Irish radio presenter Marian Finucane spoke to the wife of actor Dermot Morgan (“Father Ted”) and played some clips including one of him impersonation Gay Byrne interviewing Bono. (real audio) It starts at 41:52. We think he sounds more like John Lennon, though has has Byrne down pat. (via Emmett Murphy) We’ve never heard anyone who can do a convincing Bono, ‘xcept Bono. Have you?

U.S. film star/funny guy Ben Stiller actually CAN pull off a really convincing Bono. Supposedly Comedy Central is airing all the Ben Stiller Show episodes from 1992, Saturday to Wednesday starting Dec. 21st. One of those episodes has him doing a great Zoo-era Bono complete with pseudo-pretentious-Fly/Bono soundbites on a parody of a U2 “Rockumentary”.
Other good stuff includes U2 playing a bar-mitzvah, and an amazingly accurate parody of all three One videos which has U2 hawking breakfast cereal.
Funny stuff for all U2 fans. Set your VCRs if you get a chance.

The Bono impersonator in Pulp’s “Bad Cover Version” video isn’t too terribly good, but he absolutely *nails* him for one phrase — listen for when he sings “…is not the real thing.” He hits the voice-crack on “thing” perfectly.

Ben Stiller is probably the best, but comedian and sometimes film star Bobcat Goldthwait, believe it or not, does a great Bono too. I saw him do a standup routine where he sang the Village People’s YMCA, as interpreted by Bono. It was actually brilliant. Comedy Central might show it sometime (it was one of the Comic Relief shows) but I couldn’t tell you when.

It’s just that nobody gets the accent right. All the comedians I’ve heard attempt it sound like a stereotype Irishman. Bono’s accent is anything but that.

For anyone waiting for the Ben Stiller show reruns–the first and last episodes have the most U2 stuff. The show has had runs on Comedy Central and F/X and is completely worth taping. Andy Dick, Janeane Garofalo, and Bob Odenkirk (Mr.Show) were also featured players. The talk show version of ZOO TV (“Weezy…yeah!”) and the commercial for Lucky Clovers are killer. Perhaps Stiller isn’t doing an accurate Irish accent, but it’s a very accurate Bono circa ZOO TV. For my money, he’s the best; that’s because he is a real fan so he gets the crucial details right.

Chris Kattan on SNL was pretty bad. Adam Sandler was also inadequate – funny since he does a GREAT Springsteen and Axl Rose.

My younger brother is a riot. He’s a very talented guitar player, and he’ll play “Bad” beautifully, and you get really into it, and then all of the sudden he stops in the middle and does his imitation of Bono’s “PleasedtaMEETCHA!” thing…Absolutely hysterical.
