sincereness.

But that’s what makes me a fan I guess. Besides that, I never try to be a wannabee shrink and she is doing very well if you emphase “wannabee”.

The problem with U2 is that they can never do things right. Innovation wasn’t appreciated and if they hadn’t innovated it wou;d have been called “boring…” at some point.

The problem with the Best Of compilation is that you simply have to choose. You can’t put all the songs on it. And maybe there’s some thruth in this review: They reworked the pop songs (I like them, but they don’t reflect the pop album anymore) and choose to put in “first time” instead of “Lemon” (Why?). And what is Miss Sarajevo doing there? It’s not even a U2 song.
I’m sure every fan has his/her own opinion, but real fans don’t question the honnestness / seriousness of U2 because they know better 🙂

In response to Liam: You didn’t see the covers of “One” and ATYCLB. And there are more b/w sleeve designs. And off course, it had to match colors with Best of 80-90.
